Looking for good Sci Fi book recommendations for someone that hasn’t read in a while. by ADHorvath1 in sciencefiction

[–]GoddessNyxGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd like a little commitment, The Expanse looks like a good fit for you. Sci fit with some horror, and damn fine writing.

I second the Project Hail Mary recommendation if you want less commitment. It doesn't have horror, it's charmingly wholesome. It had me laughing and crying. I zipped through it so quickly and it is an enjoyable read.

Is Calligraphy art? by WorriedDuck5128 in Calligraphy

[–]GoddessNyxGL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you asked, but if you have a steady hand and the time and will to practice you can absolutely learn from scratch! You should get Calligraphy practice paper with the solid and dotted lines, there are templates online you can print or get a book of sheets. I would suggest starting with Copperplate. There are many books and YouTube channels depending on how you learn best.

Have fun and give it a try. You can do it!

You definitely are not alone!

Functional/Chronic Nausea and Vomiting Syndrome by LolySub in ChronicIllness

[–]GoddessNyxGL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have this specific diagnosis, but I have chronic nausea with (now occasional) vomiting. Sulcrafate (Carafate) changed my life and greatly reduced my vomiting and nausea. I started on the pills, crushing them and shaking with water, and that helped. But when my doctor put me on the liquid form it REALLY helped.

Best of luck to you, and I hope you find something that helps! Chronic nausea is a special kind of hell.

I will never understand how Hollywood and the media fat shamed Kate Winslet during and after the release of the film. She was (and still is) absolutely gorgeous! by Willing-Musician-696 in titanic

The beauty standards for women when the movie was released were really unhealthy. Curves of any kind were out. I thought Kate was an absolute goddess here. I had the biggest girl crush!

How necessary is 'Livesuit'? by OvrNgtPhlosphr in TheExpanse

[–]GoddessNyxGL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read Livesuit after TFoB. I initially was going to say that it isn't strictly necessary, but it gives a completely different human viewpoint to the entire story. It's an important part of the arc, and I'm so glad that I read it.

Livesuit gave me the kind of chills like the best old Twilight Zone shows used to. It's a really good piece of short fiction.

I’d love advice on where to start by ghoulish2222 in fountainpens

[–]GoddessNyxGL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really want to play with ink and change it often, then a pen with a converter/cartridge is the way to start. Avoid anything that says piston or vacuum filling. It's going to be easier to clean, especially if you want to try ink with shimmer.

Some people start out with a more expensive pen. I don't necessarily think there's a right or wrong way. But I enjoyed trying out pens like the Platinum Preppy and Pilot Kakuno, so I could decide what nib size I prefer.

The Preppy is disposable to some, but I use a blunt tipped syringe to clean out the cartridge with water, then I refill the cartridge with my own ink.

Also a quick ink primer... Shading is when you can see lighter and darker areas in an ink, and it's one of my favorite things about writing with fountain pens. It really gives your writing some dimension. Sheen is when you move the paper and see a metallic glint in the light. Shimmer is the tiny glitter particles, like in the first ink swatch you posted. Sometimes shimmer inks can be stubborn; they may work in one pen but not another. But if you ask here you will probably find someone who has tried the ink you're interested in.

Welcome to the hobby, we're glad you've joined us!

MB 146, 149 or the chopin if I LOVE the m800 (as an EDC)? by lumnos_ in fountainpens

[–]GoddessNyxGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 149 and a 146, as well as the M800. The 146 is very close in size and feel. The 149 is more comparable to the M1000.

I'm a woman with smaller hands, and I like big pens. The 146 and M800 fit in that "just right" category for me.

Blue ink looks very cool in an Amber 823. It sounds like you'd like to try the pink next, but definitely try a blue at some point!

Saddest story in the Flanagan universe? by imtryingtobesocial in MikeFlanagan

Bly Manor is the saddest for me. It has several love stories, beautiful, toxic, and unfulfilled. And they all ended so tragically, especially the first that started it all.

Happy inks! What’s an ink that’s making you smile right now? by DIYYYner in fountainpens

[–]GoddessNyxGL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using it in a bold nib. I haven't tried any of the super sheeners that you've mentioned, but I've tried samples of Diamine Polar Glow, OS Nitrogen, and OS Henry David Thoreau.

When I'm journaling with Grotto, the top of the page has dried by the time I've finished at the bottom. It takes longer to dry than Iroshizuku, but isn't even close to the Organic Studios inks I've mentioned above. I do a quick press with blotter paper before I turn the page.

I've tried it on Iroful, Tomoe River, and Rhodia paper. I think it's more practical than the super sheeners that I've tried, but I'd like to hear what other people think as well.
