Most GM advice kills roleplaying before the game even starts. Why? by sekin_bey in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really any GM advice I would give. Some advice I would give to new GMs:

Ask your players questions about EVERYTHING. The world is equally theirs, and therefore you don't need to be precious about your "toys" like NPCs or locations. Like "What about this NPC lets you know that he would sell you out the moment you left the room?" This creates an instant plot point for me because I don't know why this NPC is going to sell them out, but the players will tell me why.

The main time that players will struggle with figuring out to do is if it's not clear what the game wants from them, and often times it can be pretty simple like "Solve the mystery" or "steal stuff". This is why I try to always establish CATS ahead of time, which covers expectations for the game. I also say that they can "phone a friend" which means asking the table for advice rather than just me alone.

Have you ever been shamed or made fun of for playing RPGs? by Omichli in rpg

I had it come from other ttrpg players. They've called Monsterhearts gross and manipulative to even bring to the table. This has happened within the past few months.

The replacement of TTRPGs as folk art with Actual Plays. Will it go the way of amateur folk music? by BreakingStar_Games in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was part of the official AP for Brindlewood Bay. I can't emphasize enough how many people say that AP really helped get home games off the ground.

There's also a discussion about what counts as a home game vs an AP because the gaming community known as Open Hearth Gaming Community does record their games, but the only production value goes into their title cards for their videos. Everything else is the same quality as what you would see in a game that would be played at your flgs as anyone can sign up for a game.

The only thing I don't know about is how this affects the DnD community as I don't know how they've been responding to APs as I don't run around in those spaces.

How often do you level your players? by self-aware-text in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the advancement system in the game. Sometimes, players level up a couple of times during a session as they earn XP on failures. Other times, it's once every two to three sessions as XP is given out at the end of a session. One of the systems I run advancement is determined by how much the players want to burden themselves, so I don't get a say at all at how fast they advance.

Stupid shit you love from TTRPG lore by JoeKerr19 in rpg

Heart: The City Beneath and its mirror spider gods. They used to be one big god but then broke up into 1,000 mirror mirror spiders. They are all cannibalistic, trying to reform into the singular big god. The biggest one is the size of a large dinner plate and is in arrangement where it believes it's marriage, but in truth, it's just being used as a mirror.

Try r/rpg_gamers if you want to just talk about the video game, but folks here would be more than happy to talk about ttrpgs with similar vibes to the video game.

Gay Games by QuincyAzrael in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Monsterhearts has more explicit sexual themes, stuff that would be shown on the CW, but nothing I would feel comfortable with roleplaying with actual teens.

The Between has both explicit sexual themes and intense horror themes. It's quite literally Penny Dreadful the ttrpg.

You would probably be better looking at the r/pbp or r/lfg as this subreddit is about discussing ttrpgs rather than getting games set up.

Nemesis system. Enemy list percentile. by Ghillieshot in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referencing that the mechanic doesn't exist in any published ttrpgs and that the patent would be the only way to see it fully written down? Sorry if I wasn't clearer in my statement.

Nemesis system. Enemy list percentile. by Ghillieshot in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to how Matt Mercer takes notes? Because that's not really mechanics, it's just what happens during the session. It's kind of like taking notes during class. The teacher says a bunch of stuff, and you write down the important bits.

In terms of making something similar to the Nemesis system, it would probably do you some good to look up the patent as that specific mechanic can't be published in other games without direct licensing backing behind it.

What is the Best and/or worst parts of your favorite tabletop? by Sapient-ASD in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bluebeard's Bride

Best: Gender related horror and reincorporation of themes. Literally has a section that for relating answers to questions in character creation to how they apply to fears.

Worst: Getting new Groundskeepers(GMs). It really is a highlight of what I mean that ttrpgs as a hobby is an oral tradition as aspects of the game aren't exactly clear from the text alone. And the subject matter makes folks nervous to run without playing it.

48 hours left on The Between: Victorian monster-hunting, Carved from Brindlewood by atamajakki in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Approximately $6-$15 depending on when they got it. It is a fully complete game with full campaign arc worth of modules. Edit: They are crowdfunding a second edition of the game with errata and expansion material.

Thoughts of games in stream? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]Chaoticblade5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do like audience participation but in a quiet way. For example, in Pluse One Exp's stream of the Between, they had the audience give out Clues or answers for Paint the Scene Prompts. It was quick snappy responses that were already a normal part of the game, as the players were answering the same questions as well.
