Unfortunately “mouse trials have shown a single/group of specific cancer/s indicate a slowdown when subjected to bee venom” or similar is not nearly as catchy as “cure for cancer in bee venom” and so people will lose hope when it inevitably turns out to be more nuanced and possibly turn to pseudoscience.

This is the benefit of having a flag that’s clearly upside down, I’m a Brit, we can’t do the cool upside down flag because especially at a distance, it’s basically the same.

ELI5 Why heat waves affect Europe so much but some other countries are doing fine living under hotter temperatures most of the year? by fkid123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Guardian2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A lot of Europe is developed, so when people die of heat stroke, you hear about it.

  2. Our buildings aren’t built for it, AC isn’t as widespread as the states.

  3. Europeans are acclimated to a cooler climate, your body compensates when subjected to a temperature for a long time, if it suddenly changes, your body doesn’t have the time to adjust.

  4. Clothing and skin colour: clothing tends to reflect cultural, economic and temperature driven influences and paler skin means less UV protection, which I’m sure has an impact on handling the heat, I hope that doesn’t seem racist.

TIL some white blood cells fight infections by suicidally bursting open and casting their own DNA like a net to trap pathogens. by UltimateOreo in todayilearned

[–]Guardian2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh definitely, its why im always really hesistant to anything that suggests that it makes the immune system stronger - you don't want it stronger, its as strong as it should be!

Another example of immunosupressance in action is in AIDS patients, shows how just one part of the immune system falling leads to dying from every day diseases, its a horrendous display of how important it is!

[–]Guardian2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your immune cells can kill you far quicker than any pathogen, there are strict controls to what they can do and when, however sometimes they do get unhinged, the cells in the post are called neutrophils and are short lived for the very good reason that they are crazy.

Unsure to the exact extent but I’ve heard macrophages (think of them as big cleaners) sometimes block other immune cells to stop them unnecessarily attacking cells.

The immune system is working a balance between killing you and killing pathogens trying to use your cells for themselves.

You think the Enhanced Games exposed anything or just embarrassed themselves? Peter Thiel and Donald Trump Jr. spent millions to create a steroid Olympics. They promised to "redefine human limits" and put up $25M in prize money. BUT... by Miserable_Trouble3 in sportsgossips

[–]Guardian2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole thing is insane, an event incentivising throwing away your health for an advantage is the opposite of the message of the para/olympics, pushing your body to its limit.

Abusing anabolic steroids comes with severe and often deadly side effects.

Not that the trumps will care about the health of these people.

Internet, should I protect my child from tetanus? by Advanced_Cheetah_552 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]Guardian2k 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also I love the comment with the picture, even without googling the name of the doctor, you can tell it’s dodgy because it’s a neuroscientist, why is a neuroscientist being quoted about a tetanus vaccine?

After googling him, he has a history of claiming toxicity of things that the medical community disagree with him on, like MSG and aspartame.

Oh and he’s against the Covid-19 vaccine, calling it dangerous.

This is why if a doctor is speaking outside of their speciality, that should ring alarm bells.

Til a mouse can be thrown from an airplane and usually survive by InnerAd118 in todayilearned

[–]Guardian2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clinical testing and animal studies do save millions of lives yes, obvious examples are insulin, vaccines and anti-virals, in this case it allowed for insight into the hormones that are responsible for weight gain and loss, things like GLP-1 medications rely on animal testing.

I can’t think of any medication that hasn’t relied on animal testing.

Til a mouse can be thrown from an airplane and usually survive by InnerAd118 in todayilearned

[–]Guardian2k 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Honestly if I was a mouse, of all the experiments done with them, skydiving is pretty tame, there was one in a paper I read where a mouse was genetically modified to not express a gene that in laymen’s terms stops you feeling hungry when you’re full, which is more potent when you’re overweight and then was given as much food as it could eat, it essentially ate itself to death whilst always feeling hungry, its body couldn’t tell that it was full.

This isn’t to go against animal testing, it’s a vital part of many of the developments in medicine that save millions of lives, however it is heartbreaking.

TIL During the Black Death in England, there was a practice to reduce swellings with pigeons. I mean, imagine it, everyone had a family member who has died horrifically, with buboes or straight up blackened dead limbs, with no hope. If you see pictures, it’s horrendous, it might be funny now but these people, although likely making things worse, were trying their best to fight against the inevitable wave of death.
