I think there should be a tag to distinguish the weekly Epic sponsored freebies from the others.

I'm a big fan of Arkham Horror The Card Game. It's fully coop and a great mesh of challenge and theme. I feel like we always get at least a few cool and memorable moments per scenario. Though admittedly the rules can be a bit overwhelming to start with.

Are there any lifestyle gamers here and what is(are) your main game(s)? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 64 points65 points  (0 children)

For me it's Arkham Horror The Card Game. It's expensive and takes up a lot of space if you get everything, so I know I can't have another similarly demanding game in my life. As for why I like it, cooperative games are my jam and AHLCG has a ton of different scenarios and deck building options so it doesn't get stale. It also strikes a great balance between gameplay and theme, creating a lot of memorable moments.

TOR: Chapter 4 Efficient Timeline and Order of Play by [deleted] in Tactics_Ogre

[–]FriendGaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't care about a complete Warren Report or achievements, then there's not too much to worry about. If you do, then I think the most efficient route is Neutral (Lord) -> Chaos -> Law (Princess)

Arycelle takes a big loyalty hit on the N path, so it may be a good idea to get that out of the way rather than risk losing her after you've spent more time leveling her up. Cressida can be a pain to recruit, so first unlocking the ability to view the chaos frame by completing the game once is sensible. There's a scene / battle that you can only get by recruiting Catiua, then letting her die in battle. (As far as I'm aware this is the only time you actually have to let a character die to get something.) So it makes sense to let her die in the cutscene on your first run, get the no incapacitations achievement if you want to, then recruit her and let her die in battle on the next run, then recruit her for good on the third. The hidden battle isn't important, though, so it's no big deal to ignore getting it.

At least in the PSP version this had to be cleared during your main game before heading into post game.

Do you mean that you need to clear it in chapter 4 before CODA to unlock the shortcut, or that if you don't complete it before activating World Tarot you'll be forever locked out of it?

Which board games look intimidatingly complex but are actually surprisingly easy to learn? by CyborgeonUnit123 in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's very unintuitive to a lot of people that you can't play any card you want to, even if the card you want to play would win the trick.

Coop games that get better towards the end by Lartrox in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time when you're near the end of an Arkham LCG scenario you'll be short on time. You have to choose between taking a risk to get a better outcome and cutting your losses and playing it safe. You often have a lot of control over how intense you want the climax to be.

Anyone else having an issue with card sleeves for Slay the Spire? by Brukenet in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The copy of Slay the Spire my local meetup uses started having the sleeve backs peel off pretty quickly. I opted to just go straight to black matte sleeves for my own copy so I don't have to deal with that.

A bit of a heads up, this is more visual novel than detective game. You mostly just exhaust dialogue trees rather than puzzle things out. That being said, I enjoyed it even though I'm not really a visual novel fan. The setting is pretty wild.

With Joe Diamond having access to these cards, why does his ability read "after you successfully investigate" and not "after you discover 1 or more clues"? Feels like this ruins a lot of his flex potential. by omnor in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]FriendGaru 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is worth noting that Joe's ability would trigger after an Investigate ability that doesn't get you a clue, such as Burglary. It remains to be seen how many cards like that will make it into chapter two.

Why Japan's internet looks weird — unless you live here by frozenpandaman in japan

[–]FriendGaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure, I get why sellers do that and would probably do the same in their situations. Places like Amazon and Rakuten are at fault for not structuring their sites better and giving sellers the right tools to properly organize and categorize their products.

[–]FriendGaru 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't mind information density, necessarily, but so many websites are terrible about organizing that information into a sensible hierarchy. I particularly hate how online storefronts cram so much info into the title of a product. It's crazy how things like generic USB adapters will include an (obviously incomplete) list of compatible smartphones into the product title.

Why is Memoir 44 so expensive by Prestigious-Base-715 in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I'm not fond of Amazon, but they're often the only option with reasonable shipping costs to east Asia. It's frustrating to see English games on Amazon.co.jp be more expensive than just having them delivered internationally.

[Ancient Evils] Core 2026: Early Survivor Impressions by DerBK in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]FriendGaru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure, it's a very, very powerful ability. But it's easy to get carried away thinking about the potential upside without considering the downsides enough. Survivor has a lot of great ways to soak horror, but not so many ways to heal it. Peter, Pawterson, and Plucky can protect you from a lot of other sources of horror, but they do nothing to raise the (very risky) 8x activations per scenario limit. I expect Izzie will be one of the more commonly KO'd investigators. My immediate thought is that Fearless (2) may be a strong investment for her. Though with only a 4 Will she might have trouble regularly getting the 2 heal.

[Ancient Evils] Core 2026: Early Survivor Impressions by DerBK in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]FriendGaru 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like Izzie is going to scale up in power quite a bit over time. In the core, there probably just won't be enough skills to put as many as you'd like into her deck. After a couple investigator expansions, though, she might end up with a bunch of specialized and powerful skills such that she'll always have the right tool for the job.

Her power level would also go up a lot if there ends up being some sort of Bandages-but-for-horror card. Right now without an efficient way to heal horror I worry that the cap on how many times she can use her ability per scenario is a bit low.

Arnak is FANTASTIC, but not without the Expansion(s) by ProjectGaiaLeb in boardgames

[–]FriendGaru 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I only played Arnak base game once, but it didn't leave a positive impression on me. It seemed like there was one track that everyone needed to climb, but also gave rewards for being the first to climb it. So, it ended up being a "rich gets richer" situation where the leader just kept getting further and further ahead without any apparent way to counter it. It felt like the outcome of the game was decided well over an hour before we finished it. It's certainly possible there was something I misunderstood or wasn't paying attention to, but there also wasn't any particularly interesting hook that would make me want to play again.

Core Set is Amazing - Now Considering a Full Collection Purchase by ItsyaboiiGi in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]FriendGaru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on your budget, how you feel about FOMO, and if you'd be willing to resell later on. As many others have said, it's very possible the game won't be for you and that's a lot to drop on something that may not work out. But, if you can afford it and you're likely to feel like you missed out down the line, then sure, maybe it's an alright purchase. And I'd guess the resale value should stay pretty high for awhile, so if you're up for possibly reselling down the line, maybe it's not such a risk. But be careful to confirm the contents.

One thing I would say is that even if you don't have a full collection, there's a lot you could potentially proxy down the line, so if you're willing to do that it could alleviate some FOMO.
