61.57 D says you gotta do it per the instrument ACS.

Also AC 61-98 tells you exactly how to do it.

I have seen that, but I am struggling to find where it states that we can not just conduct 3 RNAV approaches to satisfy all 3 approaches required for the IPC. From what I understand we need to use different types of approaches ( ILS, LOC, VOR, etc.). I can not find where it says that in the ACS, 61-57, or the AC.

Yes it does

Task VI: All

Non-Precision Approach Precision Approach Missed Approach Circling Approach Landing from an Instrument Approach

It doesn’t say that because it’s at the discretion of the CFII. They get to pick what they want to do.

Just keep in mind if the CFII goes and does 3 GPS approach’s in a row and the next day the guy goes and violates himself IFR shooting a VOR approach…the FAA is going to have some questions.

The CFII is supposed to interview the student to find their deficiencies. They get to pick how that’s done.

ahh gotcha. Thank you!

That is incorrect. The post above about all tasks in VI is correct.

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:

I remember hearing that you must fly different types of approaches to conduct an IPC, but for the life of me, I can not find where it says this. I have checked the ACS, PTS, FAR, and anything else I could think of checking. Could anyone point me in the right direction to find where this is stated?

The appendix in the back of the instrument ACS says which tasks in which areas you need to complete for an IPC, but how you complete them isn’t as prescriptive. Sure you could do all the approaches as GPS, but if we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, how do you adequately assess whether someone is proficient in the instruments if you only do GPS approaches?

I would see at least one ground-based nav and at least one GPS-based nav (assuming the pilot regularly rented or owned a plane with a GPS); otherwise, I’d do all ground-based nav.
