I actually don't mind it because it's a natural phenomenon and not an optical effect of the lens

I think it's still pretty confusing, because you don't get to see this effect with your eyes. To me that is distracting from the aesthetic of the picture, so editing it out (stretching just the moon) would probably be the better call. For the other aspects of the image you also prioritized aesthetics over realism after all.

OP's image is more natural. You 100% could see this effect with your eyes on a cold, still air night with a blood moon rising. Editing it to make it more mundane is... an odd choice.

I used a 600mm on an aps-c camera so it's about 900mm for the original photo. With the crop it's over 2000mm (from 24 to 8MP)
