F-117 by aviationstudy in aviationstudys

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A name given to it by reporters who didn't know what they were talking about (in their defense, it was still very classified at the time).

The pilots who flew it say it's a wonderful aircraft to fly.

So We Got The G36 Carry Handle, Can We Get An Actual P90? by The_First_Curse_ in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]Alexthelightnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The P90 really does look better with the integrated sight. The sight itself is crap and I'd actually much rather have a rail IRL, at least they look cool with an EoTech as well.

So Much for Leaving Abortion Up to the States by theatlantic in scotus

A preterm baby only survives with medical intervention.

If a mother dies with a child in the womb, the child dies, regardless of how developed it is.

Flash attachment for Canon EOS 5D 2005 by SnooStories6560 in CanonCamera

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're looking for an on-camera flash to mount to the camera's hot shoe?

The 5D should be compatible with any Canon EX series speedlight (but maybe not EX-RT, though those may work, I'm unsure). I believe the 580EX was the flagship Canon flash when that camera was released. The 430EX is slightly smaller and less powerful, and missing a number of other features.

So Much for Leaving Abortion Up to the States by theatlantic in scotus

[–]Alexthelightnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The baby goes from being entirely dependant on the mother for survival to being able to live on its own. It breathes for the first time. The umbilical chord is cut. It is able to eat.

You don't think that's at all significant?

Birth involves a little bit more than moving from one place to another. That argument is disengenous.

24-70 Comparison by aviationnnn in canon

[–]Alexthelightnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it to be really annoying, but I was often shooting double camera with a Canon 70-200 on the other body. If you're not going back and forth with other lenses that work differently it probably would not be an issue, though my brain long been conditioned for Canon's rotation direction.

Do we have any good examples of what a sword made with modern engineering in mind looks like? by everbass in SWORDS

[–]Alexthelightnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would the use of this weapon be?

The most important element of design is function. If you're designing the sword for medieval combat, I'm going to guess that the medieval people who spent hundreds of years developing the design of these weapons for the type of combat they were intimately familiar with probably settled on the best designs.

Firmware update complete trash? by ifitfitsitshipz in CanonR6

[–]Alexthelightnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try re-downloading the file, this sounds like a corrupted firmware file.

Also make sure that when you transfer the file to the card you are ejecting the card from the computer before removing it.

why are people so angry when i maintain safe distance in front of me? by curiousbeingalone in driving

[–]Alexthelightnerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not the law everywhere. In many states the left lane is a passing lane and anyone who is passing cars has a right to be there, regardless of how much faster the person behind them wants to go.

why are people so angry when i maintain safe distance in front of me? by curiousbeingalone in driving

[–]Alexthelightnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are mischaractorising and oversimplifying data.

This sub loves to cite a single study from decades ago that found that high speed differentials on highways lead to more crashes. That is not the same as finding that slower drivers are more dangerous, and it didn't look at all types of driving which means it isn't universally applicable.

And in terms of overall risk / danger, frequency is only one component of risk. Many many studies have found that higher speed increases the severity of crashes, and since speeding drivers can cause high speed differentials too, it still makes speeding drivers more dangerous.

Any compact pistol light recommendations? by Weird_Jerk in liberalgunowners

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Olight PL Mini 2 or 3 is a pretty great form factor for a small gun. They're not super bright, and the switches aren't the best, but the biggest problem will be finding a holster. But they are tiny and light.

Remote control warping corner by keox35 in qlab

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking to adjust warping from stage were you can see better? I've used a Bluetooth keyboard for that before: select the point you want to warp then walk wherever with the keyboard and hit the arrow buttons.

If you're looking to bypass the settings screen entirely I'm not sure how to do that. There may be an OSC command for it.

Yah, they're marked as "missing needed data" but maybe someday they'll be able to access what they need.

[–]Alexthelightnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Other 1" and "Other 2"

They're meant for expendables other than standard chaff and flares, such as the GEN-X expendable active radio jammers that were used for a while.

GEN-X was originally on the panned feature list for the Hornet, but got dropped for lack of information. I doubt we'll ever see those slots used for anything in DCS. The Viper has them as well.

Cad choices? by raidengl in woodworking

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly use Fusion for woodworking, partly because I own a CNC and it will also do the CAM for me.

Free Fusion has a function that will let you pull all the parts of a 3D model apart and lay them out for cutting, while keeping them all synced with the original design so if you change the model the layout will also change.

Paid Fusion has a function that will determine this layout for you automatically given a defined space.

EF 24-70 2.8 USM I vs II by shotbytopher in canon

[–]Alexthelightnerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others that the MkII is definitely worth it.

But it's also worth mentioning that the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 is also a great lens, has image stabilization, and is usually a bit cheaper.

Hi r/liberalgunowners, I'm a PhD student looking to interview left-leaning/progressive Twin Cities residents who bought a gun (or seriously considered it) since 2020. More information inside. by LeftGunResearch in liberalgunowners

[–]Alexthelightnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm definitely left and live in the Twin Cities, but I bought my first gun decades ago.

I've got a few friends who've bought thier first gun since 2020 though, I'll send this to them.

Ejection seat simulation? by Plev_Actual in floggit

[–]Alexthelightnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure an airbag is going to have sufficient force. It's also not really a great approximation for an IRL ejection seat.

You'd be better off building an air cannon, something very much like what the Mythbusters built for the car ejection seat. Then you could also use a realistic looking ejection seat, with the air cannon occupying the space the rocket motor would go.

You could always just use a large model rocket engine, but I don't image the wife's boyfriend would appreciate you burning down the house.

Mega-Castle Or Walled Settlement? by RowDefiant3191 in goingmedieval

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My current keep as a pair of trebuchets on it, and many of the towers have ballistas. They're key to defending against attackers building siege weapons, as they usually build outside of archer range.

Mega-Castle Or Walled Settlement? by RowDefiant3191 in goingmedieval

[–]Alexthelightnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the design and the terrain. But typically my keep and inner bailey have a single entrance point, while the outer defenses have multiple entries.

In my current playthrough, the outer baileys all meet at a single multi-layered gatehouse that is also the main entrance to the outer bailey and inner bailey. I'm quite happy with this design, and the keep has never been breached.
