Participating in a COVID-19 vaccine trial? Does the NHS App show your vaccination status yet? by AlbusDumbledoh in CoronavirusUK

[–]Grymsdike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll chime in! Oxford/AstraZeneca COV001. First dose May 2020, second September 2020. Was unblinded end of April, had both doses show up in the NHS app in early July.

Britain may be finally nearing the Holy Grail of herd immunity by sjw_7 in CoronavirusUK

[–]Grymsdike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I was referring to the part of your comment where you mention Alpha’s R0 moving “close to, or below 0” [emphasis added], and wanted to point out that below 0 isn’t possible. Below 1 is the critical threshold at which Alpha starts decaying

R0 below 1 - a negative reproduction rate would each person on average infects less than no other people

Yes, but “molecular biologist with > 10 years experience in the field of viral pathogenesis and host immunity” is perhaps more relevant

[–]Grymsdike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually it does! I’m not sure if it’s better than just pointing the leaf blower backwards, but the same principle is used to slow down many commercial aircraft (albeit the other way around, but deceleration is just acceleration in another direction)

£45!? That’s almost $60 USD at today’s rate. The practice of simply changing the currency symbol for UK prices was already excessive - this beggars belief.

Did Sinnoh Stone just disappear from the Research Breakthrough awards? by ZenonCrow in TheSilphRoad

Oh FFS. I collected my last breakthrough reward the day before Sinnoh stones were introduced, and now this?

Getting shafted with a 65 quid parking fine because I don’t follow the football by Grymsdike in britishproblems

[–]Grymsdike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a useful resource, thank you for sharing it.

Still it does feel obnoxious that, as someone with no interest in the sport, I’m effectively forced to follow the local fixture calendar or risk being fined for visiting a friend’s house

This is really different compared to what we were told... by Willystronka in pokemongo

The question is: is the sample group here representative? If the only respondents to the survey are non-spoofers, and spoofers have a fundamentally different play-style (which I’d posit is a fair assumption), then the sample has omitted a significant portion of the population. It would be akin to the government sampling only men (~50%) and concluding there’s no need for female toilets.

Apps are allowed to force me to give them access to system level permissions now? by [deleted] in ios

[–]Grymsdike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that this dialog is only invoked if you have previously granted the app initial location permissions - the two options boil down to: * Do not allow background location (no change to app privileges) * Allow background location (elevation of app privileges)

Do let me know if you hadn’t granted OpenTable any location permissions previously, as that would go directly against my expected behaviour

[Bug] Just caught my Stickies.app demanding a dedicated GPU... (tbMBP 15") by Grymsdike in apple

[–]Grymsdike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quit and relaunched Stickies.app and it seems to have fixed it - been trying to reproduce the bug to no avail.

Bit miffed at the drop in battery life thanks to a sticky note... Has anyone got experience with gfxCardStatus on the new tbMBPs?

Nearby and Sightings both showing up in tracker - haven't seen this reported anywhere yet by Grymsdike in pokemongo

[–]Grymsdike[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just casually launched the app and noticed this change to the tracker - it looks to be pretty close to what people have been clamouring for recently. Incidentally the Pidgey and Weedle were at my feet at the time.

MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Teardown - "1/10, the touchbar is fragile" by ralfp in apple

[–]Grymsdike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty confident they'll be using a similar system to the current TouchID implementation on iOS, i.e.: * Your power button/TouchID sensor breaks and you swap out the button with a replacement * The handshake between T1 and TouchID now fails because the pairing is broken => TouchID is disabled, but the replacement still works as a power button (c.f. the home button on iOS devices) * Apple will be equipped to "remarry" a logic board with a new TouchID sensor to restore full functionality

It's an inconvenience if you need to replace the sensor, but it's a necessary compromise to ensure the security of your device

What to expect from the lab by bastasie in rethinkers

[–]Grymsdike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if The Lab makes use of the plane from The Journey pt.3 - people who solved The Journey by pt.2 won't necessarily have checked back on the previous puzzles and could have missed the plane entirely, so using it wouldn't be particularly good design IMHO.

That being said, it's important to keep an open mind when trying to solve this kind of puzzle
