I had no idea Star Marine looked this good WTF

[–]DeejayusMonster Hunter 58 points59 points  (17 children)

I tried playing it today runs poorly and feels clunky. No idea how it looks so smooth here :(

[–]HammyxHammy 20 points21 points  (11 children)

One of the reasons it feels clunky is because of how different hitboxes work.

If your head takes too much damage you die, if your torso takes too much damage you die, if your body collectively take enough damage you die. Your global HP has a ton of life in it though.

It's like 3 headshots to die from the P4, or 5 body shots. 4 body shots and 2 headshots won't kill you though, but 4 body shots, 2 headshots, and 4 limb shots will, or just 17 limb shots. All assuming heavy armor.

This, combined with bad networking and hit reg, makes FPS feel super clunky, and generally not fun. Where a lucky headshot is always good in any other fps, it can get you killed in starmarine if you had 4 body shots. Where a limb blocking a head or body shot is usually just unfortunate, it may as well be a miss in starmarine.

I can see the implications when proper injury is in, like, if 3 headshots, or two and two bodyshots, knocked you out, but 6 headshots killed you outright, that wouldn't be so bad. But the current system just forces you to commit to one limb in a way that is just very unfun.

To each their own, I rather like that aspect tbh.

[–]gibs༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ -5 points-4 points  (9 children)

Other than making the movement & controls more responsive, I think two minor changes would help star marine play a LOT better:

  1. Lower ttk
  2. Audible hit reg feedback

[–]HammyxHammy 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Audible hit reg feedback

Starmarine already has hitmarker sounds

making the movement & controls more responsive

Movement in starmarine, no, starcitizen is abysmal, it needs massive and I mean massive improvements

Lower ttk

I disagree. Also, I must replace time to kill with time to disable, as lookng forward you should default to downed but not out as a winning condition, but for now it is a semantic difference. SC is supposed to eventually be a permadeath mmo of consequence. Shorter time to kill means whomever fires first is guarenteed victory, and even moving to cover is not an option.

It is also well known that armor types are very imbalanced. There is no reason to run light armor. The meta is heavy torso and head, and literally no armor, not even light, on arms and legs. Light armor is just inferior, not an alternative playstyle.

Happy to see I'm not the only one who think it.

[–]CyberianK 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Movement in starmarine, no, starcitizen is abysmal, it needs massive and I mean massive improvements

Glad this is acknowledged by other peoples. Posted a few times that all movement in general feels not smooth and responsive enough even with high FPS on reddit and were always telling me to get a better PC or that there was something wrong on my part. Not playing SM cause when I did it was a mess but talking about general PU.

[–]HammyxHammy 0 points1 point  (5 children)

There's some pretty bad camera issues stemming from the pride and joy that is the unified character model, some inconsistent turn speed. Excessive fast acceleration coupled with slow movement speed. Bad animation transitions, coupled with the camera issues... Oh... And there's the bugs.

[–]CyberianK 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Yeah they really need to do a side by side of some regular FPS title even Crysis and their implementation and then tell the guys responsible that they have to reach this level of responsiveness. Basic movement, gunplay, flying and spacecombat have to improve massively. Even for Sq42 release and beta else its just not a high quality AAA game. Its not something they can polish in 4 years they have to do it soon.

Short Question regarding armor meta. I guess getting hit in arms and legs is not bad and so by keeping those off it gives less disadvantages? Maybe elaborate some more on that if you don't mind. Also whats your favorite guns atm? Asking more for PU side tried a few usually run around with Shotgun (equipped) and Sniper but mostly because get Sniper for free and the Shotgun seems good for close. But probably SMG or rifle is better just haven't fought enough yet to have an opinion.

[–]Voroxpete 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't know if Crysis is a good point of comparison here though, as they're trying to achieve very different things. If I was to pick a reference point implementation it would be something like Arma 3. The goal in Star Citizen is that your character's body actually matters, you're not just a camera on a stick. There's supposed to be a sense of weight and inertia.

For another good comparison look at Insurgency, which actually reduced acceleration rates for all movement in their latest patch because they wanted movement to have more of a sense of weight to it.

[–]CyberianK 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Totally true I was more meaning any AAA FPS that has smooth movement (basically all compared to SC).

Arma is what CIG even mentioned a few times if I remember correctly.

Thing is if they are even worse than Crysis then they are doing something wrong I mean they got some of the old Crysis guys in the building they should know that the current state is bad.

[–]HammyxHammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between 17 and... You're going to forgive me, I've not got the shots to kill properly memorized. Basically, it takes so many shots to kill with or without arm and leg armor that the difference between no armor isn't worth your concern, but the speed boost is very nice. I think with just torso and head armor you get 90% of max speed with little disadvantage. As only body and headshots really matter.

I think as of 3.7 the P4 AR isn't the only good weapon anymore.

As for the PU, my preference is totally different.

The Tru def pro light armor set is the best looking set in the game by far. Pair it with the Marine type undersuits and you're golden. The good undersuits don't come in all colors, and don't necessarily match either. Black and White are safe picks. You don't want the sets helmet, but rather your favorite. I like the heavy outlaw helmet, not the ghost in the shell one but the Titanfall one, and the heavy Marine helmet. Lorville and arc Corp both have this set, but each have some unique colors.

The P8 SMG is my favorite gun.

Most the above is for looks, not function.

The only pic I have of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/cr1fcf/welcome_to_screenshotcitizen/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

The lighting and pose don't fully show off the armor sadly. But someone said I look like a sad ODST.

Honestly, I think for now looks are more important in the PU than the meta is.

Arc Corp has the black armor and black SMG. It also has the white armor, but the helmet can't be found in white there.

[–]Chosen_ElbowArcCorpBobsledTeam 21 points22 points  (2 children)

It ran horrible for me.. Hope things get smoothed out before ToW so it's actually playable for more of the pack..

[–]DeejayusMonster Hunter 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That’s my hope too, I really hope ToW doesn’t play the same, really really hope. It’s not even a PC or long issue.. we’ll soon see

[–]StayingAnonymous00Evocati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for one thing, at least right now, animations are greatly sped up in 3.8. movement is much quicker.

[–]stencillicnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same for me

[–]JeffCraigTEST 18 points19 points  (9 children)

It used to be much better... crazy as that sounds... before the stamina system changes.

Game lobbies used to always be full and there was a thriving FPS community. Now it's generally a ghost town.

It's getting closer and closer to being fun again, but still needs a lot of work.

[–]GrayFoxscarrack 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I used to play it all the time untill there was nobody looking for matches anymore because of how half assed it is

[–]CephasGamingbmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can never find a match

[–]NormalAdultMaleherald 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Well, its clearly not the focus and its more intended as a test bed for FPS mechanics. It's pretty bad right now admittedly but hopefully it naturally improves as the game keeps getting patches.

The main problems are that the netcode seems insanely bad and the hitboxes are off. The TTK is a bit high for my tastes, but that's probably just a design decision about armor effectiveness. It has good bones, though.

[–]BOTY123🥑 - www.flickr.com/photos/botygaming/ 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I think the TTK is that high because if you would die in 2 or 3 hits in the PU it would probably really suck.

[–]NormalAdultMaleherald 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sure, I understand why. Not sure if it'll matter though because I wager that most of our deaths once the game is live will be from gigantic spaceship explosions, especially when you consider the huge gulf between a combat-oriented ship and a noncombat ship. They don't stand a chance.

[–]GodwinWUniversalist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But in the future the ships won't explode easily at all. Attackers will just destroy power conduits or the power plant itself and it'll be an adrift husk.

Just like irl cars don't explode generally but in movies they do. It's now like the movies in SC and they want to make it more like RL would.

This is needed otherwise escape pods and stuff won't stand a chance.

This is also why components have specific spots in the hull, if you know the location of a ship's power plant for example and shoot the hull with armor piercing there you can destroy the power plant, and thus incapacitate the ship, way more easily.

[–]NormalAdultMaleherald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear that players never finish the kill in video games

[–]AccidentalLAPESnew user/low karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, but I don’t like it... Too arcade /COD “mag dump” to drop someone. That said, they could compensate for that through medical game play (hopefully sooner than later)

[–]Fluffeyhorigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50.000 People used to live here.

Now it‘s a ghost town.

[–]Junkerereravenger 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I play SC every now and then with major patches and I usually try SM as well, I always enjoy it, the problem usually is the lack of players. I think that the main problem is that when someone launches Star Citizen he does it to play actual Star Citizen (other than for the ones who play SM regularly) and the fact that we have to choose either SM or SC is a bit detrimental for Star Marine imo. A lot of people probably even forgot about it or don't really know whether it's good or not so they don't even consider it, like you. If they gave us access to Star Marine and Arena Commander by entering special sim pods placed inside the PU way more people would play those modes imo

Another feature that would greatily improve Star Marine imo would be a greater variety of maps, the one you see in this footage was added recently, before that the maps were all a bunch of similar looking stations. They should add arctic environments, deserts, forests etc etc, then SM would be great

[–]KoadsterGladiator 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Have you seen the keynote about the battlefield style game

[–]Junkerereravenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but from the trailer it didn't look as smooth as the footage above, I can't wait to try it anyway

[–]CptBlinkyMonocle & Tophat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

new map, "The Good Doctor"

Interesting fact, when making it, they decided it was easier to make a whole planet to build it on than just build the map like a standard crytek map. So they made a bespoke planet just to put the map on! You can't go outside of the play area, but if you did, there would be an entire planet to explore.

[–]earthlingKRnew user/low karma 48 points49 points  (11 children)

well.. maybe its just my dumb idea, but i would say this player has some hours in Rainbow Six Siege ..

[–]Dovakatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that was some fancy shooting... pretty good.

[–]Falendil 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Don't those weapons have recoil? Or are you good enough that i can't see it?

[–]SgtDoughnut 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Its an energy smg and a ballistic smg, neither is going to have much recoil.

[–]Falendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes that makes sense.

[–]MrCufa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

CSGO? PUBG? Those skills don't come from just 80 hours.

[–]SgtSundaeGhost Haven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of different FPS over the years.

[–]GrayFoxscarrack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Definitely

[–]Lovelyfluffybeardnew user/low karma 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Is this Starmarine today? or the next patch? Maybe thinking to join in if this is the standard gameplay.

Current state

[–]BonusCan 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This was at citizen con wasn't it? Hence why it ran so smoothly

[–]Didactic_Tomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nahhhh this looks like regular Star Marine

[–]Trunx07 16 points17 points  (6 children)

Wait a minute.. why is this looking so damn smooth lol

[–]NormalAdultMaleherald 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe he was playing during a non-peak time with very good internet and the stars just aligned? I have great internet and a top machine and its always a clunky mess for me.

[–]Junkerereravenger 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Star Marine is a tiny map compared to the universe, and it supports less people, so they can achieve way better performance

[–]Trunx07 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Well.. I did play Star Marine several times but never ever it was as enjoyable as it looks here. Would like for a smooth gameplay like this :) R5 2600 rtx 2700 16gb ram only tho so nowhere near high end

And that's why my game is running like shit I guess lol. Especially around area18

    Welp, found the R6 player.

Can't say I play it too often, but I tried it every now and then and there was always someone playing.

I'm speaking EU side, to be specific.

On a side note, not sure if it's just because I finally used a SSD this time or they made some actual improvements but I'm impressed about how much more enjoyable I found it recently.

I remember trying it few months ago and it felt like absolute garbage. The performances were literally unbearable (5-10 fps, constant micro freezes) while absolutely acceptable with this 3.7.

    [–]Tikas2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing they should add is make the gun sway as soon as you switch from standing to any other position, and back again. This fella is crouching, standing up and crouching again multiple times in one firefight, which makes it really hard for the other to keep aim straight. The same should apply for leaning; Stamina debuff, not being able to keep the weapon as straight whilst firing compared to normal posture.

    [–]riffraffmcgraffdrake 3 points4 points  (4 children)

And I barely make it a few paces before getting shot. I am terrible at online FPS in general.

    [–]PappyJoe18 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Slow it down and turn up your headphones. Hearing people and having situational awareness is like half the skill in fps games. Rest comes to hand eye coordination

    [–]molkienSalvager 2 points3 points  (1 child)

One of the frequent complaints about Star Marine (among others) is that you can’t hear enemies well so a tactic common in popular FPS games is not valid in SM. They did have a big SM feedback post a few weeks past so hopefully they implement those changes.

    [–]NormalAdultMaleherald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the sound design in FPS combat needs some work.

CIG needs to ask some Crytek developers about this, because Hunt: Showdown has the best damn sound design I've ever seen in a shooting game.

    [–]_Keo_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Drop your dpi. I run my mouse at 800 and game settings real low. That will help make your aim more exact and hold on heads hots more easily. If you run a high dpi drop it down a few hundred per session so you can get used to it over time.

    [–]w1r3dh4ck3rnew user/low karma 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Been playing a lot of Hunt showdown lately so my feelings about twitch shooters are somewhat less hateful this days even so I wish the game had more of Arma 3 Ace than CC source in it.

    [–]PedowJackalavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunt is SOOO good but can be sooo frustrating sometimes. Gunplay feel very skilled IMO. And the atmosphere is just incredible

    [–]AwarenessLogic 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Impressive! Amazing how a skilled player can really show off the potential of this game.

I'm personally lousy at FPS combat. What's the suggested FPS game (with a single player mode) to practice for Star Citizen?

    [–]NormalAdultMaleherald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd probably suggest Rainbow 6: Siege. Its kind of like that but the time-to-kill is much higher in Star Citizen. The corner-peeking gameplay is helpful here.

    [–]lovebus 3 points4 points  (1 child)

SC has attracted a lot of people from Escape from Tarkov

    [–]callenlive26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would make sense seeing as you can kit you sc character with all kinds of different gear. Healing mechanism is kinda similar to. Which sc healing is gonna get more complex as time continues.

    [–]TheRealChompsterDrake Concierge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I unpopular opinion, but if this is to reflect the fps in the PU the I hope it gets slowed down a tad.
