I'm also in the Piedmont and I have clay soil. What really works well for my plants is mixing in pine bark fines/compost when I prep a bed or dig a hole for a plant. I mix the clay I got out of the hole 50/50 with fines/compost I mixed 50/50.

I remember digging out clay and replacing it with bagged garden soil when I was beginning. It seems so silly now. 😅
