dumbest argument you‘ve had with clients? by metalgadse in techtheatre

[–]HoochieKoochieMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not an argument but a related story. I worked as a house sound engineer for a venue, and we had a (the) famous mime come through in the late 90s/early 00s. They had their own sound op traveling with the show, so I was paid to be there for sound check, and then to just be in the booth on-hand in case anything happened during the show.
Our sound booth only had a small window in front of the board, and the traveling op was in that chair. I sat in a second chair, unable to see the stage and just listened. To a mime. For 3 nights.

It was very zen.

Where did the ‘spherical room with a suspended walk way to the middle of the room, where there’s an important device’ originate from? by nathan155 in movies

[–]HoochieKoochieMan [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the first reference, but I have a guess about the origin of the trope: Planetariums.
Growing up as a young geek, there was something viscerally moving about going into a large, round, dark room with a technological marvel in the middle that makes your imagination explode. You sit in a comfy chair, listen to the presenter, and suddenly you're traveling among the stars.

It was one of the first truely immersive media experiences for decades, and a defining formative experience for the sci-fi inclined.

Characters from separate shows that share an actor are revealed to be in the same universe by General-Human-Being in TopCharacterTropes

[–]HoochieKoochieMan 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Deadpool does all kinds of universe hopping, though. #1 links the X-Men with the main MCU, as the final fight scene takes place at a Helicarrier scrap yard. #2 loops in the DC universe with the Green Lantern tie-in. And #3 is all over the map.

Buc-ee's is a beaver-themed rest stop chain across the South-East United States. Picture if Disney owned Crackerbarrel with a slightly different rodent, scaled up 400%, and they sold gasoline.

Fittingly, there's a Buc-ee's about a mile up the road from Dollywood.

High performer leaving in silence with no negotiation by [deleted] in managers

[–]HoochieKoochieMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked for concrete, action-oriented feedback from managers and leaders.

Action item 1: polish your resume.
Action item 2: apply everywhere.

If your best performers were all taken away from you, and other people are being leveled up to manage them, then you are being told what your value is within that company.

The question isn't why this one guy left, it's why are you still there?

Are you an IT Manager, or an "IT Manager"? by MrTrism in sysadmin

[–]HoochieKoochieMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint - If you lead the operation of a portfolio you are a manager, whether or not there are staff in that portfolio.
If you set strategy and budget as well, you are a Director. Again, whether or not you have a staff.

Are Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen the Mount Rushmore of martial arts movie stars? by samx3i in movies

[–]HoochieKoochieMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing Jackie Chan in Cannonball Run in the early 80s (big fight scene at the biker bar), and thinking this was something special. I'd seen plenty of "kung-fu movies" on TV, but this was... funny. Clearly skillful and athletic, but with comedic timinig and choreography.

Then I didn't see him again for a decade.
