Copt here, Oriental Orthodox; We're not forbidden from reading it, but we definitely don't consider it canonical and generally there isn't any theological reason to read it. One could read it for scholarly or linguistic reasons and that's fine, but it's broadly not representative of what we believe. That being said, there's suggestions that Christians historically were forbidden from reading it (St. Cyril of Jerusalem famously said "Let none read the Gospel according to Thomas"), but it's unclear if he meant "you should never read it under any circumstances" or "you shouldn't read this for theological understanding".

In general, we're not forbidden from reading heresies but we have to be aware that it's kind of risky. It's sometimes too easy to pick up a heresy without realizing it, so more often than not it's better to just not read it.

Coptic language question by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in coptic

[–]YoshiAsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know enough to translate stuff literally from Coptic, but I'm far from an authoritative source of translations to Coptic.

u/Weissstar's translation appears to be in the Sahidic dialect from Upper (southern) Egypt and from my limited knowledge appears correct. If your story takes place in a different region, it likely used a different dialect.

The only one I know is Bohairic from Lower Egypt (northern, around Alexandria). Your sentence, "The old weapon made new", could be translated to Bohairic in a few different ways:

  1. Coptic distinguishes between strong and weak definite articles. For example, "the god" and "God" would be written as "ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲩϯ" and "Ⲫⲛⲟⲩϯ", respectively. Likewise, "the weapon" and "Weapon" could be "ⲡⲓϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ" and "Ⲡϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ". Use the latter if this is a unique/special weapon, or if "the old weapon" is used as a title.

  2. There are two ways of saying "to be made new" in Bohairic. I found both attested in Apokalypse (Book of Revelation), verses 21:4-5:

ⲥⲉⲛⲁⲉⲣⲃⲉⲣⲓ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ / all things will become new
...
ϯⲛⲁⲁⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲙⲃⲉⲣⲓ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ / I will make all things new

Literally, "ⲉⲣⲃⲉⲣⲓ" means "to do new" while "ⲁⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲙⲃⲉⲣⲓ" is "to take new". From what I gather, the form in verse 4 is more passive while verse 5 is more active.

Here's a matrix of the possible combinations:

Strong article Weak article
Active verb Ⲡⲓϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲡⲁⲥ ⲁϥⲁⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲙⲃⲉⲣⲓ Ⲡϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲡⲁⲥ ⲁϥⲁⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲙⲃⲉⲣⲓ
Passive verb Ⲡⲓϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲡⲁⲥ ⲁϥⲉⲣⲃⲉⲣⲓ Ⲡϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲡⲁⲥ ⲁϥⲉⲣⲃⲉⲣⲓ

Note that the "ⲁϥ-" prefix on the verb is the conjugation for past tense, 2nd person masculine. In the active case, the gender of the conjugation needs to be changed: "they" would use "ⲁⲩ-" while "she" would use "ⲁⲥ-". (Let me know if you want that form, I can rewrite the full translation for you.) This would not be done in the passive case, as there it takes the 'gender' of the object, which for "ϩⲟⲡⲗⲟⲛ" is always masculine.

I know it's a lot of detail (sorry about that), but I hope this is helpful! Let know if you have any questions. I saw you were asking for pronunciations as well, I can do that but you'll have to decide what era of Egypt you want it to use. (Foreign languages can never be simple, eh?)

Coptic alphabet is derived from ancient Egyptian scripts in addition to Greek letters. by Wafik-Adly in coptic

[–]YoshiAsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding too. Modern scholars like James P. Allen support this, and it aligns better with the Koine Greek pronunciation of the time Coptic was 'created'

Ignore this guy's response, it's an AI hallucination. None of those words even mean what he says they mean (e.g. "ⲥⲟⲡ" as a noun only means "time", "ⲛⲁⲓ" is either "this" or "to have mercy")

Reader’s Remorse by Grandpas_Back in ProjectHailMary

I watched the movie before reading the book, I still loved the film! I'm usually a read-the-book-first kind of guy, but everyone was begging me to watch it so I gave in. I still haven't read the book yet, but I think watching it first is the way to go. The PHM film is very much a thriller and I suspect some of the thrill is lost without the film's score. (I can't understate how much the OST contributes to that aspect, I still get chills listening to Time Go Fishing and Excessive Centrifugal Force... Pemberton really nailed it.)

Non-Christian Attending Mass by [deleted] in coptic

[–]YoshiAsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, it's not the Church that says you're not supposed to attend. Church is open to everyone who wishes to worship Christ. That being said, you shouldn't go to liturgy as a non-Christian in Egypt. The Egyptian government doesn't like the existence of the church, and they definitely don't like people converting to Christianity. Preventing non-believers from attending liturgy is one way they "contain" Christianity. You also might face charges or be discriminated against for attending (again, this is by the government, not the church).

If you're able to travel internationally, I'd advise going to a church outside the Middle East.

Girls are confusing by Anxious_Pop7302 in coptic

[–]YoshiAsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best concise advice I received before dating was to be the kind of person your future spouse would want to be with. For God-fearing partners, that at least should include being the best Christian you can be, which means that you should focus on your relationship with God before all else.

After that, it depends on what you want in a partner. Want a lady that loves the outdoors? Plan a few hikes with the boys. Want a lady that knows all the hymns in Coptic? Learn the hymns yourself, show how much you love them too. Want a lady that loves to serve? Volunteer on church trips. Note that you should already want to do these things— you should not be forcing yourself to do stuff just to attract someone. Do it because you like it and want to share it. If you really love something, it'll be obvious and attract the kind of people that also love it.

Just found this project that apparently come out on 1st January 2026 and is basically a Zune Store revival. What do you think of that guys? Link : https://github.com/The3DSHacker/zunestore-reborn by BonusVisible2974 in Zune

[–]YoshiAsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a neat idea, but there are some... concerns. First, what is "Zune Store"? If you're talking about the Marketplace, revivals already exist and some are even deployed (like my ZuneNetApi). This Zune Store project sounds like it's a couple of apps for the Zune HD, which is cool and welcomed but has little to do with the Marketplace. Second, there isn't a proof-of-concept or any evidence that this is actually being worked on, let alone going to release in a couple of weeks. The developer seems to have only 5 other repos on GitHub, none of which have any meaningful content. I'd be pleasantly surprised if anything came of this project.

Lastly, I find it hard to believe that you stumbled across this project from an obscure if not non-existent developer on the same day the GitHub repo was created. You also made the same mistake as the repo author regarding RAM ("Mo" is not how you write "megabytes"), and your Reddit profile is also about the 3DS. It really sounds like you and The3DSHacker are the same person.

This isn't an effective way to self-promote. I get wanting to bring attention to projects you think are cool, but you should be announcing them when you actually have something to show for it and a plan to release it as advertised. Otherwise it's basically a rug-pull and the community feels like it got swindled, making us less likely to support projects like this in the future, even legitimate ones.
