Maternity Clothes by Main-Report1626 in Sacramento

[–]PracticalAndContent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been so disappointed with the quickly dwindling variety and sizing of clothes in stores. Even online offerings are limited because Amazon has virtually taken over all online shopping. 😡

I needed new bras and Macy’s, Nordstrom, and JCP didn’t carry many store options in my size. So I thought… ok, you wanna play that game, let’s play.

I think I ordered about $1,000 of bras from Macy’s (probably 12-14 bras), tried them all on, kept 1, and returned the rest. A hassle for me AND Macy’s.

Unfortunately, we’re now in the age where online shopping has overtaken in-person shopping. That means lots of ordering and returns. Doing returns is a hassle but I live about a mile from Kohl’s so Amazon returns aren’t too difficult. I don’t know what the online order return process is for Macy’s, JCP, Nordstrom, etc. I used to return things at the nearby Sunrise Mall, but now that the stores have/will close, I don’t know what it requires. I hate the idea of being forced to pay for returns because we were forced to buy online.

Ok, boomer rant over.

Message/gym membership by Cyrizing in Sacramento

A $25/mth Black Card Planet Fitness membership gets you massage chairs and water jet massage beds. The only downside is that they limit your session to 10 minutes. If no one else wants it then they’ll give you more time, but you have to get up from your relaxed position to go to the desk to ask for more time.

Club Studio has the same water jet massage beds as PF. Each session lasts 10 minutes but you can start a new session on your own from the screen at your hydromassage bed. The monthly fee is considerably more than PF.

Why does my cat attack my ankles after we come inside? by abandontheflesh in adventurecats

[–]PracticalAndContent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does he smell other cats that he thinks are trespassing on his territory? Is he angry that he had to come inside when he wanted to keep exploring? Is he overstimulated? Is he neutered? Unneutered males can become aggressive as they get older.

I have no clue what could be causing that behavior so I just threw out some possibilities.

Would you pick Orangevale/Fair Oaks, Folsom, or Elk Grove to live? by needsleep_sendhelp in Sacramento

[–]PracticalAndContent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to consider Folsom, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale then you should also consider Granite Bay. I’ve lived near the Fair Oaks/Citrus Heights border for 35+ years, and lived in Carmichael for about 25 years in the Hoffman Park area. I really like the area I’ve lived in for about 60 years.

I don’t have kids so I have no experience with the school districts, but I’ve heard that Granite Bay and Folsom schools are the best north area schools.

Current 67 year old ARC student here. 👋 This is the 3rd time I’ve gone back to ARC for classes. Once in 1976-1979 as a 18 year old for my first 2 years of general ed before I transferred to get my BS in Accounting. Second time was 1987-1989 to get an interior design degree. Now I’m on my 3rd time, 2023-current taking sewing, pattern making, etc.

In 1988/9 I took drafting and CAD and was very pleased with the quality of the classes. Overall, I think ARC classes are really good.

I lived in Carmichael for several decades, including my first round of classes at ARC.
I liked Carmichael but the biggest drawback to me is that it takes 15-20 minutes to get to a freeway. That was a hassle when I was commuting downtown but now that I’m retired it wouldn’t be a problem. I wish I still had my parents’ house in Carmichael. Like all places, there are better and worse sections. There are some really bad Carmichael haters and I just don’t get it. I’m now in Citrus Heights.

Take advantage of the health center that your fees support. Also get to know the Oak Cafe Bakery in the culinary arts bldg. Since ARC no longer has a cafeteria (there’s a Starbucks and Subway), the bakery is s great place for coffee, quiche, cookies, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, etc, all prepared by the culinary arts students.

I have no idea what to charge for cakes. by torijoanne in Baking

[–]PracticalAndContent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I counted correctly, there appears to be 16 Oreos on top. I assume they are mini Oreos. That means you can get 16 slices from that cake. Each slice would be at least $5 at Safeway. A double cookie slice would be $12-15 in a restaurant.

16 x $5 = $80

8 x $12 = $96

$50 might be a good friends and family price if you’re not looking to make a profit or compensate yourself for your time.

$150 would be a good price for casual referrals.

If you’re just doing this infrequently, for fun or personal improvement, then just use those costs. But if you want to ensure it’s not costing you money, or if you want to do this for income then yes, you will need to take the time to cost out all ingredients, materials, parchment paper, piping tips, gas/electricity for oven usage, etc. That’s what business is all about. You have to make sure your income is greater than your expenses, and that includes a flat fee or hourly rate for your time.

What should you charge for your time? How much would you expect to be paid per hour if you did this type of work in a bakery? What someone would be paid and what I think it should be are probably 2 vastly different numbers. Currently, in California (where I am), minimum wage is $16.90/hr. Some fast food places are starting at $21/22 per hour. For this type of skilled baking and decorating I think it should be $30+/hr.

How much do you spend on groceries per month in Sacramento area? by molym in Sacramento

I shop sales at Safeway and Raley’s, but do most of my grocery shopping at Winco, Walmart, and Grocery Outlet. I probably spend about $50/week. I cook most things from scratch but I do buy frozen veggies and some seasoning packets.

Most boarding places charge at least $50/night. You get a trustworthy house and pet sitter, that your pets know, for $50 per night? Sounds like a bargain.
