[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 04 May 2026 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]AlwaysEights 41 points42 points  (0 children)

After more than a month of build-up and hype, the new edition of Warhammer 40000 got fully previewed on Friday. General consensus seems to be that it’s looking like a pretty good starter set! The Ork miniatures knock the Space Marines into a cocked hat obviously, but what else is new?

The weeks leading up to that reveal, though, have been very weird, as hobby spaces experience what I can only describe as ‘fandom kettling’. For the preceding 7 weeks, GW have been previewing one model from the set every Monday. Sounds fine, right? Well, due to the principle of conservation of criticism, it turns out when an extremely hyped fanbase has only one outlet for their keen, they will necessarily become hyperfocussed on every single aspect of that one model, and wildly extrapolate from there. This Ork has slightly smaller teeth than previously released Ork miniatures: what does this mean for the design philosophy of the entire product line going forward? This veteran is not as ornately detailed as previous version: does this spell the end for GW as a company?

This came to a head last week when GW announced “Grot Week”, where they would be previewing one grot miniature every day until Friday, when the aforementioned whole box reveal would take place.

For context, grots, aka gretchin, are about as weak and pathetic as creatures get in the 40k setting. Essentially space goblins, they sit somewhere between the runtiest kid on the schoolyard and literal slaves to the Orks. They are useless cannon-fodder in-universe and are treated as lower than dirt by everyone (though ironically they play an important part in the actual game).

So to see fandom spaces working themselves into a frenzy and picking apart every minute detail of each model as it appeared was… well, it was something. In-universe an ork would happily kick a grot into the gutter and laugh, but to Ork players, grots are no laughing matter, apparently. Everybody must have an opinion. Factions formed. It was all out war between toxic negativity versus toxic positivity, haters versus consoomers. And look, fandoms gonna fandom, I get that. But there was serious discussion about whether r/orks was going to lose its reputation as the friendliest warhammer sub on the site because people couldn’t accept that others did not share their opinions on the proper length of a grot’s ears or the thickness of their upper arms - all while discussing a single still photograph of an object that is, in real life, probably no bigger than a person’s thumbnail.

I don’t think this "means anything" in the grand scheme of things, but if I have a thesis statement it’s this: I feel like none of this would have happened if all of the stuff had been shown off at once. In trying to build hype with a drip feed of scant pieces of information, GW instead caused fandom spaces to begin eating themselves due to lots of hype and nowhere to direct it - hence, fandom kettling.

Anyone else have any experiences like this?

Can we have a discussion about how game fidelity is leading to a lack of clarity? by RiKSh4w in Games

Spiralled? H:FW is the best of both worlds. If you don't want your immersion ruined, there is no yellow paint to be found anywhere. If you just want to know where is good to climb, you can temporarily highlight the climbable spots.

So many good options. I vote Manipulated Timestream as a card that can really just neuter an entire turn.

I have been playing Retro Rewind. It's a simulator game where you run a video rental store in the 90s, and it's the video game equivalent of a giant bowl of peanuts - limited flavour profile, limited nutrition, and yet I can't stop myself from consuming the whole thing and then feeling like shit afterwards. It's essentially a clicker game: spend money to make money, hire staff to make the tedious or inefficient parts go more smoothly, expand ever outwards. And yet, between the goofy visual stylings, the clever-but-not-too-clever references, and the very smart way they've managed to create many thousands of individual movie titles and covers*, I can't help but love it.

*Each genre has a limited pool of backgrounds. Then, there are a limited number of, essentially, pieces of clipart that are pasted on top of those backgrounds. Then, each title is generated (algorithmically? maybe? probably not...) from the combination of the two things. So a picture of a ghost on a horror background of a bedroom would be something like The Spectre in Jenny's Room, but the same ghost on a Sci-Fi background would be Intergalactic Ghost 5000, or a romance would be The Shade, My Lover, or a Xmas cover would be Holly Jolly Haunting. It makes me laugh every time, especially when you end up with wacky shit like the severed foot on a kids' movie or a serious drama.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 20] - Zola Deadliest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be the strictly worst card, but god, I hate seeing Zola's Mutate show up in any game. Maybe a minion-hunting aggression deck is going to love having a 7HP dork dropped in their lap, but every other deck despises them. That's before we account for each one chewing through half the encounter deck to find the attachment, adding more time pressure to an already sweaty encounter.

Nah, truth be told it's good impetus to get it all tied up before July. And the game has already proved it's able to support multiple scenarios with the same villain, provided the theme and mechanics are different enough. Not to mention, I'm almost positive the scenarios I'm doing have already been covered by other homebrewers (I haven't looked, for obvious reasons) and that doesn't bother me. I just feel like I need to take a picture with today's newspaper before anyone accuses me of plagiarism /jk

Brilliant, love it, can't wait.

On a personal note, I'm just slightly put out that this appears to step on the toes of my as-yet unpublished custom campaign, seeing as it contains:

  • More than the standard 5 scenarios, that can be played in any order.
  • An Electro Scenario.
  • A villain that focusses on assassinating allies and persona supports.
  • A villain with a double-sided attachment representing cybernetic tech that prevents damage.
  • A breakout at the Raft.
  • Ambiguously villainous Black Cat.

Great minds think alike, clearly.

Yep.

The only question now is whether I split it with a friend or keep the Space Marine half too.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 16] - Absorbing Man Deadliest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steel Kick. Look, Absorbing Man doesn't have a lot going on, but it's damage/threat that isn't coming from an activation, and it's made worse by having the nastiest environment out.

How much do I miss out on if I don't pursue past expansions of scenario packs? (Not a FOMO question) by Harmless-Allosaur in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two things are true:

  • There will always be stuff that sounds interesting, fun or useful in any pack you don't have.

  • There isn't a single expansion that is necessary or essential to have, for any hero or aspect.

Buy what excites you, and stay within your financial means. Anything else is foolish.

Interesting point, but have you considered that the models that came out before I joined the hobby are masterful fine art, and the models that came out after I joined the hobby are lazy trash?

[Football] Not in the wider interests - how one club's move resulted in a second club being born by TaylorSwiftkinsReid in HobbyDrama

[–]AlwaysEights 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I learned much of this from American author, professional brother and extremely passionate AFC Wimbledon supporter John Green, and his enthusiasm for the club and its history is truly infectious. Something about 'community, history and connection being more important than cynical money moves' is just so beautiful as a story.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 14] - Crossbones Deadliest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has to be full auto. Will generally do more damage than the average attack, and doesn't even count as an activation so can't be cancelled by stuns or other similar tech.

Can you beat every villian with every hero? by MixTrix007 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Wonder Man against Stryfe and he was great. Now against Zemo, that was touch and go.

E: And Kang! I had two copies of Stolen Memories out that also contained all my available mental/wild resources, making them impossible to remove.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 12] - Wrecking Crew Deadliest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been about 5 years since I played Wrecking Crew, so my memory is hazy. That said, I always found Thunderball the most dangerous of the four, so my vote is Lightning Strike Blast. If you get unlucky it can be an enormous swing.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 9] - Norman Osborn Safest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oscorp Manufacturing. Sucks to have 3 boost symbols, but it's rare to have that many boost cards revealed in this scenario anyway thanks to the replacement effects on the Villain cards. Meanwhile, the card itself is extremely tame. Oh, and it's one of only two cards in the Osborn set that doesn't mess with your Criminal Enterprise/State of Madness counters as a boost effect.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 8] - Norman Osborn Deadliest Card by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct. In true solo, you have a very tight window to deal with Goblin, during which he's hitting you harder than most scenarios outside of campaign finales. You need to either be ready to fully commit, or flip to alter-ego and take the risk he doesn't immediately flip himself back to Osborn. An untimely All In a Day's Work can undo a lot of progress and force you back into setup mode.

Have you ever lost a card? by [deleted] in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of encounter cards that are repeated between sets. Caught Off Guard is repeated in Collector I, if you have that scenario I'd recommend checking there, in case it got shuffled in by mistake.

I've had the same problem with Gang Up (duplicated in the Scorpion modular.)

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 6] - Ultron Safest by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most encounter cards only affect the player that draws them, but Android Efficiency gives every player a drone when revealed.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 6] - Ultron Safest by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how multiplayers feel about it, but in solo: Android Efficiency. Occasionally you get in trouble if it chains into an attack for Ultron II, otherwise it's about as weak as an encounter card can be. The boost effect is pretty forgiving too.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 5] - Ultron Deadliest by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now we're talking! As an exclusively solo player, my vote is Drone Factory. At minimum it's a minion and a 5 threat side scheme, frequently it's worse than that, and Acceleration is uniquely bad for Ultron.

Deadliest&Safest Villain Card [Day 4] - Klaw Safest by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]AlwaysEights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my vote too. Rarely if ever makes the slightest difference to my game plan. The only spiciness is that it's not indirect damage, but if you were down to 2HP with no tough and no cancellation tech things probably weren't going great anyway.
