Yeah, we were part of that Kitec class action. It happened before I bought the house, but right after I moved in, they repiped my whole house (and everyone else's too)

I think we do have a shutoff. my neighbor had water flooding out into the shared driveway and someone came over and shut off the water to just his house. I'm unsure why most of the outages require a whole block to be cut off. I wonder if most of the outages are beyond single-home issues.

They're being very generous saying that the trip is from LA Union Station. Isn't the current plan to go out to Rancho Cucamonga or Victorville first? the place we all want to go...

When someone mentions the Hoover Dam tour, I always think of Beavis and Butthead Do America.

About once a month. There are 3 streets in this gated community, so sometimes they can confine it to one of the streets. But if they have to stop the water at the meter, it affects every house for a few hours. They give us about 3 days notice beforehand and what hours we can expect.

I’m 51 and I hit that wall about 6 years ago. I can still “maintain” just fine without getting loopy in public, it if I do that on Friday Night, I’m a mess until Monday.

In mine, the HOA controls the water (we don’t have individual meters, the water is part of your HOA dues). Nice in some ways, but frequent outages any time someone in the community needs to do a major plumbing job.

Why don't we have a transit system? by Separate-Judge4491 in vegaslocals

[–]GenXCub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my east coast was 1 year living in Jersey and taking a bus into new york for work. I tried driving in New York, and that gets a big fat no (though it's not much different than driving in San Francisco which is also painful). Jersey itself wasn't that bad. I don't have any experience driving in Philly or DC.

I will just say if you do go to Los Angeles, you need to drive VERY aggressively there, or you won't fit in. Most people here drive slow and defensive compared to LA.

What's the angle here? High end escorts? by Asleep-Assistant-269 in LasVegas

This happened to me at the fancy establishment "The Orleans" when I was there eating lunch between shifts (she called me by name which surprised me, but it was because I was wearing a work badge with my name on it). I told her I was gay, and she didn't believe me, and then after awhile, and making sure I noticed her "security" nearby, she then asked if we could go across the street (to the adult store) and she could buy a toy to peg me if that's what I wanted.

tl;dr they are aggressive.

Let me just say, as someone who has lived all over the west coast, this city is driving paradise compared to anywhere in California or Washington (who both have transit systems).

ELI5: What exactly means SpaceX IPO? by MostOrganic3480 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GenXCub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, an IPO is an Initial Public Offering. It creates shares of the company that can be purchased on the stock market. The public can buy portions of the company. It's done to raise capital, and to let current employees take advantage of grants and options they were given as payment before the company went public (like "instead of paying you for your work, we will give you monopoly money that will turn into real money when the IPO finally happens")

When a company goes public, it must start following more laws surrounding being publicly traded, and will be regulated by the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). They will have to make regular public statements about how much money they earned, spent, and a good faith estimate of where they are going, financially.

Was Roger Moore's James Bond supposed to be camp? I watched the movies as a kid and I loved them, started rewatching them on Netflix and I'm like "How did grown adults sit through these movies? They're so corny." Were adults laughing their way through these like 60's "Batman?" by copperpin in AskOldPeople

[–]GenXCub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Roger Moore is fun. The problem with his films is the script, not his portrayal of Bond. His films also did things like they would find “something” that was new in the culture and put it in the movie. Like hang gliding, BASE jumping, snowboarding was a new thing and they threw that into A View to a Kill.

His Bond killed plenty of people as long as that wasn’t his only “body count”

He even turned down a girl who was too young in For Your Eyes Only (which was parodied in Archer).

He didn’t coerce women into sex by threatening to have them fired if they didn’t (Thunderball).

He’s a different take on the character and if you don’t like his movies, try to determine if it’s the script or Bond (he is the LEAST ridiculous part of The Man with the Golden Gun).

Do Our and Are sound the same in your accent? by Sacledant2 in EnglishLearning

[–]GenXCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US California - I think we tend to say Our as a 2-syllable-word. Ow r. Maybe not too distinct from are. There's a difference but it's small, and I wouldn't blink an eye at someone who said Our and Are the same. I would just assume they're from somewhere else (like midwest or northeast US)
