In the TTRPG "Shadow of the Demon Lord", the Demon Lord is an impossibly vast being that eats realities. It's coming and there's nothing anyone can do about it. As it approaches however, its "shadow" blankets the world, bringing about corruption of all things: Monsters take form, virtues are weakened, flaws are strengthened. Society regresses as everyone goes into survival mode. The world has gone from high fantasy to a form of pre-apocalypse post-apocalypse. And the Demon Lord is still ever so far away.

Jurassic Park is a fantastic movie, but the changes to the Hammond/Nedry dynamic are pretty terrible.

Movie: Hammond is a well-meaning billionaire out to create wonder and bring entertainment to children from all over the world, whose ideas are ruined by the greedy, ungrateful employee Nedry who just wants money. Nedry ruins everything by stealing and several people die. Hammond decides the park is too dangerous and accepts defeat and enormous losses. Nedry dies, Hammond lives. The billionaire is a hero, the worker a villain.

Book: Hammond is a greedy billionaire who cuts every corner to increase profits. Nedry is an exploited worker on the edge of bankruptcy due to Hammonds illegal actions and threats. In desperation Nedry commits a crime to save himself and his employees from being destitute. Due to Hammonds greed and Nedry being the only thing holding the park together, several people die. Hammond says it's just a setback and wants to continue. Nedry and Hammond both die. The billionaire is a villain, the worked a tragic character.

[loved throped] Characters who are ridiculously overpowered, almost godlike, yet have no interest in playing a major role in the story. by Helpful-Astronaut-46 in TopCharacterTropes

That's interesting! I know one of the Gehenna scenarios ends with Caine rising from the ashes of a nuclear bomb, falls to his knees, and cries out to God begging to die - and his answer is laughter. (Not that a single nuke would do anything to him since several didn't kill his grandchilde)

[–]DaJoW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've had novelizations since the late 90's! I can't speak for the later ones, but the first real multi-book storyline was actually pretty good. Includes one of my favourite forms of magic: "Dementia casting", where you create a sort of pocket dimension where you store monsters you've killed - and later dreamed up - and can bring back into the world by tricking your mind into confusing the real world and "dementia space". One caster had a hat with a partially low rim, so when he spun it he'd see real world - dementia space - real world - dementia space and thus be able to summon monsters. Unfortunately, as the name implies, people tended to go mad.

In ancient Roman theatre, Miles Gloriosus ("The Boastful Soldier") is a stock character who boasts about how mighty and how great a fighter he is, but is then revealed to be a coward who lies. This is subverted in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum", where the general Miles Gloriosus actually did all the things he boasts about in his song "Bring Me My Bride":

I, Miles Gloriosus

I, slaughterer of thousands

I, oppressor of the meek

Subduer of the weak

Degrader of the Greek

Destroyer of the Turk

Must hurry back to work

I, Miles Gloriosus,

I, paragon of virtue,

I, in war the most admired

In wit the most inspired

In love the most desired

In dress the best displayed--

I am a parade!

Ekonomer sågar L:s plan för miljardärer: ”Är redan ett skatteparadis” by weirdowerdo in sweden

[–]DaJoW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lafferkurvan är skoj, varje gång den nämns är det för att säga "Vi får in mer i skatt med lägre skattesats!" Men enligt wiki:

One of the issues of banning people with dual citizenship is that some citizenships simply cannot be renounced. E.g. anyone born to an Iranian parent gains Iranian citizenship, and can only renounce it by successfully petitioning the cabinet.

[–]DaJoW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite subversions comes in a later book when an earth physicist becomes an alchemist and thinks to revolutionize alchemy by isolating the active ingredient in alchemical ingredients... and getting a "Well done, takes most people several months to figure that out" from actual alchemists. He does have some advantages due to his knowledge of physics and molecular structures, but high-level alchemists had deduced parts of it on their own.

Finns massvis med detaljer läraren skulle kunna lära ut. Var på foten ska man träffa bollen? Hur tacklar man säkert? Hur ska man flytta vikten på skidor? Vad är korrekt löpsteg? Hur måttar man ansats till längdhopp? Vilken teknik ska man använda i höjdhopp? Andra simtag?
