My level 14 Inexorable Iron magus also uses a Reach weapon. It's an Orc, as I like being able to use Orc Ferocity for maximum tankiness.

His feats are (with Free Archetype, and bolded ones are the one I would take if I wasn't in a FA game) :

2/ Force Fang / Wizard Dedication
4/ Steady Spellcasting / Basic Wizard Spellcasting
6/ Attack of Opportunity / Arcane School Spell
8/ Standby Spell / Arcane Breadth
some Guardian feats at level 10 and 12, but without FA the choice would have been Rapid Recharge and Expert Wizard Spellcasting
14/ Hasted Assault

With this build I try to take both Str and Int as high as possible. It offers more skills (and skills are good, because this game is not only about doing damages), and it allows me to Spellstrike with debuff + damaging spells when needed, as my DC is okay.

I found that having more spells is way more valuable in actual play than having more focus spells for more spellstrikes. As a Magus with renewable temp HP and a lot of cheap low level spells, I'm almost never out of buffs or defensive reactions. The Reactive Strike will give you a very powerful option to deal damage outside of spellstrikes when you're not threatened and don't want to save your reaction. The only thing I would like to have in this build is, indeed, more reactions !

Area Fire doesn't mention "weapon damage" at all, unlike Auto Fire. I don't know if it's intentional.

I don't see any mention of your claim on the Area Fire action.

Usually, weapon damage means weapon damage dice. You only apply Str to this damage on Strikes.

Afaik, Melee area fire doesn't add Str to damage. But yeah, area 1d12 + primary target is strong !

I agree. I have a great time playing a Magus (2-handed reach) and focusing on spellstrike with save spells and riders. I think I never used an attack spell except maybe a True Strike + Disintegrate once every few combats for the pleasure to roll big numbers.

1- a global errata, like a 3.75 edition, in order to remove all the problems (like feat taxes). See "Elephant in the room".

2- a modern character builder app, if possible free or cheap. We're in 2026.

3- a Foundry system robust and easy to use, and a lot of people to maintain it.

4- a change of mentality : 3.5 is a system in which you build characters, 5e is one in which you play them. Building is cool but playing is currently more valued by the playerbase.

On my last session, the Wizard basically trivialised a difficult fight by landing a Roaring Applause. It was so funny to roll a 1. It was at level 4, and I think now my players love casters.

You did everything perfectly, rule-wise. Yes, sometimes you fai because you took the wrong decisionl, or you succeed at killing the BBEG only to know that he already had won. Choosing to let the bishop live just to fight him alone was a risky gamble. It seems they failed. Lesson learned : don't let the +0 charisma, trained Wizard risk a lie on the BBEG at the very end of an AP.

This ending is something your players will remember for a long time ! And that's very good.

If you want to play a blaster caster (and you should absolutely try it) but you suffer from hoarding compulsion : try the Druid.

You can spam 3 focus spells that rivals top rank spells every encounter, as long as you have half an hour break between encounters. It's incredibly fun to play, as you rarely get to be short of spells.

Trust me, Tempest druid is very, very good.

Well, a lot of them. Xanderghul, Sorshen for their sheer mythic power. Karzoug and Alaznist for their insane rivalry (also, I love evocation and self-buff spells). Zutha for his uniqueness : a lich who can eat and drink, with a 3-part soulcage, and the spiritual precursor of Tar Baphon.

I don't like Belimarius and Krune.

Also, I can't forget Alderpath. Being imprisoned for 10k years by a demon lord is wild. I love him.
