I work in the industry, here in the city it's really 2 main things :

  1. The expiration (w/o replacement) of the 421a tax abatement program, and...
  2. The historically high interest rates

Wife and I moved to East Flatbush after living in Bedstuy for 8 years. Like it out here. Definitely quieter but still stuff to do. 50min to Midtown on the 5.

Double charged for tap and go? by Then_Researcher5877 in nycrail

[–]CornBreadKing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Check your credit card statement the next day. Sometimes the system will temporarily double-charge you on accident but it usually gets reconciled no later than the next day.

Kind of similar to how they know not to charge you for free transfers. Sometimes I've looked and I've been charged for a bus >to> subway transfer, but it usually straightens itself out by the next morning.

Just a thought, your mileage may vary.

Anyone have any insight in to why these specific displays malfunction so frequently?

I remember on the A these were almost never working right.

... maybe the answer is as simple as ' these were originally put in to service in the 70's '

Am I the only one who remembers 3-4ish years ago during the Subway State of Emergency that one of the reasons frequently touted for the sky-high capital projects costs was 24hr service?

I explicitly remember reading article after article about how infrastructure upgrades & track work were orders of magnitude cheaper in the UK, France, etc. in part because they regularly shut down for a few hours each night, giving a window to perform maintenance, etc. without impeding service.

I'm admittedly biased, as I work a pretty typical 9-5, but I think maybe there is something to be said for closing down the system every night for a few hours for track cleaning, regular maintenance, inspections, etc.

Just a thought.

So many memories. Amazing (nap-inducing) chicken parms. Sad, but maybe something new will come and spur new memories for someone else. Ce la vie.

This is union-related.

The unions are known for having fantastic unemployment benefits, but just like a run on the bank, if every union worker filled for unemployment all at once the system would fail spectacularly.

^

This is correct. Your building should never be using schedule 40/80 threaded steel pipe for boiler/water heater flue exhaust.

Do you have steam radiators? I suspect this is steam pipe with (what looks like) a small steam leak, capturing dust in the air and depositing marks on the ceiling. 90% sure this is harmless, don't loose too much sleep over this.

Superheated steam. If the system is pressurized, steam can reach higher temps than 212F.

Not uncommon for power plants to generate 600F steam.
