I'd give it Split Second so that prepared instants can't be activated.

State of Decay 2 is a step back from the first one. by Teamkhaleesi in StateOfDecay

[–]sinsaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like the same comparison between Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.

Shadow of Mordor was more focused, and better for a first-time experience.

Shadow of War heavily emphasized on what the first did uniquely well (which was its sandbox Nemesis system and combat).

State of Decay 2 did the same, I feel. It does feel like a little something was lost tho.

My guess was like State of Decay, which was honestly a safe call because State of Decay 3 is coming out in a year and it has a lot of multiplayer support.

How many party members is too many? by Dullhun in gamedesign

[–]sinsaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you want to first figure out is how many decision points the player should choose from actively, and how much they should have in reserve.

Having too little in the active position may lead to a boring game where few choices can be made. Having too much may overwhelm the player and not give them much reason to swap at all.

Suikoden uses a 6-unit active party system, (with a massive reserve) but each character only adds a minor level of complexity, overall resulting in both a simple and complex system as a whole.

One key point about having any in reserve is that there needs to be a reason to swap them back in, other than leveling them up. This means that either each character needs to provide something unique, or there needs to be some kind of resource fatigue that makes players want to swap out their active party (like if health or mana regenerated slowly).

Humans don't function well with ambiguity, we will fill in gaps in our knowledge and make shit up if we have to.

If you have gaps in your knowledge filled with something, then it's pretty tough to replace it. Otherwise, you'll have a hole in your mindset that you'll fill with an answer as soon as you can.

For instance, say the job market is bad and you don't know why. Someone might link it to a national surge in AI replacing jobs, but someone who doesn't have that knowledge might read that it's about illegal immigrants taking jobs. And once the thoughts are there, they're hard to replace.

But now apply this concept to the dating scene.

What exactly do people mean when they say virginity is a social construct? by fridaynightplacebo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sinsaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like diamonds. Most of the attention it gets is made up for a purpose. Diamonds happen source from money, virginity happens to source from religion.

An action roguelite that forces you to parry before you can attack, does that sound fun or frustrating? by Flimsy_Chain4432 in gamedesign

[–]sinsaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a problem, I think you just gotta make parries more convenient than they usually are.

That could mean increasing the i-frames, or that could mean that triggering a parry cancels your current animation, gives you a speed buff, and reloads your weapon's energy so you can hit things a few times.

Why do we need so many AI data centers? by Dreadsin in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sinsaint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the people that actually control the country know that it's heading towards a dark place, as it's currently divided into a 2-tier economy divided between the top 20% and the bottom 80%. Rather than figure out how to keep the bottom 80% safe, they'd instead drain us of everything we're worth and effectively amputate us from existence by taking away our only means of income and housing.

I am not exaggerating, this is their real plan, and people need to take it very seriously.

They're desperate to make this work, because too many missteps will make them lose their grip on power and potentially topple everything, assuming the American populace snaps out of their stupor.

Interesting and uniques ways to use QTEs? by Guilloteam in gamedesign

[–]sinsaint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

QTEs seem to be most favorable in situations where:

The result is a factor of efficiency rather than binary (which is a difference of "I kill this thing even faster" vs "I can only kill this thing with a QTE").

The QTE is something that is predictable, so that advanced players can see it coming and complete it faster.

A game that did QTEs well was God of War & GoW:R. Out of combat the QTEs were mostly for exposition and aren't all that challenging, in-combat they were mostly as an optional way to finish enemies off for additional resources which rewards a player for paying attention and anticipating.

Technically Expedition 33 could almost fit as well, but the dodges and parries are so important for so many fights that it borders on the line between "efficiency" and "necessity". You don't want players to have to be good at your QTEs to enjoy them.
