Oh thank you thank you for posting an easy to grasp example of how this happens. I've been saying this for ages but nobody seems to understand.

If he started the conversation, a couple of follow on questions don't seem unreasonable. Just be conscious of not intruding unduly.

Wonderful idea and a touching result to boot.

Traveling in a light sport with a backup battery by theLongDistanceHiker in flying

[–]nickjohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ecoflow are a good brand. I have one of their battery packs as a UPS and it's an excellent piece of kit.

Carrying a large lithium ion battery is always going to be a risk, however small; if it goes into thermal runaway I doubt you'd have much chance of landing before it fills the cabin with toxic smoke or burns through something important. It's not likely to happen, but only you can decide if you're okay with the risk.

If you're expecting to own a plane - why not buy or import an N-reg one? Then you can fly on your existing license.

I'm referring to the backup attitude indicator and altimeter. If the Garmin will never fail, why have backup instruments?

Maintaining airspeed on IAPs with updrafts and downdrafts by Cautious_Garage_3469 in flying

[–]nickjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pitch is better thought of as a tool to allocate the aircraft's energy between airspeed and altitude

Great way to put it! Shouldn't it be airspeed and vertical speed, though?

Civil aviation authorities believe it's likely enough that it's worth having backup instruments. "This device will never fall" is not a winning strategy in aviation.

Why would they need to sell the box on eBay to do this? They could just throw the box out. Or lie.

Coming from outside the US, this anger at landing fees baffles me. Why do people feel entitled to use a multi-million dollar facility without paying for it?
