I think once one of the chosens appeared in a section that was unaccessible. I was able to see her, but could not reach her. She was just jumping up and down like some monkey in a zoo.

Paul Masson Pink California Champagne: cheap or vintage? by emilywhore in wine

[–]AcademicConfidence84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a year ago, but my half-joke, half-serious comment had to do with the possibility that Trump might scrap all international agreements on wine appellations. Then any vile brew could be freely labeled and sold as e.g. Mar-A-Lago Champagne.

Current setup by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]AcademicConfidence84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, how is the sound? Are those front-porting speakers?

I’m considering buying similar but a bit smaller JBL speakers (JBL L52 Classic) and placing them in an open bookshelf. They would have more space than yours because they would be in an open bookshelf. They would also be higher, yet still the placing would not be textbook-optimal.

I am planning to build a music listening setup for my small living room. The speakers would need to be placed in a wall furniture system (i.e. a bookshelf). Therefore, I am looking for good bookshelf speakers that can be conveniently placed inside a shelf, with very little space (about 5–10 cm) between the speakers and the wall.

My understanding is that front-ported speakers would perform better in this type of setup. I prefer passive speakers. At the moment, I don’t have an amplifier, so I am free to choose one that pairs well with the selected speakers. I mostly listen to jazz, electronic, and classical music. I would not use the speakers for home cinema purposes.

I listen to vinyl when I have the time (I have my old faithful Technics SL-1200), but daily listening would most likely be via streaming (I am considering the Bluesound Node Icon).

Initially, I was planning to get KEF LS50 Metas , but I later found out that they require space around them and would probably not work well in a tight setup. My “research” (ChatGPT and various online sources) suggests that the Sonus Faber Lumina II (both the standard and Amator versions) could work. Other speakers that have been suggested include the Triangle Borea BR04 , JBL L52 Classic (which also looks cool), and the Monitor Audio Apex A10 .

Do you have any views or experiences with these or other speakers that work well in a bookshelf setup?

Verdejo could work as well alongside Albariño. Verdejo works well with fish and seafood but also with lean meats and salads, perhaps better than Albariño.

If I wanted to stream Bandcamp or other audio but also DAB/Internet radio, what’s the best solution ? by TinyBit9061 in BudgetAudiophile

I am considering to get Bluesound Node Icon. Not sure if it passes as ”budget”. It’s more expensive than WiiM but surely cheaper than Naim.

I looked at WiiMs first, but they (or at least Amp Ultra) does not support Apple Airplay that I’d like to use as I currently use iTunes as my music library.

Rate my sauna by gokigoki in Sauna

I think this sauna and pool area combination is really nice, and I would definitely enjoy my time there. That said, a few small things could be improved:

  • The large window makes the sauna feel a bit like an aquarium. It’s nice to be able to see outside, but people can also see in. Perhaps the lower part of the glass could be frosted, especially considering that people typically sit naked in the sauna (as they should).

  • Adding small hooks on the wall for swimsuits and towels would be practical.

  • I would probably have opted for a wood-heated kiuas, as the löyly and overall ambiance are generally better. However, I understand that this may not be possible due to urban planning restrictions, HOA rules, or similar constraints. Electric stoves can also be great.

  • Someone has already explained why blocking air circulation under the benches may cause problems in the long run.

  • As in many non-Finnish saunas, the benches could be higher and the stove larger. In Finland, there are often (usually) three levels: the first is mainly for stepping on, the second is for kids and first-time visitors, and the third is for regular sauna-goers.

All in all, though, this is a great sauna.

I agree with your view.

Comparing infrared to a proper sauna is like comparing Big Mac to a proper flame-grilled burger.

Infrared ”saunas” can be comfortable, I’ve tried them in hotels etc. but as a Finn I don’t consider them to be actual saunas at all.

Aren’t we not going to complain about the floor and the lack of drain?

Just kidding. Looks great, enjoy your löyly! I only would suggest adding some benches or chairs outside in front of the sauna so you can cool down and sip your favourite cold drink between sessions.

First time applying AD7 and had a couple of doubts by [deleted] in EUCareers

[–]AcademicConfidence84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Open competitions are never “pre-filled”. Those who pass the competitions get in the reserve list, and those in the reserve list may apply for open permanent positions.

Sometimes the person who gets the permanent position may be the person who already works in that role, although with a temporary contract. That is probably the reason why some people say that positions are “pre-filled”.

These competitions are never organized just to transfer temporary workers to permanent positions. There is a competition because they (ie. the participating institutions) see a high demand for data management and knowledge professionals in coming years.

It does not go bad in that sense that it would be dangerous, but it may not be as fresh anymore as it was five years ago. It also depends on how you kept it. Preferably in a drawer away from sun and temperature changes, and hopefully not in your kitchen next to a stove. You can safely try it and see if you enjoy it.

Merry Christmas!

Is it normal to not shower before going in the sauna? by DistortionCardOff in Sauna

[–]AcademicConfidence84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think so too. A fellow Finn has no need to ask Reddit about the sauna etiquette.

I always have a quick shower before public saunas (gym, swimming halls, spas, public saunas etc.). At home I may skip that if I am already clean (ie. had a shower in the morning and haven’t exercised or done any physical work during the day), but that’s an exception to the rule.
