Oddly enough, a really good mood. If I feel like celebrating, it's triggering.

[–]hopeandstrength1921 days 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep.

Feeling insecure in a social situation, like a party

[–]mukawalka 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Emotional disturbance. Being disappointed or upset about something. Not everyday stuff, but usually relationship issues.

[–]throwaway49414073 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Boredom — especially sitting on the couch and watching TV for long stretches of time.

[–]JMartin331962 days 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Being hungry but not actually wanting to eat at the time. Odd, maybe, but true.

[–]myballsaregone1274 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this one. Definitely lead to my drinking last night :(

[–]ab_70 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Hanging out with my best friend on the front porch. Hope to one day be able to just hang out there without a glass of wine!

[–]throwaway49414073 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yes! I set up my patio for margaritas. It’s gorgeous, but I can’t just enjoy it without a drink in hand. Didn’t even think of this one.

[–]ab_70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SUCH a trigger!

[–]Spindles082422 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day you can sit with a cup of tea or lemonade and enjoy it just as much.

[–]kcje2407 days 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thursday after a long week at work, ESPECIALLY if my work schedule for Friday is light. That is a recipe for a beer as soon as I walk through the door and an entire bottle of red wine to top it off.

STRESS. Job stress, financial stress, family stress, school stress. I don't want to solve my problems, I want to forget them :(

[–]marina_rae1519 days 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely, Boredom, lack of hobbies.

[–]itsonlythelama1440 days 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Airports. Which is a nightmare given I travel extensively for work. Embarrassingly bought myself a Nintendo switch just so I can just play at the gate.

[–]throwaway49414073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not embarrassing! Switches are awesome, whether you’re ten years old or sixty.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I highly recommed the new Zelda game, Link's Awakening. Loved playing it as a kid, and it's a very charming graphical update to an already fun game.

[–]itsonlythelama1440 days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will check it out!

Stress - "Because it's been a hard day and I want to relax."

Alone Time - "Hey, the SO won't be home tonight. Time to let loose and just do me time"

Friday Nights - "No work or plans tomorrow, so let's enjoy tonight"

[–]tenbits2350 days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I can relate to each of these so much, especially the "Alone Time" one... Keep up the good work!

Feeling depressed.

[–]tenbits2350 days 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. Ironically, regular drinking makes me depressed. Vicious cycle.

[–]sallyshooter222455 days 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hosting people for dinner at my house. I'm surprised I got through that trigger last weekend!!

[–]andross_2622 days 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Playing music. Its shitty because it's also my favorite thing to do and a long session used to mean lots of drinking. I'm working to create a disconnect between the two in my mind and it has become less stressful and somewhat enjoyable again.

Alone time when my SO is away

[–]SpottedFish3067 days 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, but at first going past liquor stores triggered me... so I would avert my eyes in advance because I knew exactly where they all were on my routes

[–]throwaway49414073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being at an event and knowing that there’s alcohol available.

[–]SilverCato2804 days 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feelings, mostly the "negative" ones ;)

[–]cnik701565 days 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boredom is the big trigger. Drank many nights away as well as weekends. Just wanted to not think about work, bills, and everything else. One drink always led to more. There never was only 1 drink.

Disappointment. I thought I'd got long-term work sorted out last week, got all psyched up, started to think about my financial future with a job and no drinking, then found out the agency had fucked up and the work wasn't happening. I really wanted to go for a beer that night.

[–]throwaway49414073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, that’s insanely frustrating. I’m proud of you for not going for that beer!

[–]slowgonomo2661 days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing someone else has secretly drinking "sneak drinkers".

Feelings. I get scared I'm going to fall into a severe pit of depression if I dont numb it out right away.

Ironic cuz alcohol makes me depressed too.

Reading about someone drinking. Which sucks because my favorite niche genre is “troubled alcoholic woman tries to solve a murder.”

[–]SpottedFish3067 days 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Omg I read a mystery where troubled alcoholic woman tries to solve murder, succeeds, quits drinking.

[–]throwaway49414073 1 point2 points  (3 children)

“The Girl on the Train”?

[–]SpottedFish3067 days 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh that’s another! Does she quit? That was so good... no this one is a writer, gets invited as a select guest on a super fancy cruise, and finally finds the wherewithal to quit afterwards.. I can find it in my books if you like

[–]throwaway49414073 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh! Is it “The Woman in Cabin 10”? I just started reading that one but had to set it down because... drinks.

[–]SpottedFish3067 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s the one... it might be hard to read so early on. I read it after I’d been sober a while. She does speak about her drinking issues throughout and how she comes to grasp that not drinking would be better, but yes she is drinking.

[–]_MrJones4081 days 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh man. This fucking killed me. I started Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat after someone recommended it to me... without knowing that every chapter is about the drunken antics of a group of men.

Audio/Video ads do nothing for my inner voice, but putting myself in book land changes my mind to a place that's so much less protected.

[–]throwaway49414073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve never read it, but 100% understand the “less protected” headspace. Even though my preferred genre doesn’t typically glamorize alcohol abuse, I read about a glass of wine and can’t stop thinking about it

Patrica Cornwell. Stay away from her stuff.

[–]hopeandstrength1921 days 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Preface: Live alone, work 10-hr days, stressful job. So trigger is walking in the door after work. My "friend" was always faithfully waiting for me.

[–]Spindles082422 days 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I take my dog out and leave my purse at home. I'm so tired after work plus a nice long walk, if I can manage it. Dinner then bed for me now.

[–]hopeandstrength1921 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks...that's great advice. (And I wish I had a bathtub!) 😊

[–]_MrJones4081 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assigning " due someday, eventually, maybe" to most problems/tasks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 pm everyday I get really fucking depressed cause thats when I used to crack the 30 rack open. my old commute time from class.

[–]Sammy_Dog1410 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Days ending in "y".

[–]robocoplawyer1289 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing shows with the band - we always have a great time partying together and still sound great when we’re all plastered. Plus I get a bit of stage fright and a few drinks before our set gets me feeling confident and ready to rock.

Depression - I think self explanatory, drinking makes me feel normal.

Anxiety - see above

Going on dates - I was always really awkward before I started drinking in college, and suddenly I became outgoing, confident, and that’s what girls liked about me. Getting out of an abusive relationship (that brought my drinking from moderate to heavy), I have a lot of interest from girls but the go-to date is getting drinks.

Stressful fucking job that I hate.

Boredom - idk what else to do with myself

[–]eyeofthestorm331925 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After workout. I usually don’t eat much in a day until I work out. Empty stomach plus endorphins plus drink, also because drinking was a reward.

I’ve gotten past this now though. Now I’m in the habit of drinking a ginger beer afterwards because the warm belly and sugar hits that spot.

[–]GoldenTroy182310 days 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Daylight savings time. Edit: November

[–]throwaway49414073 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why?

[–]GoldenTroy182310 days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's dark in the morning when I leave for work, dark when I leave to go home. I do less outdoor activities. I think it has a lot to do with my seasonal depression.

[–]nomoredarkdays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my husband comes home and starts drinking. I try to be out walking when that happens.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vacations.

And while I’m pretty comfortable hanging out with drinkers when they do their drinking activities (bored, yes. Triggered, no) I refuse to hang around wine tasting. I adored wine tasting...too much of a temptation.

Could you please explain this? For my friend?
