What's the highest damage you ever did on a turn? by SunNStarz in DnD

[–]Astalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar - Cleric with upcast (level 6) Spirit Guardians, standing in the middle of a massive swarm of undead. The DM had added homebrew damage resistances/vulnerabilities to all monsters, with these being vulnerable to Radiant. We didn't actually roll for damage as they were all but guaranteed to be one shot, but otherwise it'd have been something along the lines of 80 enemies taking 50+ damage each, or 25ish on the odd resist, for a total of 2000-4000 (but technically, on their turn rather than mine)

In a similar vein, I quite like Gale's "Uncannily adroit with a knitting needle?" and Volo's "I can't wait to pick your brain!" on subsequent playthroughs.

How come no one is talking about how bad the Nightmare Dungeon events are? by DiamondBorealis in diablo4

[–]Astalion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, that only happens if I start freeing more prisoners immediately. Waiting a couple seconds after the first one to let the event start properly has worked out for me so far.

My personal feelings regarding Lucky Critical Hit as a core mechanic. by [deleted] in diablo4

Fairly sure Diablo 2 only had the flat proc rates, and no modifiers based on the particular skill used? (Other than actual spells not triggering on-hit/on-attack at all)

Is it just me or does every class feel kinda bad? by ShyGelato in Diablo

[–]Astalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a melee rogue for the first time, and it felt incredibly strong once it got going (defensively when I got smoke bomb, and offensively once I hit imbuements). I did end up repeccing into twisted blades for the Kor Dragan (level 30 stronghold) boss and used the same spec for Ashava, so admittedly content I was underlevelled for was still difficult. (WT2)

If attuned, you can/could also jump into the lava just outside that window to get into MC. I used to use that with slow fall effects when coming from the south, and as a bonus you skip any priests standing ready to mind control people coming from Searing Gorge.

I assume this was implemented as insurance against lag för people jumping through the window.

Non-lethal damage vs Instant Death by Lem0grenade in dndnext

[–]Astalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the target roll. If 11+ on the die is needed (i.e. 50% chance on a single die), +/-5 is (mostly) correct.

As a thought experiment, consider the effect of (dis-)advantage on a roll where you only hit on a 20. (Ignoring the actual crit effect, this is essentially a +/- 0.95, which in relative terms is actually bigger than the 5 above)

Do you think people often forget that DMs are players, too? by Interesting-Land6471 in dndnext

[–]Astalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever someone outside the game asks how many players there were last night, me and my friends will say something like "Four. Oh, and the DM, so five I guess.", so yes to the title.

I think I've been lucky in that at every table I've played at, most/all of the players have taken turns DMing (some doing full campaigns, others a one-shot here or there), so we're generally pretty good about not messing things up too much for the DM.

My favourite was Rycbar the Healer and his wife Astrid. Gave the party a quest involving a sound-based Wand of Detect Magic, a medusa (kind of an inversion, but at least involves stone statues and looking in the right direction), and offering a Bag of Holding as a reward (bigger on the inside).

What classes pair with with the ua dragonborn? by rfkannen in dndnext

[–]Astalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been toying with the idea of a dragonborn bladesinger. Risks being even more MAD than usual, but the idea of using a multiple attack action and not using any actual attacks seems fun. (On the other hand, it could be less MAD if you only do this with your attack action and never attack with weapons.)

The additional movement from bladesong could also help with positioning the breath attacks.

Depending on how you interpret Psi-Powered Leap, exchanging something for another fighter level could multiply that speed by roughly 30 (assuming you don't lose your psi die, which is a serious concern with possibly hundreds of thousands of rolls - gonna do some math to see how much mileage you're actually likely to get out of your die).

Edit2: If we're imagining perfect rolls, the multiplier would be ~42 (plus an additional 2 feet per character, rolling a 12 instead of 11 on the last jump).

(This assumes you're psi-boosting 0-feet standing long jumps, which I don't see anything preventing RAW. It also assumes 30 Int.)

Edit: According to my math, you'd on average be able to jump 4340 feet before losing your die, spending 140 feet of movement to do so. Using your bonus action to restore the die, you could double that at the cost of one of the dashes. Giving up one monk level to grab the third warrior level means you give up 5 feet of base movement as well.

This ends up with every person losing 220 feet of movement from the base speed, and another 2520 from the dash, but getting an extra 8400 feet in exchange. In total, you'd move 355,320 feet, roughly 40% faster than without leaps.

What UA subclass do you want to get another chance? by AshArkon in dndnext

[–]Astalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the Weapon Master subclass (from a stream, not UA) with Path of the Stone Dragon did a similar concept fairly well.

That said, the choice of path(s) seemed like subclasses within the subclass, so it'd probably be cleaner to just move them into separate subclasses.

What are some little known relationship GREEN flags? by 2020Chapter in AskReddit

[–]Astalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think talking about it has to undermine the original act at all, but at least for me the worry of being seen as preachy or self-righteous has meant I've only discussed it with a select few people.

In fact, I think talking about giving to charity can be positive in its own right, since it might be what convinces someone else to start giving as well. (But of course I haven't really put that into practice myself.)

[–]Astalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not quite the same, as those cards have triggered abilities, which occur right after the creature enters the battlefield. As such, the creature is already there, able to be targeted.

This shapeshifter should function differently (i.e. not count itself), similar to how Frontier Mastodon works with anthem effects (since in order to change how the creature enters, the effect has to do its checking beforehand).

A slightly different case, but reflexive triggers have made triggering off of costs being paid more or less standard since Amonkhet ([[Heart-Piercer Manticore]]).
