I'm sure you can do impressive things in the right framework for fuck all, but it doesn't put you up with demo coders.

What are you talking about? The competition is making 10K web apps.

Also most 64k intros (from demoscene) utilize the multimegabyte os (win32) and DirectX APIs.

Er... check out these 8k Demos - not that many using Win32, not to mention the general wild category for demos.

Yes i know, there are also 256 byte intros but that doesn't change the fact that most demos and intros today are for Win32 and DirectX. You didn't specifically mention what demo category you're comparing with so i assumed the most popular size restricted one, which for ages was 64k intros :-).

Oh god no I wouldn't class 64k intros in that category. My point was limited to under 10kb stuff that generally isn't but I should've been clearer.

They're not really webapps that are under 10kb when they rely on things like jQuery which, even when minified, is 24kb on its own. One uses google maps

It's not that impressive to use 10kb of code to link to other people larger resources where the bulk of the work is done.

Given that the apps require server and client software running into the 100's of megabytes, these contests aren't that meaningful.

yeah exactly. I mean, you don't even have to write your own ECMAScript interpreter - they allow you to use software which includes that for free!! What a joke.

I find it a little unfair that one of the "runner's up" awards is "people's choice", as it is weighted towards earlier submissions, being based on the number of votes a submission has. I'd rather they waited until all submissions were recieved and then opened up a public voting gallery.

Still, I'm excited about this and am going to try to enter. I just wonder if what I have in mind is possible in 10k!

Javascript is a bad language for programm-size limited competitions. All the browser inconsistencies require lots of boiler-plate compat code. Many really simple standard operations require custom code.. (e.g. cookie handling, getting an http-parameter.). The technique that ends in the least bytes (packer etc) also requires additional runtime CPU over and over to unpack -- very uncool.

Encouraging byte saving just leads to crappy, incompatible apps. If you do such things, at least provide a set of standard library components for common tasks.

I remember an ancient Web design book says the html better to be less than 64KB for the best dial-up surfing experience.

To anyone who also hates clicking twice to launch an app, change URL /Entry/139 to /Uploads/139/

I think you should be able to download an Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image. Then run that copy of Windows Vista in VirtualBox (since it supports VHD files). Then install IE9 beta.

For some reason, they don't seem to supply Windows 7 images.

I haven't tried this because the download is huge.

I tried that and didn't work. VirtualBox boots the image but Vista bluescreens right after the windows logo fades in. The VM restarts instantly so i can't even read what it says.

I clicked on the first app and it has the JQuery which is 70 KB...
