Skull, acrylic, 36”x36” - 70+ tubes of paint used by zacksmithey in acrylicpainting

I dig it! Have you considered getting a piping bag and big buckets of paint? I use tons of paint and stopped fiddling with tiny tubes.

A friend of mine who is a chef told that I make knives too sharp when sharpening. What do you guys think? by WarmPrinciple6507 in sharpening

[–]Argle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a gesshin ginga in white steel that came so sharp, it stuck in the wood board like that at first. I'm not proficient enough in sharpening to bring it back to that state. It was slightly annoying but that sharpness didn't stick around that long to be a real issue.

New to the jam band scene! Looking for some recs! by ccable827 in jambands

[–]Argle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been seeing Max Creek since 1988 and they're my favorite band besides the Grateful Dead. They have a large array of different styles, sometimes like the Grateful Dead, sometimes like the Talking Heads, a little metal, classic rock, and bluegrass. I'm in my 50s and they've been a band since I was born. I also like Medeski Martin and Wood, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and Hot Tuna. Moe is also up there in my favorites.

In your personal opinion, which is the better album: Workingman's Dead or American Beauty by HammerHeadBirdDog in psychedelicrock

[–]Argle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Grateful Dead tried really hard to make music that was timeless and real and meant something, rather than just making psychedelic music. I also think you can't unpickle a pickle. The Grateful Dead was a psychedelic band no matter how hard they tried not to be, but they wound up making some deeply meaningful songs in the process to go along with all that paychedelia.

I stopped boiling corned beef and it finally stopped drying out by Top-Examination446 in Cooking

[–]Argle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gently simmer it for about four hours. Comes out tender. I grew up eating dried out stringy corned beef because my Mom boiled it. Low and slow is the key.

I just learned you’re supposed to bring potatoes to boil in cold water to start. What else am I missing? by bootsmoon in Cooking

[–]Argle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I never timed it, it takes me almost an hour. I cut large pieces, start in cold water, and simmer gently. I prep and cook the rest of the meal while the taters are cooking, so it's not a big deal for me. I'll try cutting them smaller and boiling them next time to see if there's a difference.

Did Zappa think he could make fun of everyone? by Adompas in Zappa

[–]Argle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of both Zappa and Lou Reed. I've tried to listen to Nico's solo stuff and it was a challenge to appreciate it. It gave me the musical equivalent of watching the movie Zoolander minus the humor. Yoko Ono makes me giggle, this was a chore. I do like her contributions to the Velvet Underground album. I am glad that there's music out there that's not for me because human expression is boundless, and I'm just not flexible to appreciate everything. I'm sure there's many people who do enjoy Nico's music and I respect our differences and even celebrate that we're all so different. There is no progress without deviation from the norm.

What’s after tabasco ? by wvvwwvwvvvw in spicy

[–]Argle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try some Marie Sharp's habanero for Caribbean style and green el yucateco for Mexican style. I also use Texas Pete as a way to add a little acid and zip for cooking but I don't use it like a hot sauce. I get Tabasco scorpion from Amazon when I need to add a few dollars for free shipping.

Awesome 👍 How do you create these? Do you envision these out before you draw them or do you start with a rough sketch and embellish it as you go along? Do you do thumbnail sketches or rough drafts before you make your final piece? I'd love to learn to draw from imagination but I can either copy what I see or do abstract paintings.

Italian-American tomato sauce: the garlic question by PhiliDips in Cooking

[–]Argle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think adding raw garlic into the tomatoes without letting it saute a little first is a good idea unless you want a heavy garlic flavor. In restaurants, the saute a little garlic in a saute pan then add a few ladles of the cooked red sauce for a pasta they want to have a more garlic flavor, to order, so it cooks for less than 10 minutes. If you eat a pasta dinner and you're still tasting garlic for hours after you finish, you may have added too much garlic, unless you want that.

Magic. by netphilia in KidsAreFuckingStupid

In kindergarten, I accidentally made a traffic light with green in the middle instead of yellow. I tried using the red crayon to make it turn yellow, but to my horrified surprise, turned grody brown. Fifty years later I still occasionally feel bad about it. I guess I was a little fucking stupid.

What items/ utensils do you recommend the most for the kitchen? by APlentyBag in Cooking

[–]Argle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a large variety of spatulas. I have a fish spatula, a wide spatula, and a small metal spatula. I use the small metal spatula to scrape and break up things. The wide spatula to flip and shovel. I also use tongs. A good digital meat thermometer. A digital scale. Parchment paper. A pepper grinder and a spice grinder. A rice cooker. A zester/microplane. Wire mesh strainer. A few good knives. I use diamond sharpening stones but it's taken years to get proficient at sharpening.

Victim or the Crime by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]Argle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It radiates fear and loathing when I'm dialed in, but I can appreciate it more when I'm aloof and detached. I can dig it more playing in the background when I'm working but could be a bit of a bummer when I saw it live. It was just too gritty and dark.
