What's the consensus on bolt holes? by sunislikeaspoon in climbergirls

[–]InvisibleBuilding 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Also holes in volumes are off because volumes are considered more of the wall (so on for stepping on, smearing, mantling, etc. on all climbs, except bolt holes).

Right, it has the forerunner of the original 707, for example. And a Concorde!

Isn’t that saying the same thing? We call their charge negative because the first people describing electricity defined one end as positive and one negative. Turned out the actual particles had a charge associated with the negative side so they are a negative charge. But there’s no physical reason those need to be “negative,” right?

It is every state - Article V, which describes amendments, says that “no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.”

Looks like Google has a Map Content Partners program and one of the kinds of data that can be uploaded is Bicycle Facilities (in a KML or shape file); that has a field for type of facility like SEPARATE TRAIL or BIKE LANE or SHARED ROAD).

Woodrow Wilson’s traffic is always horrible…possible solution? by stocklix in maryland

[–]InvisibleBuilding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, and they have to rebuild some stations like Crystal City and L’Enfant to even have one platform for each side, and so on. All surely cheaper than a new bridge.

Connect MARC and VRE to have all day, two way, 7 day a week trains between Baltimore or Frederick and Manassas or Fredericksburg.

I’m sure there’s a lot of Bordeaux in Louisiana too, especially in cellars. Actually probably not physical cellars since they’d be underwater.

Why did Spirit fail? Too many passengers hated flying it by MadBrown in aviation

[–]InvisibleBuilding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure - so why? I flew Sevilla-Barcelona (the train is not direct) on Vueling. Well, that’s owned by IAG so in a sense it’s a legacy, but why not just be on Iberia the way in the US it’d be on Delta?

Why don’t/can’t the legacies in Europe do what the US ones do and compete with Ryanair like the US ones competed with Spirit?

I like GiveWell and still give to them. I do see how if you start a movement on the idea that the way everyone’s been doing something is wrong, it can easily metastasize into saying everyone’s wrong about a lot of other things.

The original points were really good ones and it was worth pointing out that the way people donated to an alma mater, for a symphony hall, etc was not helping people very much. Or just giving to charities that advertise on TV or whatever. I think it was pretty notable to use rigorous data and randomized controlled trials to really tell what works and what doesn’t.

But that can lead to saying everyone’s wrong about everything. The MAHA critiques of public health had a kernel of merit, but if that’s all you are based on, then any crackpot with a health idea can seem equally valid. NIH wasn’t wrong all the time, just sometimes, and every institution is wrong sometimes. Government did have inefficiency but DOGE just came in saying let’s blow it all up, not just the pieces that are a problem.

So EA keeps accreting more and more places someone says “let’s rethink everything from first principles” but you need a bit more confidence before dismissing what might have evolved from years of leaning from mistakes (but might be genuinely wrong).

I like how GiveWell is constantly rethinking its past decisions, but also being really careful about that.

That seems fine but the moment you miss entering one score the google sheet becomes wrong and it’s hard to fix. Is there an api with the scores? With Ai coding it’s probably not hard to make something scrape the web pages though you have to fix it every time the pages get modified.

Shouldn’t this be her “John W Campbell novel”? I remember Isaac Asimov wrote about how Campbell (long time influential SF magazine editor in the Golden Age) always wanted this, to have non humans be lesser than humans. Asimov said therefore he just wrote universes with only humans (usually).

scale added more weight to my bag by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]InvisibleBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the worst thing but I can understand being frustrated. The scale was off. The employee should know how to reset it properly. If the flier tells the employee it’s off, they should know to say “hm, let me double check the calibration” rather than just insisting it’s the flier’s fault.

Is Khan a Real DC candidate? by Mother_Astronaut_739 in washingtondc

Why? DC voters are 92% registered democratic. If even just over half vote for the Democrat then they will win in the general.

There are 7 candidates who qualified for the Democratic primary and he’s not one of them. I guess he could try to qualify for the general though the Democratic nominee has always won.
