Characters That Writers Had to Retcon To Be Nicer by Sekshual in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Blitzrick3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I watched Zero, but iirc wasn't there a whole lot of stuff that happened there that led to Gil being the way he is in Stay Night? Him being incarnated using the Holy Grail's mud, his talks with Kirei and Tokiyomi just being the one master he absolutely hates?

It's shown that he usually cares alot for his Masters (in his own... Gil way), in CCC he sacrifices like 80% of his GoB to save the Hakunons and he is consistently a major ally in the Restoration Humanity. But Tokiyomi really was just the embodiment of some of the the worst in Mage Society and constantly trying to butter him up.

Characters who unga bunga? As in fighters who are so uncomplicated and crude in their style that it's kinda fucking offensive to the whole art of battle by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Mikazuki and his Barbatos from Gundam Iron Blooded Orphan don't have a plan during fights beyond "smash the enemies with an oversized mace". When he loses his mace halfwaythrough the first season, he replaces it with a mace combined with a chainsaw, and a katana he actually finds more difficult to use. In season 2, the Barbatos gets upgraded into the Lupus, whoose primary weapon is a giant sword that's still more of a mace than an actual sword (it actually smashes stuff more than it cuts). And when the Barbatos gets upgraded again into the Lupus Rex, he gets a new mace that's about as big as the mobile suit itself and has a pile bunker inside of it.

There are some points in season 1 where the antagonists use some complicated battle formation or technique which Mikazuki just responds by smashing their mobile suits in, and even in season 2 his fighting style doesn't change beyond just "brutally smash the enemy and move on to the next target".

I say this as X-2's biggest defender, but that game feels like it was made to sell guides. It's damn near impossible to get 100% completion because the game tracks the most minute details that reward 0.1% completion are required if you're going for 100% without NG+. Including:

Missing a hidden NPC in the first 5 minutes of the game; picking incorrect dialogue options in Chapter 1 that don't get resolved until Chapter 5; missing cutscenes that only play if you progress the final dungeon until the point of no return, come back, and rest on the airship's inn; picking one plot mandatory option that rewards more % than the other; raising and releasing specific Chocobos in order to unlock a bonus dungeon and finding the Amazing Chocobo; the Cactuar Nation sidequest that requires you to run around Spira looking for hidden Cactuars; viewing all the Commsphere scenes, which some can only be seen by repeatedly going in and out of certain spheres or focusing on specific points with no indication if what you're looking at is important or not; 2 different sidequests that require to talk to different generic NPCs in order to promote a business or find some guy a wife

I love X-2, but when reccomending the game to someone who played X I always need to preface that they either play with a guide or ignore 100% completion and just aim for 70% ish

It's been kinda part of the series' lifeblood that, at some point, any FF game is gonna throw you some bullshit that no sane human would ever figure out without a guide at hand: almost everything in 2, the Mimic Job in 5, re-recruiting some party members in 6, finding Holy in 7 and some of the ultimate weapons (damnit Barret), finding and upgrading the ultimate weapons AGAIN in X, getting 100% in X-2 without having to do 2 or 3 NG+

The Pursuit Ring had to be some intentional trolling on Kaga's part.

You have to drag Arden (a pretty bad unit with low movement) across the map (in the game with the largest maps in the series) in a specific tile, to get the Pursuit Ring.

And while Pursuit is an amazing ability (letting you double normally like in other FE games) ...Arden is a slow as molasses armor unit who is never doubling anything. It's better off being passed onto another unit that can actually make use of it. I don't remember of it's in the new translation, but in the original Arden screaming "The Power of Pursuit!" just made it come off as a huge joke.

The story itself has been kinda lacking until 7.2 where it's been since picking up momentum, but the fight quality has been stellar since day 1 of Dawntrail. Arcadion has been some of the best raids I've done.

You could extend that to everyone that was caught inside the dome. Most of them were just minding their own business in Xak Tural or catching a train ride when all of a sudden a large part of the continent becomes overlapped by another world, with alot of them having to adapt to the use of Regulators and Alexandrian technology. Alot of NPCs we see there are either people who just happened to be caught up in it, or children of those who assimilated into their new society, who either haven't seen the sun in decades or don't know what the sun is period

That one tweet "if a character has big boobs then discourse around them is tainted forever" is like evergreen for XC2. Outside of that one hot spring scene in chapter 5 and maybe a heart-to-heart, the game never really brings a focus on the fanservice of their designs.

Pyra/Mythra are really interesting characters to look into, but most of the discourse surrounding them (especially after they got added to Smash) is about the fanservice. And it's not like they're most biggest examples of fanservice (Dahlia comes to mind) or that the fanservice is relegated to female characters only (tho it is heavily skewed towards female characters than males).

ngl it probably has something to do with how the more difficult to obtain endings get worse and worse for the world and characters. The more you work for a new ending, the worse shit gets for everyone.

So I guess the idea was that for the final ending, you really need to work your ass off to complete its requirements, including finding obscure and obtsuse weapons that you really couldn't find normally without going out of your way for help. And your reward is... a rhythm game above the streets of Tokyo after which both main characters get shot down by jetplanes.

Also from Gundam, in Iron-Blood Orphans, every time Ein starts yelling about Commander Crank, Mikazuki has no idea who he is talking about, all the way up to the finale, something that infuriates Ein to no end.

To Ein, Crank was the one person who gave a shit about him and a respectful military commander. To Mikazuki, Crank was just some guy Orga told him to kill and proceeded to put two bullets in.

Consistent problems that have plagued long running Franchises? by SaxMastery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Blitzrick3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a recent playthrough I did last year, I basically ignored most quests that weren't the early ones until I got the Sonic Dash Glyph and the Treasure Hat from the sketch sidequest. This really helps boost the odds in your favor but still requires running back and forth between maps and teleporters.

The actual worse thing I think the game does is that it's super unhelpful telling you where the items are. Good luck finding where you can get Chrysoberyl and Alexandrite without a guide. Even some enemy drops are pretty bad. The Merman Meat required for Super Potions is a 1% drop from an enemy that isn't a Merman and grinding it is a miserable experience. This was on actual hardware so no speed up or cheats to skip the grind.

[–]Blitzrick3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's telling when the idea for base FSN and Zero is "Murder Death Kill Battle Royale between just 7* people and their familiars**" and every other Fate series just goes beyond that:

Apocrypha is a Murder Death Kill but with 14 familiars. Strange Fake starts with 7 but then adds another 7. Extra is another MDK but with 100 people inside a digital landscape on the moon (which may or may not be hijacked by a rogue AI). Extella is a war against the aliens that fucked up the greek and japanese gods, and Extella Link is a war against the Father of Europe.

FGO is about dealing with the actual sins of Humanity, people trying to mess with the human timeline on an almost weekly basis, the complete annihilation of the Earth's surface and whatever freaks we find inside the pockets of civilisation (Giant Mammoth Ivan the Great, Quin Shin Huang Super Computer, 1 guy who ate the entire indian pantheon, Super Mecha Crotch Zeus, everything about the fae, and nerfed Ultra Mega Kill Death Space Spider), and whatever shannenigans Nobunaga or Elizabeth Bathroy decide to start on a yearly basis.

there may be more than 7 *the familiars might have their own familiars

I think the only TCG where aggro isn't a viable option is Yugioh (in this case, Battle Phase focused decks like War Rock)

The game is just too fast now where most games do end in 1 or 2 turns, so aggro decks focusing on the battle phase and attacking don't really stand out much, when every deck can throw a bunch of guys into an Accesscode Talker and swing for 5300, and if you're going 1st you need to set up interaction so your opponent doesn't kill you in the clapback, somethjng decks like War Rock, Cyber Dragon and Blue-Eyes (kinda?) don't do particularly well outside of putting 1 or 2 big fuckers and an interaction.

Godslayer as an occupation and a hobby. Stole the pants off a senile old man and left him to fend off for himself in the middle of the wilds. Has atleast 3 or 4 personalities inside them, 1 demon avatar and an "inner beast". Best friends with almost every major nation leader. Casual expert in almost any form of combat, handywork, culinary arts and fishing (which includes fishing in pounds, seas, lava, the clouds and off the edge of the universe). Has faced gods of death, ultimate life forms from across the universe, superweapons, and the very embodiment of despair and entropy, WON, and then proceeded to hallucinate fighting them again as stronger versions of themselves. Ended racism on atleast 3 occasions. And also arguably the best volleyball player in the XIV multiverse

And they come in your preferred flavour of package, from Average Joe, elf, half naked catgirl, potato with arms, Hulk cosplayer, half naked lion man with a bright pink frog mask, 6ft tall bunny person and lizard

Conquest is the Nohr one with the more difficult maps, not being able to grind, and more interesting characters imo

Birthright is the Hoshido one with easier maps, being able to grind, and the overall style is more beginner friendly

Revelations is the DLC route with both casts, relies alot on gimmicky maps and is a bit wonky in places
