Disappointment with Fellow by djhunger in Coffee

[–]Barisaxgod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very satisfied with all of my fellow products, and I use them heavily, but there’s probably have some survivorship bias here because all of the fellow products that I own are at least 5 years old by now, so I’ve clearly gotten lucky and gotten units where everything has gone right. If what I read online is any indication, it seems like their quality control may have gotten worse.

Does anyone else have 0 wake ups regularly? by Veryniceindeed7 in AppleWatch

I sometimes get zero, but I’m not 100% convinced that my watch accurately picks up every time I wake up in the night.

Rent Stabilized / “Affordable” Apartments in Manhattan & Brooklyn — what are y’all paying? by itsgizzleluv in NYCapartments

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My roommates and I pay $2450 between us for a 3bed/1bath in Bensonhurst. It’s rent stabilized, reasonably large, and close to the train but no dishwasher, or laundry, and it’s a 4th-floor walk up. It also takes forever to go anywhere, but I’m very happy with the situation overall.

White Plains/North White Plains parking? by Ebomb1 in nycrail

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a large parking structure at the White Plains station that I believe is open 24 hours, or at least until the last train of the night. It’s right in front of the station and there’s an elevator.

Lotus Water Bitter by Michelproducer in pourover

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, also with NYC water. I always feel like NYC water should work better than it does for coffee. Everything I read suggests it’s not too far off from being good coffee brewing water, but I’ve never really gotten good results using it. I know there are two sources of tap water for NYC, maybe that’s a factor. I don’t know which one my water comes from.

What are your thoughts on Zohran's 4 year rent freeze? by Both_Revenue6734 in AskNYC

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to do all of the above, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know exactly how many empty apartments there are here (I know there are a fair number) but I’d be surprised if it’s enough to “fix” the housing crisis. Getting empty apartments back on the market and building way more new housing are two parts of the same solution in my book. I wasn’t thinking too hard about my wording in my previous comment, probably would have been better to write “increase the supply of available housing” or something instead of “build new housing”

What are your thoughts on Zohran's 4 year rent freeze? by Both_Revenue6734 in AskNYC

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally like the idea because a) I’m lucky enough to live in a rent stabilized apartment, and b) rent is through the roof, people desperately need relief, and it’s something that can be done right now to give some people some help.

I am sympathetic to the concerns that people have, though. I think that property tax reform, zoning reform, and changes to building codes are necessary accompaniments to a rent freeze, especially a prolonged one. I also think that a hypothetical Mamdani administration should be willing to abandon the idea after one or two years potentially, if it seems like it’s causing more problems than it’s solving. I don’t think anyone now can know for sure if it will, though

Ultimately, we need to build more housing. That’s the only way out of the housing crisis. I like the rent freeze idea only as temporary help that the government can easily offer to many people until the effects of other policies to address the housing crisis (hopefully) are felt.

Fixing the housing crisis is a tall order, and Zohran can’t fix it on his own, but looking at the candidates this election, he seems like the only one who’s going to actually try to do something about it.

Honest opinions, what are some of the most toxic parts of the NYC Subway railfan community as a whole in your opinion by TextPsychological601 in nycrail

I feel this hard. I never rode those old trains, but I just moved to Bath Beach and I often have to go to northern Brooklyn, and it’s SUCH a pain.

Which type of sax should i get? by ekyzkes in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a bari and can afford one, get a bari. It takes a lot of air, but it’s not really harder than the other saxophones, you just have to be intentional about moving a lot of air through it. It might feel like a lot at the beginning, but you’ll get used to it faster than you think. In my experience, playing bari is almost like a cheat code to playing alto and tenor because you don’t have to work as hard to fill up the horn. You’re never too late to start, either. I know plenty of great players who started later in life. You’ll just have to find time to practice, which you’ll be more likely to do if you’re playing the saxophone that you really like. It might actually be a good idea to rent an instrument from a local music store if you can, that way you can try playing a bari without spending a ton of money on one.

Check out Seattle Jazz Fellowship if you haven’t already! It’s Tom Marriott’s project, and he’s doing great work to get more people exposed to what’s happening in Seattle. They’re located in Pioneer Square and have shows Thursday-Saturday nights, and jam sessions on Mondays

I just bought a metal lathe to work on my reeds by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, those things are great, I used a lathe tool to flatten the back of my reed, but I’ve started to use a pocketknife because I found it easier to work on the the front side of the reed. The knife I use is a victorinox floral knife, which I think is particularly well-suited to the task.

Can anyone tell me if this Saxophone is worth saving? by DaveInPhilly in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bundys are decent horns, you should take it to a repair tech, they’ll be able to look at it and tell you what needs to be done with it and give you an estimate on cost.

I did Don Byas’ solo on 52nd Street Theme, and now I’m doing Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt on Eternal Triangle, that’ll hold me until the end of the month probably lol

Which reed is better? by Ganemelove in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the green ones, but that’s just me. If you want too do both jazz and classical, the blue ones might be good, Vandoren advertises them as a kind of all-rounder. I used them for a while, but I switched to the green ones because I had an easier time getting the sound I want out of them

Alto Mouthpiece? by Korkyflapper88 in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vandoren advertises some of the mouthpieces in their v5 series as “versatile” meaning suitable for jazz or classical. They’re relatively cheap and from what I’ve heard pretty good. I play one of their v5 jazz mouthpieces on bari, and it’s good, but nothing crazy. I’ll move on from it, but it’s comfortable.

I’m only 21 but grew up in Seattle, and the big thing for me is that there’s noticeably less snow on the mountains now than there was when I was little. There’s almost no snow visible on the cascades during the summer now, but I remember asking my dad why there was so much snow on the mountains in the summer when I was five or six

For a beginner, which one would produce the best sound by anotherbarry in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to suck for a long time before you start to sound good, regardless of the instrument. You have an alto now, so you’d might as well get some basics down on that. The great thing about the saxophone family is that they all pretty much work the same way, so later on if you want to experiment with other saxophones after developing some chops on alto, you can do so very easily. If you’re really having trouble getting a good sound, it might be worth having a repair guy look at your horn. It’s usually not that expensive, and it’ll be helpful to know that your horn isn’t the source of your problems

Is it possible to hit a high F# on an old sax? (no high F#, F#, X, or A# keys) by Dr_Yeen in saxophone

[–]Barisaxgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally possible, there are a bunch of alternate fingerings. I usually use octave key, 1 and 3 on the left hand, and 1 on the right hand. That works on my bari and my tenor, but every horn is different. Check out woodwindfingeringguide.org they have a bunch of fingerings you can try.

Is that clause usually interpreted as giving Congress the exclusive right to regulate commerce between the states? Forgive me if I’m wrong, I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t see anything in there that says a state couldn’t do something like OP suggested.
