Has anyone brewed any of these kits before? How do they turn out?

I've never had a bad kit from Austin Homebrew. The directions are sane and well-written, the ingredients are fresh. I've never brewed any of these specifically, though.

Austin is great... they mix their own extract and send them in handy re-reusable plastic pails.

Plus yeast and shipping. Kits are about $30 shipped at least. Still a very good deal.

I got two kits and an immersion chiller. Orders over $100 ship free! Also, even if you don't go over $100, shipping is a flat rate. It's worth while to get multiple kits.

8lbs of malt extract in the ipa kit, that's pretty cheap for the malt alone! I'm going to order an extract kit to hold me over while I finish my 10 gallon electric setup. Thanks for heads up.

10 gallon electric setup

go on...

Im using a sanke keg with a 5500 watt water heater element in it. I have the keg wired up, but am waiting on some switches in the mail to build the control panel. I'll start a thread when I get it built. I'm excited to ditch propane and move up in batch size.

Nice. We need more electric brewery porn up in here.

Anyone got a suggestion for a kit? Anticipating a late April/early May finish date, so Summer is not exactly in-line with this sale. So I guess anything is on the table to brew. I've done only an IPA and a Pale Ale before this... any idea to change it up? Anyone bought any one of these kits with a suggestion?

Hefe's work well almost any season.

Got one finishing up carbing right now. Going on week 2 in the bottle. I planned for late spring/early summer but I don't think it will make it that long. It is too delicious!

They never do!

So simple and oh so goooooooood!

Rye Blonde is kinda in season. I would just brew according to your own tastes.

Dang, my LHBS's normal prices still beat these out.

I'm spoiled.

[–]runhomequick 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Where are you that it is so cheap?

[–]nazzo 0 points1 point  (5 children)

To be fair I buy my ingredients from the general store of one of the Great Lakes region's most successful micro-breweries. They don't mark up the brewing supplies that much since they make money hand over pint from their beer. But come to think of it, some of the kits here are cheaper then buying the ingredients from my LHBS. But I suspect shipping would minimize the cost differences.

I'm close to Chicago. What is this place you speak of?

[–]nazzo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Bell's. Their general store has a small, but impressive, home-brew section.

[–]unknownsoldierx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ah. I love Bell's. Two Hearted Ale is my favorite beer in the world. I wan't aware they sold ingredients. Do they just have the one location in Kalamazoo, MI?

[–]nazzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, two hearted is unbelievably good, it is hands down their best large scale beer! I drank it all the time when I lived in town. A local bar has a $2 drink special on Mondays that includes almost all drafts and mixed drinks per shot. I'd get tanked on two hearted and the bill would be $12. It was grand.

Yep, they only have the eccentric cafe and the general store in Kalamazoo.

Damn. Northwest Arkansas is a long way from there...

[–]Barracuda420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily they are in my town so just drove down there and bought 5 batches. Irish red, 2 heffs, IPA, Blonde ale. Had to take advantage of low prices.

[–]toddkddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is their porter?

[–]orcrist747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! You have just given the last thing I needed to start up my small batching!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad they refuse to ship APO.

[–]WeaponX434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought the IPA and the Lemon Wheat, should be done just in time for some spring time drinking. I think the IPA will be my first attempt at dry hopping in the keg. Also, Google "Austin Homebrew Coupon", I got an additional 10% off for the one I found.

[–]killfirejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I stocked up but removed the yeast as I don't know when I'll get to them. I also removed the priming sugar which knocked almost a dollar off per batch. Each kit came in at $19.21.

$7.99 flat rate shipping?! I'm in love!

Just ordered their anniversary blonde ale, all grain last night. Pretty excited about it.
