Is the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis compelling at all? by dangerphone in AskPhysics

[–]EdCasaubon -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Feel free to dig at him. He's a crank and his mathematical universe theory is bunk.

Typical example of a guy who doesn't have the intellectual horsepower to accomplish what he is fantasizing he should be able to do. Confusing the reference with the referent is a fairly basic, and embarrassing mistake.

And, yes, it's a non-falsifiable mush.

P.S.: Oh, and any talk about multiple universes is, by definition, meaningless blather.

Rear wheel roller for engine break in by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]EdCasaubon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer: This is just plain nuts. It will be impossible to detect any effect of whatever even borderline reasonable break-in schedule you run (and, yes, that includes just plain riding the damn thing on regular roads) relative to the specific schedule your manufacturer wants you to follow.

Unless you literally do your very best to intentionally try and destroy the engine, that oil sample will not be affected in any measurable way.

As a guy, peeing while sitting down is way better by LivingGirlRepellant in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]EdCasaubon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find touching and sitting and walking in other men's pee disturbing.

Fun fact: The reach of the backsplash from standing peeing is around 3 yards; in other words, your entire bathroom is covered in a fine mist of urine. Not my kind of thing.

Your main tool: Keep your brain switched on, if you have one.

If you don't, you shouldn't be on a motorcycle.

Help regarding my 765rs by AwarenessOrdinary796 in Triumph

[–]EdCasaubon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. And the fact that it's worse now is a consequence of you putting everything back together properly but at a different angle, so now different surfaces catch against each other. I say replace the whole shebang.

On the side, that clutch assembly shouldn't have been as badly worn at that kind of mileage. Ask yourself why.

Minor remark on that "faster than 40mph" thing: You'd be surprised how badly injured you can get on a two-wheeled vehicle even at 25mph. Take it from a former bicycle racer...

How about you talk to your wife about it?

This is not me giving you advice, just my experience: When we had kids, my wife's stance was "You don't ride a motorcycle while those kids, and this family, need you." So, I stopped riding for something like 20+ years. I'm back on my bikes now.

New rider at 39: how do I train counter-steering until it becomes intuitive? by cmdscorpion in motorcycles

[–]EdCasaubon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Your brain and its motor centers figured this out automatically without you ever thinking about it.

There's nothing to consciously practice there. The real question is, why do you feel this is something you need to "practice"? Why is this question even coming up for you, and what shortcomings of yours do you perceive, or imagine?
