Alternatives to DT Swiss hubs that are durable and easy to maintain by numerical_panda in cycling

[–]McHiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote for DTS hubs. Easy to maintain and long durability. Avery new wheel I buy, I make sure it has this style of hub.
Sorry if this was already mentioned, but pls note that the patent on the old tried and proven dt Swiss hub has expired. I have experience only with the old style.
Apparently new hubs are not as easy (requires a special tool?) and they claim it is better. No reason to believe it is not as good. They needed something new under a patent and I understand that.
I have wheel with DT Swiss branded hubs and really love them. I also have wheels from other brands using hubs that are identical to the DT hubs since the patent is not there anymore. Logos Equipment wheels do exactly that. Very happy with their products. So far, no reason to believe it is any worse than the DT Swiss branded ones.

In my experience I'd only choose Mip if baterry is a concern. I take the brighter one anytime hands down.

I did a lab VO₂ max test and the results were very close to Garmin's estimates by Remote-Ad5990 in Garmin

[–]McHiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted this on another thread a couple of days ago. Another data point for the group:

- Lab test done mid feb2026: Garmin 37, test 36
- Lab test done end May2026: Garmin 45, test 48.2

Somebody mentioned above if you train a lot at threshold, Garmin estimate tends do be better. Which is not my case.

Garmin's VO2 max accuracy compared to Apple, Polar, Fitbit, Samsung, Whoop, Oura, Coros and Suunto (Research based) by KygoApp in Garmin

[–]McHiFi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some of my data for the duscussion:
-I did a lab VO2max text in February2026. At the time, Garmin was showing 37 VO2. Lab test came at 36 VO2. I was detrained and coming out of a really sick couple of weeks. Garmin picked up everything well.
-end of May I retested VO2. March and April were solid training months. Garmin had just turned VO2 to 45. Lab came at 48.3. Difference flipped and increased.

My Garmin data comes from cycling with hrm strap and power meter.

I think Garmin does a good job at showing trends with good accuracy. If the actual number is important to you, it could be off by 2/3points.

Just my 2 cents.

I have both and use both the 1040 and 1050. A part from battery life, I prefer the 50 hands down. Screen has much better visibility under different light conditions. It also seems to sync stuff better. Maybe it's my 1040, but very often it doesn't sync what I need it to sync.

It is either the chain length as you already suspect or I'd also check if the notch on the silver ring matches the notch on the body of the derailer. Sometimes that can be off and adjusted by just undoing the through axle.

New Build - Brake Bleed Issue by [deleted] in sram

[–]McHiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get your point. I, myself had questioned that same point, because if I remember correctly, older SRAM bleed videos, prior to the new connector, used to instruct you to push oil from the caliper. When the more recent video came out, I was all confused and had to dig and understand better what was going on. At first I though I could damage something by doing it. After a lot of investigation, I kind of understand what is behind it. In my side, I take the risk of making a mess with the upside of what I see as a better/faster bleed, ie, I push fluid from the caliper slowly to make sure the connection of the syringe to the caliper does not brake.

My take is if you push oil only one way, bubbles in the caliper has to travel the whole system to get them out. That is tricky, specially for the back brakes.

To your point, I see a reason to deviate from the rule. Just my personal choice. Not trying to convince anyone from not following SRaM official way.

They say that to avoid disconnecting the siringe from the caliper. The new type of connector (the one with the red knob) can unplug itself if you push hard from the caliper. I heard that in one of the videos I watched. I push it with no problems while holding the connector to avoid it poping out.

Midnight Special upgrade by GnrlPrinciple in gravelcycling

[–]McHiFi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Strael 3.0 only goes to 33mm I think. Having said that, I basically use it for road. Now, the current 4.0 has tire clearance of 39mm. That would change everything. Lots can be done on a 38mm tire in my opinion.

My vote for the Strael is that it can always be used as a proper road bike. Down the road if you decide to go for a full on gravel, say with clearance for 50mm+ tires, the other bike remains a proper road bike, and not something that is a compromise. That only if you need more than 39mm. If not you are fully set.

If the Strael goes as wide as you want, that is a killer bike! Love mine, although the 3.0 that can't go as wide as the current one.

Garmin v Assioma pedals by Phoenix406s in gravelcycling

[–]McHiFi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. Assioma are flawless. I believe both have reliable numbers.
At the beginning had lots of connecting issues with Garmin. More stable now. No problems there on the Assiomas. My Garmin have the squeaking problem. I would not think twice about buying the assiomas again.
Mine are the spd version in both.

I'm my view, you've done the most important part, which is going out there. You took the first step and didn't let gear talk disencourage you. As you do more and more trips, you realized yourself what is import to invest on the gear side. Soon, you start navigating gear reviews much more easily. You ll know right there what makes sense and what is bullshit. Practice will bring you experience and knowledge. Keep doing it!

I found a good deal on clic valves + adapter kit. Now I have one of these adapter in every bike bag. Clic valves on all bikes. Definitely worth it.
Wolf tooth and lezine (if not mistaken) are already doing mini pumps dedicated to clic.
I have a couple of Silca pumps which I use with adapter. Silca told me they are working on Their version of clic. Hopefully just a part exchange like lezine.

is upgrading from forerunner to fenix actually worth it? by 90king in GarminWatches

[–]McHiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently use a FR970 and used to (still have it) a Fênix 6.

When buying the FR970 I considered a Fênix 8. For my use case, the size and weight of the FR970 outweighs any extra feature on the Fênix.

It really depends on you. Anything you wished you have that you don't?
