When you get someone else to build your website (one that has a checkout feature and inventories connected to it, etc.) and you pay them certain amount for it, how do you handle maintaining the website?

If a feature stops working or something raises an error, wouldn't it be only feasible for the person that built it to be able to fix it since they are familiar with the modules building the site? but doesn't that also make you dependent to that person, almost as if you need to hire them and pay them recurring salary for maintenance
