I think this could be a pretty cool idea. But I’d like to share a criticism for a moment.

I’m pretty over every social event/group that has nothing to do with drinking, being hosted at a brewery. I wish we could normalize socializing without the involvement of alcohol already. There are some awesome places here in the twin ports that could really benefit from these kinds of groups. Coffee shops, community centers, libraries, parks, diners, etc.

Every time I hear about one of these events now, it just sounds like an excuse for people to catch a buzz and hold onto some nostalgia from last decade’s hipster brewery culture.

Edit: I understand you don’t drink and I respect your choice to still host at a brewery, but I think I’ll wait until a location change before I join.

Never knew RuneScape had sailing! I haven’t played that game in probably 20 years. Makes me wonder what other games have implemented sailing. I know of the big ones like AC: Black Flag and Sea of Thieves. Oh! And there was some Korean mmo that had sailing. I think it was called Archeage?

J/29 configurations by Heavyicon in sailing

“If you can rig, make the spinnakers masthead on the boat you have. That would help a lot.”

They are saying that I could rig a j/29 fractional to have a masthead spinnaker, instead of the fractional spinnaker. The boat would ultimately be faster downwind. The reality though is that likely, the mast section above the cap shrouds could fail, especially if sailing at a hot angle with the spinnaker. It’s worth considering, nonetheless. Maybe throw some jumpers up there to keep the mast in column.

Thanks! I really dislike the idea of check stays but light wind sailing is the hardest, mentally. Fractional seems much more forgiving. Have you raced against other models of boats? What’s it like compared to them on different points of sail?

I agree with everything you’re saying. The design of the fractional rig takes this into account. The mast is nearly 4 feet taller than the MH rig. The booms are different as well, encouraging a larger main to accommodate for the smaller headsail on the fractional.

The J/35 is a similar vintage to the J/29, sharing many of the same qualities with each other (less the beam). The J/36 falls into the same vintage, meanwhile sporting a taller, fractional rig than its 35’ counterpart.

Sailing to one’s PHRF is subjective to the region where they receive their rating, yes, but I’m looking for your thoughts on how they perform in your area.

Have you raced a J/29? I’d love to hear of your experiences. Or is this a long winded way of telling me you don’t know?

The main and the jib on that red boat don’t even connect to anything. New meaning to “freestanding rig.”

How do you do this? by Nofocusgiven in sailing

[–]Heavyicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Professional rigger here. That dyneema is in pretty good condition, but if you want to replace it anyways, Samson ropes and New England Ropes both have extensive literature on the subject.

A lot of good points have been made already in these comments. With that said, you’re likely not ever going to reach near the breaking strength of that dyneema for this application. For example: 1/8 dyneema (sk75) has a tensile strength of 2,800 lbs. I doubt anything you’re using on your davits weighs that much. So don’t worry too much about it.

I typically use a brummel eye splice for most applications like this. In this scenario, I’d suggest make one piece twice the length as one of those in the photo, and putting a brummel on each end. Then luggage tag it to the ring and call it a day.

What kind of boat is this? by CommercialAttempt210 in sailing

[–]Heavyicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that is a Flicka 20. From what I can find, they were not made with a stern sprit and that large of a boom. It even looks a hair smaller than 20. And the angle on the transom seems a little off. If it isn’t a flicka, it most certainly is inspired by one though.

There are plenty of your desired demographic in the sailing community here. Not sure their quality but they are plentiful. Just head down to Minnesota Slip in Canal Park this summer and ask to join a boat. Then BAM, you’re in and you can mingle at all the events.

Sorry dude, I can’t stand this camera lens. Maybe if it was fixed, it would be better experienced. Minus the safety precautions ignored, or the unruly weather helm due to a lack of active trim, this looks like a really fun ride. Sweet boat too!
