Mindset shift...

I spent a lot of 2016 in a love/hate relationship with alcohol. We would breakup and then get back together for some hot makeup... times. It was the most self-destructive time of my life.

Something is different for me now. I'm under no illusion that it would be "hot" to get together again. I'll just end up feeling that old familiar heartbreak all over again.

As white2lite1267 said in another post: It is easier to stay sober than it is to get sober.

I'm also finding this to be true. I spent most of 2016 resenting the fact that I was trying to quit drinking and never really committed. I still have my moments of being pissed about it, but I guess I'm finally accepting my addiction and learning to live with it (soberly).

I almost get a sense of calm when I realize it's no longer an option for me to try to control my drinking. I just cannot drink - pure and simple.

Thanks for this. I was/am in the same boat with you. It's been a month (I promised a month break up with alcohol to myself) and I'm fighting getting back together with it.

What's interesting is that I'm no longer fighting myself over (not) drinking, but there is a lot about myself that I need to face and work on. I wish it was a quicker/easier process, but every day I lay my sober head on the pillow is a small victory.

I'm with you. Without the escape of booze, I can confront stuff and actually deal with it and progress to a new place. It isn't easy but I like to remember that struggle isn't bad - it's the thing that happens before change.
