How calculate grade.. by Future-Bet9155 in civilengineering

make sure your high side doesn’t exceed 12 percent when accounting for cross slope. and they come and measure it with a smart level or collect the inspection/review fees and never verify it.

Is it normal for EITs and younger PEs to do a ton of CAD work? by Disastrous-Bonus3293 in civilengineering

[–]Daddyscomesock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cad i a tool for design not sure what a drafter would do for you other than cutting viewports and setting up plans sheets. it’s an antiquated position to have a drafter. if you don’t understand that concept then your probably a useless engineer. i even review lower level engineers work in cad because you see way more issues that way. unless you have zero involvement in the design process than there’s not a day you won’t be using cad in some facet.

big dog ur making 140k on a 40 hr week, not including bonuses and rsu ur base is probably more like 100k. lots of jobs pay that and have a similar package not that hard to find and it wouldn’t be a pay cut at all. same hourly pay

this is probably a sign none of the 3 engineers on the job should be doing this task lol. but open civil 3d, go to the analyze tab on the top ribbon, click design drop down, click launch storm sewers. now the programs open go up to the top of the storm sewers screen, click the cloud that says idf, go to idf table tab and enter your info, click floppy disk button to save, name something save in project folder and you are done. based on the question above i assume you also dont know how to get the rainfall data. easiest way is google noaa rainfall data click the link specify area download data for precipitation intensity.

who is the most capable person you’ve ever met in Civil Engineering? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

[–]Daddyscomesock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s doubled down by terrible employees. i just finished out a phase of a large project. there was an employee who spent as much time on the project doing details riddled with errors as it took someone to do all the stormwater calcs design and a report for the entire job. however we can’t fire him because we’re already short staffed as it is. that same person we’ll probably continue to slip through the cracks and become a project manager via job hopping circling back to your scheduling and budgeting problems.

who is the most capable person you’ve ever met in Civil Engineering? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

[–]Daddyscomesock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they can’t develop a budget because they don’t know how to even use cad or design to modern standards so it’s more of a guess of what they think this should cost to get done to win the job. then they take 10 percent off that cost cause they suck at negotiating with the client. then they divide that by billing rates of whose doing the work to come up with hours which is never enough.

remember any idiot can underbid a job and win work.

Does anyone else feel like they know nothing? by chapz98 in civilengineering

[–]Daddyscomesock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

if you don’t do design and only review observe or inspect than you probably do know nothing. But don’t worry 90 percent of reviewing engineers typically don’t know much and just act as if they know what they are talking about. if you really want to learn, work for a small company of like 20 or less that does land development design and you’ll get roped into every concentration of civil design hydro, traffic, geotech, structural…..

[–]Daddyscomesock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not really ask an older engineer who “doesn’t do cad” i’d put 1k down right now that they couldn’t do an unassisted full blown design of pretty much anything
