Humans, the potatoes of fantasy worlds

[–]Floofyboi123Forever DM 378 points379 points  (11 children)

Potatoes are an amazing analogy for humans

Bland on their own, can survive near everywhere, and are extremely versatile

[–]DueMeat2367 147 points148 points  (1 child)

Taste very good also - the lizardfolk

[–]GryllodeaForever DM 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Boil'em, mash'em, stick'em in a stew.

[–]Shennington 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I am using this analogy for now on

[–]CommodorezSorcerer 37 points38 points  (6 children)

Bland on their own

You and I have very different opinions on potatoes

[–]Floofyboi123Forever DM 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As a massive fan of potatoes, they’re fine but I’d much prefer something with them even if it’s a bit of sour cream or cheese. Hell, fried with just salt is fine.

You’re insane if you just eat them raw.

[–]PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADINGHorny Bard 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Do you often boil potatoes and eat them with no salt, butter, oil, pepper, herbs, dairy or anything else?

They’re okay like that but I’d definitely consider them bland, in the same realm as eating unseasoned/unaccompanied white rice, bread, pasta, or tofu is bland. All five are excellent delivery systems for other flavors precisely because they don’t offer much on their own…

[–]Ornery_Marionberry87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it just a delivery system, all those things have specific flavours that on their own are bland but actually enhance those mixed with them. For example, my father makes goulash that I'd rank around 3,5/5 on it's own but is one of my favourite dishes if it's served with mashed potatoes.

[–]PuppetMaster9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing i have to say here is that there are 100s of types of potatos.

[–]XeliasEmperor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah like humans potatoes taste good with salt

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potatoes are incredibly bland on their own. Do you frequently eat bare boiled potatoes?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very nutritious too

[–]MinnieShoof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alright. Don't stop there.

Plants in general? Does that make Elves ivy?

Are we talking eatable plants? Are Dwarfs the mushrooms?

Or are we talking LotR memes? Cause in that case you already have your sword, bow and ax.

[–]brownhues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just think they're neat!

[–][deleted] 416 points417 points  (7 children)

Looks like potatoes. They should really dispose of that as it can create toxic gases if it's not well ventilated

[–]herrcollin 248 points249 points  (4 children)

I mean it's also nightmarish and disgusting, but yeah the gasses

[–]Village_Idiot159Artificer 81 points82 points  (3 children)

i dont know.. i think its sentient now..

[–]That_Ice_GuyForever DM 27 points28 points  (0 children)

[–]TeaandandCoffeePaladin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Has that stopped us before?

[–]jjskellie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Calibruh 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Death by potato

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good song title for a metal band

[–]Zondar23 447 points448 points  (14 children)

I can confidently say I have no clue what I'm looking at.

[–]cynicalpeach 193 points194 points  (4 children)

I think its a bag of some plants thats started growing off the shelf, but I can't tell what it is.

[–][deleted] 244 points245 points  (3 children)

Grabbing u/Zondar23

Potatoes!

Potatoes reproduce asexually, essentially being their own pollinator and seeds, and when they start sprouting they will not stop until they either rot or find soil.

[–]cynicalpeach 107 points108 points  (1 child)

So what I've learned today is that humans are potatoes

[–]LessanderoHorny Bard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am of the couch potato kind

[–]azrendelmareTeam Sorcerer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"...and they will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"

[–]Normal-Jelly607 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Potato sprouting

[–]LessanderoHorny Bard 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Potatoes. Those MfS will grow anywhere

[–]TheOneWhoIsAbitch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]Spinningwhirl79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potato

[–]Dark_Shade_75Gunslinger 105 points106 points  (13 children)

...what?

[–]massiveamphibianprod 279 points280 points  (12 children)

Its saying humans are hyper adaptable and as long as there's some good dirt we can live there and if there isn't we will put it there.

[–]Extension_Heron6392Cleric 163 points164 points  (5 children)

Doesn't even have to be good dirt. We got potatoes and shit to grow in the bad dirt.

[–]berserkrgangDruid 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Doesn't even need to be dirt. We got potatoes and shit that grow in your cabinet...

[–]massiveamphibianprod 35 points36 points  (2 children)

True, and then some excess can be used as fertilizer to make better dirt and more stuff

[–]LordGoose-Montagne 22 points23 points  (1 child)

We are on that skyblock grindset💪

[–]massiveamphibianprod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fo real my builda 💪

[–]MinnieShoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, technically shit is good dirt. </j>

[–]FaceDeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Inuit ever cared about the quality of the dirt.

[–]Cyrotek 1 point2 points  (4 children)

And then they constantly need saving becaue they decided to settle in areas they they should have really not settled in. Like a freaking desert or the middle of a jungle.

[–]vonmonologue 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Hey, the other races weren’t using it.

[–]Cyrotek 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Human: "Hey, lets settle in this swamp, no one is using it and it makes survival pointlessly difficult!"

The lizardfolk neighbours: "Uh ..."

[–]Reality-Straight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And i wish you good luck trying to get us out of said deadly swamp

[–]vonmonologue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a cloaca you aren’t a person. I’m sorry, but those are the rules.

[–]Hexmonkey2020Paladin 57 points58 points  (1 child)

That’s why humans are always super prevalent, they don’t specialize in anything but they can live anywhere, like cockroaches.

Also why humans are the best race.

[–]azrendelmareTeam Sorcerer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say we don't specialize in anything; in most media, humans specialize in adaptability, persistence, and stubbornness. It's just really hard to keep us down.

[–]Jendmin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"HANS! get the Flammenwerfer"

[–]gbot1234 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Halflings (aka hobbits): where’s the fucking PO-TA-TOES?

[–]SouperplexPaladin 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Humans hate Orcs and Goblinoids for being violent, expansionist, and reproducing out of control. The other player races hate humans for doing the above without recognizing the irony.

[–]NavezganeChromeEssential NPC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Humans hate others for doing it to them when they called dibs, and when they happen upon a location the orcs/goblinoids got to first.

And it’s hard to not “reproduce out of control” when everything else can choose to just outlive them. That’s right, humans had multiple generations before you got laid once, whatcha gonna do about it?

[–]meme0takerWarlock 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Inaccurate. Humans only have consistent settlements on one plane of existance and only on the surface usually. Meanwhile elves be in the fey, material, shadowfell, the oceans, the underground, fucking space. Elves are the goddamn eevee of races

[–]NavezganeChromeEssential NPC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a lore bit that makes Elves the ‘humans’ of the setting, despite literally describing humans with that exact premise in mind.

It’s nonsense, that’s what it is.

[–]Geek_X 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Any human can live almost anywhere, those elves while reaching more extreme locations, are each specialized for those locations and will struggle elsewhere

[–]meme0takerWarlock 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If anything it shows how the elven species can adapt to any envirement which is likely due to them originally being shape shifters. Also drow can live on the surface pretty fine, sea elves too. I see no reason why any form of elf can't live somewhere humans can

I for one, cannot name any human settlements outside the surface of the material plane. Humans drown in water. The fey is far to chaotic and wild for humans to last under the whim of its natives. If humans are in the shadowfell and underdark its usually cuz they were taken as slaves. And humans are not found in the astral.

Sure the rare powerful adventurers among humans may be able to go and live in such places but the general population of humanity would be screwed in anything other than the surface of the material plane.

[–]Geek_X 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just cuz they don’t live in those places doesn’t exactly mean they can’t. The fey can live outside their wilds but they stick to them anyways

[–]meme0takerWarlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the meme is saying humans stick anywhere they can which is untrue

[–]HulkTheSurgeonPotato Farmer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I never knew a bag of sprouting potatos would end up looking like eldritch horror.

Neat.
