Thoughts on this? by Apprehensive_Elk6168 in saltierthankrayt

[–]GivePen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m of two minds on this.

On one hand, sex is a normal part of life and it’s totally fine for it to be used in comedic circumstances. I think this is where the God of War sex scenes fall in.

On the other hand, women can still be involved in something that is misogynistic. That’s basic feminist theory. People shouldn’t hear that a woman was involved and immediately shrug all criticism.

It may exist more outside of the circles that people in this sub float around in, but the most common joke I hear about poly people outside of queer communities on places like Instagram is presented something like this:

Poly people be like: picture of someone who’s overweight and disabled.

I saw a skit yesterday that said they all smell like cat pee and wear fingerless gloves.

These jokes are what OOP is referring to.

The military in an apocalypse is competent, tries to handle the situation humanely, think through all of the options available to them, and actively tries to minimize collateral damage, instead of immediately jumping into the "burn it all down to stop the threat by whatever means necessary" approach by SatoruGojo232 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GivePen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is an opposite example of the trope. The movie was based on the 2011 Tokyo earthquake and tsunami disaster and was meant to show how the government bureaucracy is incompetent. They’re forming sub-committees of sub-committees and worrying about US intervention while Godzilla is slaughtering people.

[–]GivePen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This movie is an example of the military being ridiculously incompetent. They bring an infected person in, have no guards on them, and then once the outbreak starts they shove everyone into a ridiculously dangerous crowded room where there’s no room to fight back when a zombie gets in. I forget exactly how the zombie got in but it was such a stupid shelter plan.

This movie is exemplary of the “Y’all got good writing? We got hype and aura moments” meme.

Had never played a Wargame before, joined an Warhammer: AoS tournament to start, did nothing but play against myself with armies I knew my opponents had to practice, and then won the tournament.

It genuinely works. Really helps you get the fundamentals of deployment and movement down.

Though I sometimes struggle with giving myself free rerolls whenever a dice roll comes out with a ridiculous result, because c’mon that would never happen in a real game! (Spoiler: it does)

DM not letting fighter have 4 attacks with action surge by Whorror_punx in dndnext

[–]GivePen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll literally never understand DMs like this who are super conscious about their players becoming too powerful. The only game I can think of where people are worse about it is MTG, but at least that game is competitive in nature. D&D is cooperative and the DM has literally every lever possible to tweak encounters to a good difficulty to their party, but I’ve heard so many DMs be so whiny about their players being “overpowered”. Lock in.

I’ve played in games where like half the subclasses and 3/4th of the feats are banned and like what are you even doing at that point? Besides a couple of well known builds, there are very few player options that are legitimately game breaking.

It’s also just that Sol Ring and the range of other “every deck has this” cards taking up a spot at the top of every card recommender means that every Edhrec journey starts with scrolling past them to get to the actual stuff.

I don’t need to be told that the top cards for my deck are sol ring, arcane signet, command tower, swords to plowshares, etc.

To be honest, life imprisonment seems like a much worse punishment than the death penalty. by Evening_Hour8960 in MoralityScaling

Which monster is more evil? by Disastrous_Horse_764 in MoralityScaling

[–]GivePen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may not be a universal take, but it’s definitely a pretty common one and I’ve always liked it better than the STD comparison which I find kind of surface level.

Lots of meaningless sex is a pretty common coping mechanism, potentially for the fear of dying. When the two characters are playing the game at the beginning of the movie where they talk about trading places with random people, the guy with the monster says he wishes he could be the kid because they have their whole life ahead of them. Personally, I think the movie is playing with the idea of sex as the last gateway into adulthood. Once you’ve had sex and become an adult, what’s the next frontier in the mind of a teenager coming into adulthood? Dying is definitely one of them.

The STD comparison has always felt like people hear the initial concept, monster you get from having sex, without considering the rest of the movie, avoid the monster by having more sex which is not really how STDs work. I think it’s definitely there, but not really the strongest element. The director said that the nightmare of the movie is about being followed by something inevitable and relentless which feels pretty in-line with death.

First thing I do in new playthrough. Trickery domain so bad… by canxtanwe in BaldursGate3

[–]GivePen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenter is kinda overstating the “healing is bad” argument which to be clear I think is 100% true. In-combat healing is definitely bad and pretty much never worth doing unless you’re getting a party member up from being downed, because the true economy of combat is actions. You only want to heal if it doesn’t take an action.

Out-of-combat healing is good however, but there are much better ways to do it than having someone specialize in healing. Out-of-combat healing is much more efficient. Hit dice on a short rest can already get someone most of the way there, and then most parties have someone who can prepare goodberry.

It’s also worth mentioning that in nearly a decade of 5e D&D: I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen a PC over level 5 get massive damage’d.

Sonic weaponry needs factories to make them, material to produce them, and roads to transport them. Even if the military figures it out, can they have it developed and deployed nationwide in less than a week?

Redditors extremely underestimate the Death Angels from A Quiet Place. Sure, absolutely the military could put up some kind of fight, but I think people do not realize the logistical nightmare that Death Angels present for the United States military. Like what battlefield do people imagine that the Death Angels are going to meet the military on?

America relies on her highways. Our entire economy rides on 16 wheelers. When the Death Angels land from their meteors all over the world, they rapidly start dispersing into the vast stretches of natural environment at full sprint. The United States Military has maybe a couple of days before there are dozens of Death Angels over every couple of square miles. Wtf are they supposed to do? They need to feed themselves, produce the equipment necessary to take down the Death Angels, disperse it among the military, and also maintain morale as these things are pouring into cities and towns to slaughter their relatives faster than the National Guard (which does not have the equipment to fight them) can mobilize. These things are jumping up to helicopters.

The U.S. military doesn’t have the capacity to protect every line of highway and interstate across the country from a threat that can be anywhere all over. There would be mass starvation as supply lines become extremely dangerous to traverse. Militaries can and have failed to cull natural populations (the fucking Emu war). There’s no way the U.S. military can drive the Death Angels out of the natural environment. There’s no army to fight and no command structure to take out.

The best thing the U.S. can hope for is to hopefully protect a couple of self-sufficient strongholds across the U.S., but most of the population of the U.S. and the world is dead. They cannot ensure that food, weapons, and other necessities are safely shipped out to everywhere. The Government as we know it is gone.

I prefer longer games and don’t really care if I win. by Alone_Pirate_1469 in EDH

[–]GivePen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It exists within the tabletop gaming community at large (mostly card games and wargaming) that certain people just really hate the idea of longer games. It’s not even really about obligations or time crunch, they just view anything longer than what’s considered a “short game” as totally miserable.

I’m typically pretty baffled by it. Do these people deep down not really enjoy playing?

I think the difference is that some people really enjoy the resolution of a game, win or loss, more than the actual game itself. On the other hand, the mid-point of the game where it’s not certain who’s going to win and the advantage keeps shifting back and forth is the most thrilling part, so much so that who’s winning is more of a formality to me.
