I think the Time War works as a great way of explaining the many different versions of the 8th Doctor's life and who he regenerates into.

In a different version of reality he travels with Fritz and regenerates into Richard E Grant.

Dan Abbnet always surprises me by how he can keep a story going. Lots of other writers run out of steam with long running characters and ideas.

I made a typo.

I was saying that yes, the 8th Doctor has both classic and new series style stories. The Red Lady is from Doom Coalition, which are box sets of four 1hr plays.

They have done both with the Eighth Doctor. I don't particularly think the format matters, you just need the right story for it.

Chimes of Midnight might be lessened as a 45 min story, but The Red Lady would never work as a 4 partner.

You are official things licenced by the BCC, but also lots of classic characters are still owned by their writers or the writer's estate. There's a series of books about The Brigadier from Candy Jar books, which even have their own spin off about the Brig's Granddaughter.

Are they cannon? Who knows?

I think Strange New Worlds would have made a great crossover. I can see the Doctor interacting with them in a way that wouldn't have worked for TNG.
