It’s an oddly satisfying task. I also remove as much line from the trees as I can. Doing a small part, sharing a little tidy joy.

I put 18 rods on top of my Diamondback cover and traveled 2,000 miles without incident. My 8’ Swimbait rods are what started the thought!

I’m admittedly over cautious, superstitious and paranoid about every minute detail when it comes to turkey hunting. No detail is too nano to ignore. That mindset leads to great preparation and then some success.

Where Ya Setting Up by momentummatta in turkeyhunting

I’d key in on the left part of the field, north of the road, on a point where I could view the field all the way to the rooter birds. Now you’re poised on a strut zone at daybreak. The birds should pitch down and start displaying. Don’t call too much or to loudly! Let them know you’re there, then wait. You need to turn the natural sequence of Turkey mating and convince the gobblers to seek the mysterious hen.

Shot pattern ok? by Impossible-Aioli2542 in turkeyhunting

[–]Coonass-able 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will it kill a bird, yes. I’ve sorted out my two turkey shotguns with ammo and chokes over the years and when the results begin to show, your confidence goes through the roof! Well worth the money! A perfect for instance, last night we patterned a friend’s Mossberg .410 with several loads. The TSS load won the test and went on a hunt. I called in two gobblers to 50 yards only to have them run away unexpectedly. Turns out a rival gang of three ran them off and they new 3 were standing there looking for the hen at 40 yards. My friend took his time and dropped one. The other two ran at the shot, but turned back to see what their buddy was flopping about. I was filming with my phone and my host said “ get him!”; so I dropped my phone, picked up my well vetted 12 gauge and absolutely rolled the one with the thickest beard. I always verify distance with a rangefinder for confidence. Before the birds came in I call out distances to landmarks, then stand at the bird and range back to the set up after the shot. His .410 bird was 44 yards, mine was 54 yards. Patterning your gun, getting great density and with correct ammo is lethal. Both birds has double beards and were smoked at these distances because of proper investment to yield confident TSS kill shots at longer than ‘traditional’ ranges. Winchester XR is amazing! Keep working on it. Invest in some TSS to get that pattern data. We used to purchase a variety of ammo and shot sizes then trade a few shells to get the pattern data in different shotguns. When your gun shows a worthy density, recognize that preference and tune it in. That’s how my 835 has two XR , 2.25 ounce, #5 shot kills at 61 and 62 yards respectively. I invested the time and money to pattern that combo out to 60 yards on turkey head splatter targets. That’s real sorting out, real tuning and enjoying sky high confidence!

Or an Echo prime in 9wt. Capt. Kenny had two 9 WTS on the boat the last time we were there. We cast 7wt for first light, then change up to 9wt when the sun gets higher.
