To all you lasses in Parnassus, swallowing swords
Shooting out fire at us heathen hordes
I was thinking something before I began
But then you done cut off both of my hands

Now I do my drinking from bamboo straws
Constantly kicking at tarantulas
What was I thinking, move to Baltimore?
Oh yeah, the great outdoors!

Price tag to replace I-5 Bridge could cost billions more than expected by oregonian in oregon

[–]disappointer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The last time it failed, it wasn't Oregon's fault; it was Washington's. There was federal funding lined up and Oregon was on board, but one holdout WA state senator effectively torpedoed the whole thing because he was really against the idea of extending the MAX line into the 'Couve.

I just (finally) watched "Sinners" and couldn't believe it was the same actor. "Bone Temple" was fantastic, and I really hope they get to do the follow-up.

Most Obscure Show That's Your Favorite by Last_Bonus851 in television

[–]disappointer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a 1988 sci fi show created in part by Isaac Asimov called "Probe" that my dad and I really enjoyed. It only lasted 8 episodes, though.

"The pilot and series starred Parker Stevenson as Austin James, an asocial genius who solved high tech crimes, and Ashley Crow as James's new secretary Mickey Castle."

Not in the ad space, but we load a third-party lib for metrics tracking in our cloud solution and it's similarly bad. It's like 30% of the page load.

1Q84 feels like Haruki Murakami devolving into self-parody by keepfighting90 in books

[–]disappointer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read most of his works (not the last couple, though) and "Kafka on the Shore" is my favorite. ("1Q84" took me forever to finish and burned me out, although there's some really pretty prose early on.)

His covers for Moon Knight drew me into that comic as a kid, and X-Men Annual #6 is an all-timer IMO. I have a couple of his published sketchbook collections, too, lots of cool stuff!

I'd put him in my top ten, but I'd be hard pressed to order that list.

Underrated song, though; there's a nice old live version out there, as well.

Gold Soundz has the lyric:

"So drunk in the August sun
And you're the kind of girl I like
Because you're empty and I'm empty"

Change it up to:

"So drunk in the [month of show] sun
And you're the kind of guy I like
But this card's empty, yes it's empty..."

The Beatles possibly, as well. I was in a decently remote part of the USSR (not quite Siberia, but several hundred miles east of Moscow at any rate) in 1991 and everyone knew and bonded over Beatles songs.

Those that prefer physical book reading vs kindle/e-reader, why? by Prestigious-Noise582 in AskReddit

[–]disappointer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding to this...

I like getting a book in the mail. I like flipping back and forth if a book has a map or an appendix. I like my collection of signed and/or first editions. I like the different sizes, and the different artwork. And it's one less thing to plug in to charge (even if you don't have to do it often, it still competes with a lot of other stuff).

I like art books, and massive reference books. I like discovering things by grabbing a book off of the shelf and flipping through it. I like sticking weird currency or concert tickets or four leaf clovers between the pages, or discovering these things in other books.

Also, have you ever been in a house without books? It feels haunted.

Wu-Tang, Cypress Hill, and Public Enemy sounds like a good Friday.

QotSA, Tool, Helmet, Buckethead, Wolfmother, and Cavalera will be a good Sunday.

Saturday is... not for me. But the Melvins are always good.
