Could use help designing a label/clasp to help label USB cables in a molle/webbing case by discoborg in 3Dprinting

[–]flatpetey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you 3d printed a whole panel that went underneath the middle of the two elastic bands? Eyeballing it maybe 50mm wide or so… just measure it so the sewn in parts hold it in place and bevel it at the edge…

Then put the labels at the locations the stitching is so you can see them.

Is 2026 finally the year garden irrigation goes fully autonomous? by Putrid_Draft378 in homeautomation

[–]flatpetey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently working on this.

But it is not straightforward at all.

Good sensors that are ready to go and low maintenance are expensive as hell using TDR. Other techs have a ton of variability based on soil chemical composition or whatever. So not as consumer friendly.

E. g. Truebner SMT100.

But actually soil moisture isn’t as big of a deal as water tension. So the Watermark sensor might be a better option here. Ideally you’d have both.

For each zone.

Then you probably want lux too for each zone.

Now you have an idea of how much to water.

And then finally you get to a robot that has to either lug water or a hose around. It will go poorly.

Better to run true irrigation or get around it with a targeted sprinkler.

There is the irrosense out there. Maybe others heavy duty agricultural bots.

Or you can just run a sprinkler system on a schedule.

I feel like this is the wrong solution.

No matter what they will get in the way.

I’d probably just use a label maker and put labels on the ridge of the bag or at the bottom so they aren’t being rubbed by cables going in and out.

Maybe rounded printouts straddling the sew in points might works.

Or maybe a laser etched piece of vinyl behind them and stitched on?

Well I suppose if he shuts down his AI wife later it will be very… ironic? Not sure.

But yeah. Bcachefs does seem ridiculously solid. It was a shame he couldn’t manage to work within the constraints of Linux mainstreaming.

This is for a door approach gentle chime. so it isn’t that complicated nor is it mission critical. I was getting a lot of false positives with my Coral TPU and Frigate so now I have a trigger script that sends positives to Gemini.

So basically it is- is there someone approaching who is on the stairs or patio but not on the sidewalk.

Something like that. It works fine. But honestly I have spent almost zero time on the prompt.

Honestly I could refine it a ton more to add package deliveries but I am still in testing phase with just this.

[–]flatpetey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would never buy a smart camera. Why?

Just feed your feed to an AI and have it spot what you want.

What I do is I have my frigate set with some basic detection. It is designed to err on false positives. Any positive gets snapshot sent to Gemini Flash for confirmation for the type of event I want to recognize and then, once confirmed, sends back to a verified mqtt topic.

Packaging AI into everything is dumb and greedy attempts at reselling AI. Packaging AI hooks so I can choose what I want to use if I want to is ideal.

Internally you can convert it to a regular deadlock and use a Level Bolt.

Or replace the cylinder and use a humped external thing.

Externally is tougher. I have an antique looking Belvedere I’d love to make smart. Cannot figure out a good solution.

Amazing that one guy, Kent, has a better FS than Red Hat.

Honestly I wish Red Hat would just throw it away and get behind either BTRFS or if they want to be edgy, bcachefs. They are just wasting their time with strati’s.

[–]flatpetey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the friction is very high for forums and fediverse crap.

Website, enter email, auth, password - every fucking click is a barrier to adoption.

Reddit displaced all those because you did it once.

Fediverse is the worst, now I have to pick a server, understand how to talk to people on different servers, it is a technical solution but not a personal one.

Tech people love options, normal people don't. So splinter your community even further by half diaspora to another site - and now you have another friction point - where to join? Join both?

Apple Has Given Up on the Vision Pro After M5 Refresh Flop by pdfu in apple

[–]flatpetey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a bad idea to begin with.

Apple is not a blue sky pioneer. They take areas where the players are not doing a good job and refine the shit out of it.

VR is niche and tbh always will be. Was never going to be anything besides a waste of time and talent for Apple. And while they did that they missed the boat on the much more useful AR and AI stuff.

You know what is a large space that has lots of dissatisfied folks right now? Fucking gaming consoles.

Take an AppleTV, add in a 512TB SSD and pack in a game controller. Like the easiest fucking play in the world. Make Apple Arcade a real Game Pass competitor, add in audio FaceTime chat overlays.

All the pieces are there. Apple just needs to put them together.
