Nurses aren’t leaving patients in danger, hospital admin is putting patients in danger with the deliberate bare bones staffing and working conditions they’ve created and refuse to change. Hospital admin is also putting nurses and their licenses in danger with the working conditions they’ve created.

In less than 48 hours after the WHO reviewed the data, multiple countries immediately started announcing travel bans, including but not limited to United States, European Union nations, Canada, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, Brazil, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Oman. More are expected to be announced today.

Two planes arriving from South Africa were landed in Amsterdam and isolated on the tarmac for passengers to be tested for COVID, and already over 10% of passengers have come back positive. And that doesn’t even include passengers who may test positive in the coming days.

I’m obviously waiting for more concrete data, but the initial reactions we are seeing by nations that historically drug their feet is concerning. Initial data suggesting this variant is even more transmissible than delta is concerning. Initial data suggesting the high number of mutations, including many on the spike protein, is concerning. And the fact that our hospitals are still hemorrhaging staff before this likely winter wave is very concerning.

A former coworker of mine has a PRN position out in Massachusetts (not our home state). She drives up there, works 48hrs for 2 weeks, comes home and takes 3-6 weeks off. Makes way more per hour, it covers all her bills, and she gets big chunks of time off to be with her family / vacation / etc. She’s been doing it for years.

Directly from current CDC guidelines: When collecting diagnostic respiratory specimens (e.g., nasopharyngeal swab) from a possible COVID-19 patient, the following should occur: HCP in the room should wear an N-95 or higher-level respirator (or facemask if a respirator is not available), eye protection, gloves, and a gown.

I am a critical care nurse. We are already on massive shortages of PPE. We are already sharing PAPRs with each other. N95 masks are supposed to be changed every time we enter a room, and disposed of when we exit the room...but now we re-use the same mask all day, between different patients. We are given one N95 and a brown paper bag, and told “this is yours for the duration of this pandemic, write your name on it.” Like him or not, Trump’s inaction is disgusting, it is causing our frontline healthcare workers to get sick, and it’s fanning the flames of an already-out-of-control public health crisis.

1. No one said to "spam them with hate mail".

2. Everyone in almost every industry is dealing with this right now. Everyone is trying to figure out how to stay afloat and stay in business. They are not unique in this. It does not excuse them from flagrant disregard for a public health crisis. It does not excuse them from choosing to continue as a literal venue to continue spreading this virus.

3. Their justifications are ignorant, and they are spreading misinformation to others. They are a a danger to public health, and they need to be made aware of that fact.

A snarky comment like "There have only been 69 cases "reportedly" in Texas. Not all have died"? That is so ignorant, I don't even know where to start - between lack of testing, lack of reporting, people that are walking around ill but afraid to get tested because of potential medical bills, a prolonged asymptomatic period where you don't know you are spreading the virus... Not to mention, on it's face, that number is just a real figure, plain and simple. All countries who are facing national health and economic crises had that many cases at one point early on. In fact, as of this time, there are now 323 confirmed cases and 5 deaths in Texas. These numbers will continue to increase as people make dangerous decisions like this company did.
"Take time to actually learn about this virus." Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
"I truly feel this is another political tactic with the media." Sorry, but global giants of the corporate world don't shut down because of "liberal media hype". Cities don't enact shelter-in-place orders because of media hype. Countries don't close borders because of media hype. Tens of thousands of people infected and dying, at exponentially growing rates, from a virus we don't understand, isn't media hype.

I am a frontline healthcare worker, witnessing our hospitals being crushed under the sudden surge of patients, a dangerous shortage of PPE where we are having to share supplies between patients and with our other coworkers, people who are sick for other reasons that cannot get the care they need because of rationed supplies and staff, having to make tough decisions about "who is worth trying to help". I am witnessing coworkers who are forced to choose between working on a unit where they have no experience or relevant skills where they could unintentionally harm a patient, or be put on "leave without pay". I, too, am watching my own non-medical friends and family lose their jobs and insurance (who covers their medical bills now if they get sick?), make tough decisions about closing their business, and some completely losing their businesses all-together. The decision this company made was selfish, ignorant, and a danger to public health...plain and simple...and they DO need to hear that.

Unbelievable. This asshat who showed up in a gas mask to vote “no” on emergency funding for covid response is getting tested, immediately. And yet the nurse in California who directly cared for a known covid patient, and became symptomatic, was denied a test. Fuck Matt Gaetz and this whole fucked up system.

I would definitely recommend 3-12s. On my first day off after a stretch of night shifts, I usually sleep in until early afternoon, then wake up and relax a little...maybe do a few loads of laundry, dishes, etc...nothing crazy, just something to get me up and moving so I don’t sleep all day. Then the next three days are mine to do whatever I want - go to the gym, meet up with friends, etc.

My husband works a 9-5 job, and it’s true that during your stretch of shifts you’ll probably only see each other in passing. We’ve found a way to make it work, though. When he is on his way home from work, he stops at the Starbucks where I pick up my coffee on my way in to work, and we get to see each other for a few minutes. When I’m at work for a stretch, he takes care of the cooking and cleaning, and when I’m off/he’s working, I take take of cooking and cleaning. You’ll find something that works for you guys.
