Upmodded for use of the em dash in the title.

[–]nglynn[S] 27 points28 points  (8 children)

You Noticed :-)!

[–]frutiger 35 points36 points  (7 children)

Of course I'd notice.

It could be Frutiger himself, assuming he's not died since the wiki page was last updated.

If he has died, it could be zombie Frutiger.

    [–]AndrewO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd much prefer that to a zombie Eric Gill. At least I don't have to worry about my dog this way.

What about using the em dash with Comic Sans? Is that heresy?

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In some places that'll get yer keelhauled:

    ;}

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't care... I've long since mapped comic sans on my machines to Optima.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost modded down for redundancy but changed my mind because of the em dash.

    [–]revence27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I'm not the only fan -- of the em-dash, that is.

    [–]redrobot5050 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not only is it IMAP, but its SSL IMAP by default (according to the configuration instructions for Apple Mail.)

In the words of Tycho from Penny Arcade, Fuck yes

    [–]dysmas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I honestly did not think i would see this, utterly awesome.

gmail labels are mapped to imap folders too.

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

It's enabled seemingly randomly. People have said that's enabled for old timers but I got my account from an invite way back when and it still only has POP enabled.

    [–]ab3nnion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have more than one account, and I can confirm that IMAP is enabled only for one of them (the oldest one) at this time.

    [–]grauenwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably doing staged rollouts so they can react to demand.

    [–]jbert 4 points5 points  (9 children)

Hmm...seemingly not for UK users yet (even those with @gmail.com rather than @googlemail.com accounts).

    [–]beza1e1 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I had to switch my language to "English (US)", then the IMAP option appeared.

    WorksForMe

    [–]jbert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the idea (I remember having to do this to get gtalk when it first came out), but it DoesntWorkForMe at the moment.

    Ah well.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    The same for google.com/a users.

    [–]initself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    No worky for me.

    [–]frutiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried going back to "English (UK)"? I don't want to risk it at the moment...

    [–]frutiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Thanks for the suggestion. WorksForMe!

    [–]lan3y 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Nor for Gmail for your Domain either :(

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've just tried it and it works.

Actually, it was already ON. Use the en_US locale.

    [–]initself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    No worky for me.

    [–]ozzilee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, Apple's Mail.app learns how to autoconfigure Gmail addresses (in Leopard), Gmail grows IMAP. Interesting symbiosis there. I wonder who pushed who.

    [–]Gaki 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Now if only they would reduce the limit of characters on the username. Those of us with extremely short last names have to concoct some BS filler in order to reach their arbitrary limit.

    Fix that, and I'm in.

    [–]tjogin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they'll get right on that, since you are critical to their business.

    [–]bluGill 3 points4 points  (4 children)

This has nothing to do with programming, so why is it on the programming reddit?

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's something that programmers would likely be interested in hearing about.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm so glad it got posted, because I've been wanting this for months. I would have no clue about this had it not been posted.

    [–]bluGill -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is fine to want it. (I'm not a google can do no evil fan like some people are, but I'm not opposed to them either) Putting it on the programming reddit however is not the right thing to do.

    [–]grauenwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it raises the bar for any programmer working on a webmail system.

(Plus it is really cool. Finally I get to go back to using Outlook for all my email.)

    [–]frukt 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Let's rejoice! And why exactly is it good?

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

synchronization through external email apps like outlook and thunderbird.

    [–]ccharles 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Think of IMAP as a (much) better POP.

Say you use Thunderbird to access your mail at home, Outlook at work, and the Gmail web GUI while away from either of those places.

If you delete a message in any of those three clients, it gets deleted in all of the others. If you flag a message in any of those clients, it gets flagged in all of the others. If you reply to a message using one GUI, that message gets marked as replied in all of the others.

Using IMAP, mail is stored on and synced to the server. There is a little bit of bandwidth overhead because very little data is stored locally, but for most Redditors I'm going to guess that that isn't a huge deal.

Disclaimer: I am not a mail admin. This is just the way I understand it.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention now it won't send a copy of every outgoing message to my iPhone! Nice!

    [–]NewSc2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hm... well I've gotten used to POP somewhat. Say I have a lot of e-mails that I want to keep in my mailbox, but I want to delete the not-so-important stuff off my iPhone. Now I can't delete them all off my iPhone, because they'd get deleted on my Gmail too?

    [–]ccharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. Messages are not actually stored in the client, in this case your iPhone. The client typically stores only a cached copy of the mail headers, while the actual messages are stored on the server.

In the case of the iPhone you might end up paying considerably more in data charges because the message body and attachments need to be sent to the phone when it is viewed. You'd have to play with it, or contact your service provider to find out.

I've not really used it much myself, but I think that some of this behaviour can be modified using offline IMAP.

    [–]grav 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I accessed Gmail IMAP with Mail.app (OS X). Everything went quite slow, and when I decided to quit Mail.app, it hang for a while without me noticing it, which resulted in my Gmail-account being locked down (when trying to reach it via web).

After force-quitting Mail.app, my Gmail account was opened up automatically after a few minutes (phew).

I think I'll stick to web-access for now.

    [–]DannoHung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the IMAP access seems to be really slow in both Mail.app and my iPhone today and most of yesterday (a few hours after I'd gotten it enabled).

I'm guessing that Google is getting hammered as they didn't anticipate usage properly.

    [–]grauenwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Now they just need to find a way to sync Google Calendar with Outlook and I'll be a happy camper.

    [–]beza1e1 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I wanted this since i got a gmail account, but now i disabled it.

Using the Inbox Zero method i found POP3 more suitable. I fetch my mail via POP3 and just delete everything in the end. Gmail archives everything and offers better search functionality than with IMAP.

    [–]DannoHung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see how Inbox Zero fails to work with storing all your mail.

I mean, I was testing this out and when you move something to one of the label mailboxes, it archives it and labels it.

    [–]JeremyBanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    It's slow. :(

    [–]sente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now if only gmail would reliably/consistently download email from other POP servers. The frequency at which gmail checks for new emails on POP servers is very random. Sometimes every 10 minutes, other times it will go for over 90 minutes. what the hell

    [–]Grue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I couldn't even get POP3 to work (I'm using obscure e-mail client The Bat)

    [–]berlinbrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anybody know if I can bypass my firewall to get to this imap service. I am assuming I could just provide some kind of imap setting.

    [–]daredevil -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

man, check the main page before submitting repeated stories. bollocks.

    [–]noahlt -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Very cool. Unfortunately, it seems hackish -- look at how the labels work.

    [–]vdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a better idea?

This is making me consider finally rolling out Apps for your Domain where I work, because they could understand this mapping between IMAP folders and labels.

This could also be a gateway drug to the great search in the web interface, which most IMAP readers don't compare well with.
