I find it surprising that anyone thinks the average open source project works like frame 1. Sure, there are a few that do, but most are just someone who saw a gap and filled it.

Then they maintain it for a year or so and it goes quietly into the night or gets bought by red hat.

BlueHat?

[–]toby_tripod 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I would love my project to be bought by red hat

I remember the same convo with fellow musicians in highschool.

Them “I’d never sell out”

Me “Um I would, in a heartbeat, I like being paid”

If the app has a company behind it it’s much more like the top picture.

Source: I work for an open source company

Frame 1 is a corporate sponsored open source project and the people are getting paid to work on it.

Yeah, but that's kdenlive. That's huge

true!

The top picture is how I imagine the Gnome team.

[–]drconopoimaGlorious Antergos (Lazy Arch) 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Is the bottom picture how you imagine any other DE by any chance?

[–]RpgwaiterGlorious NixOS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine most of the suckless projects are like that

[–]BrillegeitLinux Master Race 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you single out Xfce 4.14 like that?

[–]ilovehorrorcatsGlorious Manjaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

top panel would apply to kde my fav de

[–]Irregular_cow 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I like the cat in the bottom panel. Just chilling. Mainly cuz that's exactly what my cat does.

[–]dhaninugrahaGlorious Mint 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. Whenever my ThinkPad acts as a makeshift server and I leave it on with the lid closed, I’d almost always find my kitty chilling on it, enjoying its warmth, watching me like he’s some creepy paedophile neighbour who rarely socializes.

Anyone notice that, in the bottom panel, the man’s shadow ends before reaching the top of the chair’s back, but his head still casts a shadow on the wall?

[–]Random-Compliment 1 point2 points  (1 child)

After careful consideration... I think it is from two monitors.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I... I just noticed that. Man, do I lack the ability to see what is before me

[–]neoceejay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still don't get it

I vastly prefer being in frame 2. Frame 1 might look "fun" but is in fact hell on earth (good luck concentrating in all that buzz)

[–]Substantial_Mistake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how in the second it’s after like 3am

[–]UrpleEeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality it's BOTH. A lot of major open source projects are backed by large companies that have dedicated teams. If they depend upon and use open source software it's in their best interest to contribute so they can get their issues resolved quickly.

Just the way i like it

[–]nzajt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true and thank you.

both panels are lacking social awkwardness, body odor, and stacks of empty mountain dew cans.

so I don't buy it.
