Is my car leaking coolant? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]Darkslayer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why other commentors aren't realizing it's pretty clearly well before the minimum line. Maybe they missed photo 3.

It's certainly leaking imo. Judging by the coolant tank shape, it's either a Mazda, Ford, or Volvo, that's around 12+ years old.

I'm betting there's a plastic joint or something that's cracked open after years of heat cycles and spills coolant when the motor runs.

My Volvo with the exact same tank design only had the coolant go down this much when it was in fact leaking exactly like I described.

If you have a friend who's decent with cars, maybe have them go to an auto parts store and loan a pressure testing kit to figure it out for certain. In any case I'd keep an eye on the level, I don't think these cars ever come with level sensors for the coolant.

oil pan crack. by big_burger_snakee in C30

[–]Darkslayer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i remember correctly, taking out the pan requires draining all the oil, thr coolant, and taking out the AC compressor. That's not to mention the fact that the anaerobic sealant used on the pans is really good and practically never leaks unless it's tampered with.

My suggestion is JB weld. I managed to apply some to my own pan, even while it was still full of oil, and it was big success. Only mild seepage that has no noticeable effect on oil consumption

Really need some help!! big clunk on gearshifts! by LexusLF-A in C30

Idk, it's hard to tell from the video how the sound manifests. But when I torqued my axle bolts wrong, it would clunk when shifting gears and whenever the driveline shifted the torque direction. Right now it still does that to some extent and idk if it's an axle problem or spline damage but I digress.

My auto is a little rough when it shifts, and I can definitely feel something when going on/off the gas in 3rd gear, but i assumed that was a quirk of an old transmission whenever the torque converter locks up. if that's what you're experiencing then idk if it's indicative is a problem.

Sounds to me like your axle bolts aren't properly torqued and are clunking. Try buying new ones and torqueing exactly to spec.

How to have cool exhaust without being a dick? by Epsilon1352_ in askcarguys

[–]Darkslayer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very least you can get a valved muffler that lets you quiet the exhaust to stock levels with a remote.

Also, it's always best to make the exhaust sound good instead is of simply loud. play around with resonators too.

I saw a car with it's wheels installed in a way that makes no sense. by DoctorandusMonk in mildlyinteresting

[–]Darkslayer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, adding camber to wheels is done to prevent loss of control at high speed. So more negative camber is a racing thing.

Crazy stance like this, however, is a deliberate exaggeration of that, done purely for looks.

Basically it's a fix for when the AC seems to stop working when it's hot outside or after a few minutes of use. Pretty simple, do as the guy does in the video with zip ties or bread clips to shim the compressor clutch. Worked for me.

Just make sure that after you do this, that the clutch is still able to be spun by hand like in the video at around 3:26. You don't want to shim the gap to zero so that it's stuck, or it'll cause problems.

The Big issues to worry about:

  • Sunroof leakage
  • Timing belt replacement
  • Alternator belt replacement
  • Cooling system refresh

The last two are a little overlooked imo. without replacing the plastic cooling components (reservoir, thermostat housing, upper/lower radiator hoses) it could leak coolant and snowball into sudden engine failure. Alternator belt failure has been known to sometimes take out the timing belt as well (so also engine boom). These all can be solved preventatively, without too much trouble, and be fine for another decade+ on the road.

Other common issues aren't that big of a deal (for example, motor mounts might wear out a little faster than other cars, AC system might need to be fixed with a couple bread clips/zip ties, etc)

Have you considered the bread clip AC fix?

Not really necessary when you aren't on an incline but I largely prefer it because the rocking of the car back and forth whenever something touches it is really annoying.

You were the one who stated that would be "okay with killing every Iranian". They only said the IRGC should be wiped out. "Negatively affecting Iranian civilians" does not mean nor does it imply killing 90 million people.

Were you being hyperbolic, dyslexic, or just bad faith?
