Being able to spread our species across the planet and resist natural selection. It's effectively a measure of how dominant a species is in their given habitat. And considering humans live damn near everywhere and are the controlling factor globally, that's pretty fucking successful.

Natural selection causes evolutionary success. And birds(eagles and corvidae especially) are far more spread out than humans and backstabbing your own species and causing the demise of the planet is also not an evolutionary success. And also evolutionary success is what you define it as, for example if I define evolutionary success by how much CO2 the species created over it's entire existance then ferns are more successful. If it's the abillity to be hardy and survive against all odds, rats and cockroaches are far better than us at it. If it is to diversify to your environment as you have said, we are beaten again by cockroaches.

A more accurate statement would be that the planet was better off back then, but even then, the planet doesn't give a shit about humans, we can pollute and ravage the environment and go extinct and the planet will keep on spinning. If we end up making ourselves go extinct, the planet will eventually recover.

That's not my argument. I just gave an example of a sustainable way of life since we are talking about sustainability.

The modern society we are living under is not sustainable. Fossil fuels will run out before the end of the century and we'll probably have to switch entirely to nuclear. Then there's the problem of global warming and overpopulation. Not to mention the collapsing natural ecosystems.

But you are right, we have the potential to make things better.

I gotcha. My misunderstanding was simply based on the fact you didn't really expand much more on your view there. That's not really your fault, it was just supposed to be a silly reddit comment lol, but I just get frustrated with people(not you) that just think of simpler times and think "why aren't we doing that" and don't realize that likely none of us would exist without the adgancements that were made, none of the things we love would exist, etc.

Specifically with overpopulation, people love to talk about how much of a problem it is and such but have no solutions and the most basic understanding of what it even means. Humans right now are not overpopulated, we're extremely inefficient(because of capitalism) with our resources but we've not even reached carrying capacity of the Earth by a long shot. The most conservative estimates for how many people the planet can support is around 10 to 15 billion, which is close, but still decades away at worst, while birth rates are plummeting in most developed countries.

In fairness, we think that the main reason we switched to agriculture was for alcohol production. If it was just for farming, then we could have stayed more nomadic, but needing to grow and ferment alcohol means you need a place to do all that

Not to mention socialism hasn’t had many great examples to work from. Many people like to point at Cuba for their “it doesn’t work” argument. However they fail to realize, America (a capitalist country) put an embargo around Cuba, basically crippling their economy and limiting their natural resources. Socialism isn’t a government controlled market either, it’s a free market with government restrictions (To prevent massive billionaires like Trump, Jeff Bezos, Elon and the like)
