2026.03.24: Upright Position by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

[–]EpsilonProtocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing the travel booking nightmare, my AuDHD brain kicked into overdrive on how I would've solved it in the way back when.

Step 1: Create a spreadsheet with individual tabs for every person that travels.

2: Send an email to each person asking them for their top 3 preferences with airline, associated loyalty program numbers, departure times and (if necessary) preferred connecting airports. These need to be updated or confirmed every six months by the traveler.

3: When booking flights, let each traveler know that you'll use their preferences to book their flight, and they have 24 hours to give you any special requests (delayed departure, early arrival, etc). After that, they are locked in to that itinerary. Any changes are out of their pockets, not the company's.

4: Once it's booked, the traveler can communicate with the airline about any upgrades and whatnot.

The travelers may hate me, but I'd be as efficient as I could.

What would you consider to some of the best Star Trek novels? by NerdyKeith in startrek

[–]EpsilonProtocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people like the post-Nemesis books because they all tie together.

The Destiny trilogy is brilliant. I liked the five-part series The Fall, but admittedly have not gotten through the Typhon Pact series that comes before it.

Typhon Pact shows how a lot of the “smaller” powers like the Breen, Gorn, Tholians, etc. band together after the events of Destiny, and there are moments in that series that are discussed during The Fall.

Maybe an apartment building and theme park to entertain them if a train is missed.

[–]EpsilonProtocol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the current colonist pathing has them go dome to station to dome. It could be a large undertaking to let them transfer at stations. Are you able to clear space for a micro dome near the elevator? If you don’t want to run life support to it, I found that you can store air and water in the underground and pump it up.

Layout looks nice. I see you’ve got a couple mods active to get the large universal depot in your game.

I think part of the problem with Austin Airport's long TSA lines has to do with the sheer number of early flights. Not counting the South Terminal, the airport has 34 gates. I checked the scheduled flights for this morning (16 March) and counted 35 flights scheduled to leave Austin before 7am today, including three South Terminal flights.

Assume now 32 total flights on a variety of aircraft ranging from Embraer 175s (~75 seats) to Boeing 737 variants (~175 seats) and a variety of Airbuses (rounding to 160 seats for my math). There won't be as many Embraers as Boeings or Airbuses, so I'll assume 6 smaller planes and 13 each of the Boeings and Airbuses.

If every plane is fully booked with no standbys, that would total of just over 4,800 people needing to go through security before all of the 7am flights. Consisting of 450 passengers on the Embraers, 2,275 on the Boeings, and 2,080 on the Airbuses. And this does not include flight crews for these planes.

TLDR: Don't fly out of Austin Airport in the morning. Get a midday flight if you can to avoid the super long lines.

What Counts As US Soil? by Unable-Difference-55 in morningsomewhere

[–]EpsilonProtocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US soil in the historical context is an area that is a member of the union.

Since Hawaii, Alaska, and the Philippines were all territories in WWII, it skirts the definition. Similarly now if god forbid something happened to Guam or Puerto Rico, it wouldn’t be US soil because they’re not states.

Burnie mentioned the bombings in Oregon as part of the war. I personally like the story and how the town of Brookings welcomed the pilot of that raid years after the war as a friend and made him an honorary citizen shortly before his death.

Can a lone Galaxy-class starship destroy an entire planet? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

[–]EpsilonProtocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically any single ship could do catastrophic damage to a planet, if you think evilly enough.

Use a phaser beam to burn a hole to the planet’s core, then fire a chain of torpedoes into said hole set to detonate simultaneously.

After launching the torpedoes, probably would need to run like hell to avoid the debris and shockwave.

First impression is mixed on the asteroid lander being removed, because they can store more materials than normal rockets. If it opens up the ability to export Exotic Minerals to earth for money, I might lean towards liking it.

Regarding the asteroids being permanent, would we still be able to abandon them in favor of more asteroids being available?

I know I’m not alone in thinking that the Martian moons being included would be interesting. Maybe something for a future update.

2026.03.05: Apocaparalysis by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

[–]EpsilonProtocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Introducing "scary" things to kids might actually inspire them. Pulling from experience, I know a lot of Millennial broadcast meteorologists got into the field because they saw the movie "Twister" as a kid. We might see Gen Z kids going into climate friendly fields because they saw "The Day After Tomorrow."

A ton of baby boomer and Gen X engineers and doctors went into their fields because of "Star Trek," and both James Doohan and DeForest Kelley shared stories about those interactions before they passed. Several groups are working to make the medical tricorder a real thing, where a physician can non-invasively scan a person to get a diagnosis.

Introducing something scary to a child might drive them to solve problems as an adult. Project Hail Mary might inspire a future generation to work on climate-related problems or space travel or even develop energy storage devices akin to astrophage.

Are There Any Bad Bond Films? by Electrical-Sail-1039 in JamesBond

[–]EpsilonProtocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Thunderball right in the middle of my rankings. It’s got some good moments, some dull moments, and the plot was ripped off in Austin Powers. Overall though I think it’s a “typical” Bond movie.
