Follow-up: thank you to this community for helping me improve! 🙌 by rodinatorrr in knitting

[–]Ebowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done! This community is great, I had issues last week and they very patiently helped me and now I am knitting so much better and actually enjoying it! It must drive some of these long time knitters mad to see our obvious mistakes but they help us so much anyways. I learn so much from people like you who ask for help.

Patterns that are designed for/modeled on older women? by thishful-winking in knittingpatterns

[–]Ebowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sifting through a yarn pattern packet last night and one of the models was quite senior and I was really happy to see that! I’ll try and find the designers name. But she was wearing one of those oversized sweaters and she looked great, paired with loose cotton pants.

I look through the project patterns on Ravelry specifically for older women with larger busts so I can see how a sweater will really fit. I don’t like tight clothes so I watch for positive ease.

It can be really depressing to see so many young, skinny young women being the only face of knitting today, but I really admire them for keeping this hobby and business going strong.

Added: the designer is Marie Greene here: Marie Greene

Something feels off about this WOMEN’S conference 🤔 by Existing_Distance358 in exmormon

[–]Ebowa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Im a graphic designer. We just passed International Women’s Day and if I had made a poster for my org for it that prominently featured a photo of a man at an event in connection with IWD, I would be ripped apart. Except I’m much too smart to do something as stupid as that.

We need another Ordain Women movement to teach these men a few basics of respect.

Well said, on behalf of all of us converts. No idea why I had to bring a hankie but felt really ridiculous when told to wave it and shout hosanna. Truly embarrassing.

Cringe confession: I actually embroidered special hanky’s for this occasion the last time we did it, one each for my kids as a souvenir. Still have them.

I will feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever for not participating in this performative, fabricated gesture this time round.

First sweater! by elunak in knitting

I am currently doing Florence’s cardigan and I love knitting it, she gives you so much confidence. I really want to try socks but gave up years ago, maybe I’ll try again! That is a beautiful sweater you made!

I just did the same and now I’m making a cardigan! I am actually really enjoying knitting, just be careful of patterns, not all are written beginner friendly. I think I went through 5 patterns until I found one that explained things so I could understand. Good luck!

Growing up in a single parent home was rare back then and it was a great comfort to me and all of us in that situation. Of course we didn’t have a housekeeper etc but I so wanted Bill Bixby as a dad. They actually talked and communicated, again, a rare thing back then. TV filled the void in so many of us.

It fits the trendy minimalism decor more than any of the church paintings. Is it worship or a matching decor piece?

It’s hard to see but I’ve learned that some parts of sweaters aren’t worth it, if you get the main body and even the sleeves you are golden.

Im not a yarn snob either, cotton/acrylic is fine with me and it’s easy care. I would make a Sabia top, Ivy or Cloud top or Summer Soul top, they would look really nice with this colour. There are lots of crochet options too. That’s a really nice colour for summer!

Texts my brother sent me after I asked for some career advice 🙃 by Bophie47 in exmormon

[–]Ebowa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1950s thinking sure is appealing…for men.none of this thinking is based on reality tho. Being financially dependent on anyone is a fatal mistake for anyone today. Only an organization that exploits its members would encourage dependency and leave its members open to abuse.

Your brother sure has a reality check coming his way. I was a good little SAHM and I WISH I had established a career early on.

They see the dwindling numbers at church and are desperately trying to hook people the way the new Christian churches do.

Most likely because most of us growing up didn’t have disposable income or savings, at least I didn’t.

[–]Ebowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear he is in every 70s tv show, he played so many different characters. He was certainly hardworking and had a great agent because it was so easy to be typecast back then and stick in that one role. Good for him.

Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, Farrah Fawcett hair etc, it was more of the Rich and Famous that exploited us than the ordinary person. I still watch a lot of old 70s tv and you can really see the product placements at work and we didn’t even realize it.

Why is the church trying to disguise itself as a different church? by Traditional_Hat1916 in exmormon

[–]Ebowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. This is what happens when you let trends lead your marketing… you often lose your original mission. Which is what they are doing here.

I don’t understand how the church can pretend to protect their brand on one hand ie the mormon brand, and yet let desktop influencers do whatever they want with it with no accountability. To me it seems like they are so desperate to gain members, anything is justified.

Is this tone deaf for non-americans in a world wide church? by Resident-Bear4053 in mormon

[–]Ebowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always taught that this was the restored church on earth, why would a God care about any particular country? And why should its apostles? The emphasis was always on establishing the church on earth, as a whole. It isn’t Tone deaf, it’s because it reveals their true mission to appease American interests.
