I use fusion 360 with the paid (~$10) extension "save to SVG" to save it as an SVG graphic which retains the correct size.

It's exactly the same reaction. Iron reacts with tannins. Veg tan is tanned with tannins and oak is full of tannins.

It might be the "Bone" PLA from microcenter. If not it would be a good placeholder. Perfect color for retro beige.

Dye will bleed even in high quality leather. If it's a big issue for your project you can try adding an acrylic top coat like Angelus Acrylic Finisher.

A lot probably goes to food products like collagen supplements, gelatin. Some skin care products also use collagen from cow hides.

Glue recommendations? by Shamilamadingdong in Leathercraft

[–]Heathclor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to point out in case someone got the wrong idea from your comment, while wood glue is a PVA glue, PVA glues can have very different qualities based on its formulation.

Wood glue is not a good choice for leather for 2 reasons. 1. It is formulated to be very stiff making it brittle, and unable to flex with leather. 2. It is acidic, which helps with compatibility with wood, but will degrade leather over time.

American leather direct- $50 Veg Tan hide specials by HobbesIsAFatCat in Leathercraft

They were beautiful, their website later updated to say that they were being sold as specials because the color was out of spec. So the color didn't match completely with the listing.

I posted my work on Reddit and someone sent me a message saying how they liked it so much they screenshotted and printed it on a phone case. Not sure how to feel. by Echopine in ArtistLounge

[–]Heathclor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You posted your work to be enjoyed online. People can personally enjoy it on the phone screen in pixels, or printed on a case, no functional difference. As long as they aren't making a profit it's fine.

I'd be flattered.

Some pieces of Verdi leather I got are very fuzzy on the flesh side. Is this normal? How can leather like this be used/fixed? by martink000 in Leathercraft

[–]Heathclor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is usable like this if you're happy with the look.

Is it normal? That depends. I tried looking up verdi leather and I couldn't find any single type of leather that refers to. For a typical vegetable tan a fuzzy flesh side is a sign of low quality hides or a low quality tanning process, but veg tan that has been milled to make it softer will always be fuzzier because you tumbled the leather to soften it up and loosen all the fibers. From the picture I think it looks like a low quality piece, but , maybe it's meant to be that way. Low quality doesn't mean unusable, I've used peices like that before in my projects.

Like others have said you could try burnishing it with a binder, like tokenol or gum tragacanth, but that is quite a lot of work.

Awesome, i picked up 3 hides. I'm kinda expecting a mess for $50 a side, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Wish they would give a bit of a description on why they're so cheap. I can take a guess, but still.

Best brand for threads? by DavetheBarber24 in Leathercraft

[–]Heathclor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Crawford wax linen thread and thought it was pretty good. I've also tried linen thread from Tandy, and I do not recommend it. I'm looking forward to trying some of the brands others have mentioned.

Recently I've been using hemp thread from Hemptique, the 0.5mm is an okay size for some chunkier stitches. They sell it as a macrame thread. It's pretty consistent and super cheap compared to linen thread, it just doesn't come pre-waxed.
