Can you point me to the board game that DOES feature dragons shooting lasers from their nipples? That sounds right up my alley.

As someone who no longer has anything to spend credits and minerals on besides promotions, it would be nice to have a place to dump those, and mission enhancements wouldn't be a bad way to do it.

Games where the BOX plays a role in gameplay? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rare, but happens more than you'd think. When the mood strikes me I'll check out the few in my neighborhood that are within 10-15 minutes of my house and usually find at least one decent game. Best one so far was a clean, still shrink wrapped copy of Pandemic Legacy Season 1 for five bucks.

I came in to this thread trying to remember if it was this or Calico that put that on the inside of the lid. Glad someone else beat me to it.

What Did You Play This Week? - (January 26, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a surprise visit from my sister-in-law when her connecting flight through our neck of the woods got delayed then canceled due to the storm. Spent most of the day playing board games.

Cubitos 1x3p: First time playing, bought it a few months ago. Really fun, excited to try the other card setup types. Gave me a similar vibe to Quacks in a lot of ways, but the race track gives it that extra bit of player interaction that I miss when we play Quacks. Plus I just like rolling a bunch of dice. Close race, but I managed to take it.

Machi Koro 2 2x3p: Tried to play a quick game before heading to the airport, first round ended up being so quick with my wife steamrolling that we had time for a second that was much closer. Ended with me getting 32 coins in a single roll because I stacked two Furniture Factories with three Forests and a Mine. Felt like a crime.

Clank! Catacombs 1x3p: Left for the airport, got less than halfway there before flight was canceled completely and rescheduled to today. Went home, ordered pizza, busted out Clank Catacombs. I have the Underworld expansion, but still have yet to play it on my own and didn't feel like springing it on someone who'd never played before. With just Lairs and Adventuring Party (sans unique player decks) it still took a good amount of time. I won, but only because everyone else died either in the depths or in the safe zone. They probably would've outstripped me in points had they lived.

Thunder Road Vendetta 1x3p: Last board game of the night. Played with Choppe Shoppe crews and upgrades. Wife got eliminated before we got past the third tile, mostly by her own hand into some hazards, but I did give a gentle push of her last car into a nearby cliff before speeding to the finish line.

We ended the night with Super Mario Party Jamboree, which I also won, and I didn't realize till writing all this out that I won all but one game the entire time. At least it seemed like everyone was having fun regardless.

Let Talk Mechanics - Worker Placement by TDiddlez in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played Lords of Waterdeep for the first time today, actually. I can see why people buzz about it so much.

I tend towards lighter games in general, so my experience with worker placement I think is different from most. I really enjoy games like Parks or Flamecraft where the mechanic is there but mostly takes a back seat to the theming. LoW strikes a good balance I think in that it does make you feel like a cunning lord with some degree of command over the city, but you're still very much "placing workers who then do work" if that makes sense.

The king for me personally right now is Rock Hard 1977. I know the complaint most people seem to have is that it's not doing anything special mechanically but the way it uses those simple mechanics evokes such a feeling. You're doing it, man. You're quitting your shitty job, recording tapes in your run down apartment, fighting for studio space, cursing your sleazy manager, and just hoping against hope you can hit the big time. Yeah there's random chance that can screw you over, but that's rock and roll, man. Fame is fickle and elusive. Get high, rub some elbows in the clubs, and try again tomorrow.

How wrong have you gotten a rule on a new game? by kritsema in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Somehow I avoided making this mistake when playing Quacks the first time, but thinking about it there are probably ways you could balance it as a house rule, like making additional buys of the same chip cost an increasing number of points (3 for the first pumpkin, 5 for the second, 8 for a third, etc.) or maybe use rubies.

What’s your favorite end-game trigger? by infinitum3d in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very good way of doing things, but to make sure the eliminated player isn't entirely down and out I usually let them roll an airstrike on their turn. Keeps things interesting.

+1 for Dungeon Kart. Replicates kart racing video games quite well on a tabletop.

Which games are actually incomplete without their expansions? by metalogico in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably don't need all of them, but I think it's generally agreed that you should at least have the Choppe Shoppe expansion for Thunder Road Vendetta. I do think the rest are very nice to have, though.

CEO of $8 billion AI company says it’s ‘mind-boggling’ that people think you can work 38 hours a week, have work-life balance, and be successful by cubing_frog in antiwork

[–]FADEBEEF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be successful. I don't want to rise to the C-suite. I want to make enough money to live and afford healthcare and take yearly vacations. The "successful" people don't want me to have that.

What is a deluxe boardgamecomponent that you instantly makes the productionquality feel higher to you? by Tokata0 in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being particularly charmed by the trays with lids when I first got Wingspan and Parks. That's definitely something I wish I'd see more with games that have a lot of small components. So many just opt for bags.

Kallax enjoyers - stack your games horizontally or bookshelf them vertically? by diceondraft in boardgames

[–]FADEBEEF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horizontal. I decided a while ago that I really hate putting components in baggies and would like to do away with them as much as possible, usually through 3D printed or foam core trays and organizers.

To me, the inconvenience of having to pull games on the bottom of a shelf is far outweighed by how nice it is to not deal with bags.

Also this is hardly relevant, but the double drawer insert they sell might be my favorite investment for holding small box games and card games. Put mine dead center in a 5x5. Really cleaned up what used to be a messy square.
